  • Hasok Chang, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge University, wrote a wonderful book Is Water H2O? In it he traces the historical and philosophical twists and turns to get from water to H2O. Along the way, he reckons with and treats seriously competing theories other than what emerged as the winner.

In the end, he doesn't disagree with the role of H2O in water. Rather, he shows how the process of scientific theory making is benefited from a pluralistic view through s repetitive process of challenge and theory adjustment.

I mainly made the comment because we shouldn't always assume what we were shown in high school captures the deeper process of insight creation.

He deals with the weekly emergent qualities like surface tension. We might be able to say that surface tension is one property of wetness even.

But I also think that water is one of the few phenomena that seems to actually have a strongly emergent qualities. Which is to say, there's qualities that are in water that are not explainable by the properties of its component parts.

Ultimately, one of Chang's goals it to contextualize and not reduce these scientific concepts for greater insights.

To be more accurate, I don't think it's wrong to say that water is more than just H2O. To get gestalt, we should say water is something other than the sum of its parts, H2O.

  • A little box you can put your app.

If the app does bad, it doesn't sink your ship. Just throw the box over board and repackage the app.

I'm not sure most people need it, but it could be fun to use a new app inside a container. Also makes updating that needs a restarting without shutting down your other services.

The Singular of Data is Data

The singular of data in Latin is datum, but in English it's data. It is a mass noun where it's not easy to break it into individual, countable pieces. Something like sand is almost never represented in ite plural form of sands.

Help Setting up a Windows 11 Machine for a Kid

I'm currently setting up a windows 11 machine for a kid and want to make sure that their traffic is easily monitored. I've debloated much of it. Normally, I'd get rid of Edge and put on Firefox. But I noticed that Microsoft Family has the ability to monitor website usage.

I was wondering if there's similar functionality with Firefox or Chrome.

I'm most familiar with the iOS parental toolkit.

Finally, I want to let him have some access to some games, but I don't want him to purchase any games yet. I'm open to suggestions to getting this aspect locked in as well. I was just going to mimic my set up with Playnite. But I haven't really dug into it yet.

Who are the swing voters in America? | The Economist

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/14210696

The two percentage points of vote share that Mr Trump has gained since 2020 come from three sources. The largest group is people who supported Mr Biden last time, but are now undecided, backing minor candidates or not planning to vote, who outnumber those making the same shift from Mr Trump’s camp. These voters account for 0.9 points of Mr Trump’s two-point improvement. Undecided former Biden voters are slightly younger, more likely to be black or female and less likely to have attended college than repeat Biden voters.

Mr Trump also enjoys an edge among people entering or returning to the major-party electorate. The share who say they did not vote for either him or Mr Biden in 2020 but have now settled on Mr Trump is 3.7%, slightly above the 3.3% who are choosing Mr Biden. This group adds another 0.3 of a point to Mr Trump’s tally.

The final group, swing voters, is the smallest but also the most impactful. Bec

    Scrolling Another Instance's Local

Not sure this can be done, but I'd love to scroll another instance like I do for my local instance. I use that to discover new communities and get an initial sense of their post quality.

I imagine I could create another login for that instance, but would love to do it with one login.

Barring that, I'd love to filter communities by federated instances.
