  • Rumsfeld's statement brought attention to the concepts of known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns, but these were in common use in US defense procurement by the late 1960s. In a 1968 study sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association, Hudson Drake from North American Rockwell argued that defence contractors had to solve both known unknowns and "unanticipated unknowns".[5] Also in 1968, Lt. Gen. William B. Bunker noted that when developing complex weapons systems "there are two kinds of technical problems: there are the known unknowns, and the unknown unknowns."[6] The usage was common enough for an industry shorthand to have developed where unknown-unknowns were referred to as "unk-unks".[7]

The term was commonly used inside NASA.[8] Rumsfeld cited NASA administrator William Graham in his memoir; he wrote that he had first heard "a variant of the phrase" from Graham when they served together on the Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States during the late 1990s.[9]

  • it'd be funny if the hiccups were just transferred from fist-ee to fist-er.

  • It'll cure your hiccups... BUT AT WHAT COST?!?!

  • The funny thing is, when I saw the wrong title ("Hey Poor") I immediately knew what song it was and it started playing in my head.

  • I never notice who's driving a "cybertruck" bc I'm too busy cringing.

  • Aw yeah I've got a couple songs of theirs in the mix I use when driving around:

    • Bet you do
    • Dancing on your grave
    • Double Vision
    • Insignificant
    • Jealousy is Lethal
    • Play Noble
    • Demon Chaser

Listening to mixes and twitch streams has spoiled me, I can't really listen to full albums any more but I'm always hyped when Pixel Grip comes on.

Looks like they're hitting the US starting next month; the west coast, southwest, and south. https://pixelgripmusic.com/tourdates

  • Yeah, apparently something along those lines has been shown to work:

Drinking through a straw with the ears plugged is a folk remedy that can be successful.[34] In 2021, a scientific tool with a similar basis was tested on 249 hiccups subjects; the results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).[35][34] This device is named FISST (Forced Inspiratory Suction and Swallow Tool) and branded as "HiccAway". This study supports the use of FISST as an option to stop transient hiccups, with more than 90% of participants reporting better results than home remedies. A non-commercial resource describing a similar suction-based technique using a regular straw and water bottle has also been published online.[36] HiccAway stops hiccups by forceful suction that is being generated by diaphragm contraction (phrenic nerve activity), followed by swallowing the water, which requires epiglottis closure.[37]

Another approach that worked for me once:

A breathing exercise called supra-supramaximal inspiration (SSMI) has been shown to stop persistent hiccups. It combines the three principles of hypercapnia, diaphragm immobilization, and positive airway pressure. First, the subject must exhale completely, then take a deep breath. Then, they must hold their breath for ten seconds. After ten seconds, they must take another small breath without exhaling, then hold their breath for five seconds. Again, without exhaling, they must take another small breath and hold their breath for five seconds. Upon exhaling, the hiccups should be gone.[33]

  • I think the TESCREAL people are pro-AI, but tbh I'm not 100% sure.

  • Aw yeah I used Emacs way back like 20+ years ago, I'll take a look at that framework (and Kate), thanks.

  • Thanks, I'll check it out.

  • Very interesting, Ima check out Preact, thanks.

  • That sounds great, Ima try it out.

  • That sounds perfect, thanks.

  • I watched this movie when I was a lil' kid. I didn't really "get it" bc it was cartoons, right? So I figured it was kid stuff. But it's not. It's kind of a slightly sleazy Italian take on Fantasia. Like take a look at it's animation of Ravel's "Bolero": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcmgI_kgPhM Now that I'm older I'm like that's pretty freakin awesome, but at the time I was like wtf?!? There's another song that has an aging satyr and as a kid I was like: I THINK something's going on there that I might undersand someday....

Anyway apparently there's a 50th anniversary showing in NYC next month, and if you're anywhere near there I recommend you get to that theater and check it out. Apparently they're showing it with "Fantasia" so it is literally a b-movie. But it's really more of a cult movie. According to Wikipedia the Disney animators of the time respected it. Hopefully there'll be a wider release, at least in art house film theaters, it must be amazing to watch on the big screen.

it's take on Bolero ... it's true... civilization really is like that....
