  • Spain under Sanchez's government has been 'courting' China for some years now, and the prime minister is intensifying it of late. Unfortunately, this has less to do with a strategy aimed at benefiting the Spanish economy and its people imo but rather with Sanchez's fight for political survival. Sanchez is facing corruption scandals involving his brother, his wife, and close political allies of this socialist party. The recent resignation of a police chief over accusations of rape is adding to Sanchez problems. He needs some distractions it seems.

  • This statement makes no sense. China's mercantilism - pushing for trade surpluses in practically all industries - wouldn't even work if pursued by all countries (a trade surplus for everyone is logically impossible, and the attempt doesn't end well as we have seen in Europe 300 or so years ago).

    Beijing is subsidizing some sort of a zombie economy as many companies would long be shut down without massive state subsidies that go well beyond what can be considered reasonable. In the EV industry, for example, only 15 of 129 Chinese EV brands are expected to be profitable by 2030, according to a report from last year.

    The US and China are artificially creating economic imbalances, it's just that one is doing it mainly by tariffs and the other by deliberately producing oversupply.

  • It's certainly hard to make an inference from a single incident. What we can say is that anything critical of China is rigorously censored in mainland China, while non-Chinese incidents are conveyed with a critical spin. The goal is to portray China - or, rather, its government - as superior.

    This is certainly also the case in many US and Western media such as FoxNews in the US as you say. I fully agree that many here in the West have an agenda. Unlike China, however, we in the West have a broad spectrum of media outlets with many of them being independent. For example, we can find many articles critical of Donald Trump in various US media despite his administration's current move toward autocracy, but you can't find even a single piece in Chinese media that is critical of Xi Jinping.

    I agree that here on Lemmy we see a lot of this bit of human psychology, though. Tankies like OP do it all the time. Their alt accounts' post histories have a special spin in that they (rightfully) condemn Israel's atrocities against Palestinians, for example, while in their .ml communities they are literally cheering Russia's atrocities against Ukrainian civilians.

    As one study says:

  • The real issue here is imo that the Chinese party-state amplifies the failure of a Western car, while it censors everything that is only slightly critical of Chinese companies or the Chinese government in general. Fuck Tesla, but all other non-Chinese cars (and products in other industries) receive the same treatment in China.

  • China's atrocoties against Uyghurs, Tibetans, and other minorities within the country, its increasingly aggressive behaviour against its Asian neighbours on land and at sea, transnational repression and political interferences in Canada (Canada is among the most targeted countries worldwide by China in that respect), death threats by Chinese officials against officials of other governments (Japan) and even entire populations (Japan, Australia), .... the list is too long for a comment here ...

    I would agree Canada to send oil to Cuba, but Canada doesn't need China for this. And China's own support for Cuba doesn't reflect 'humanitarian effort' but rather an attempt to gain influence in the region. Very much as the US administration, China has no interest in humanitarian assistance, they seek leverage over others to exploit them for their own goals.
