  • It depends on what the roads were built for.

If they are built to handle 1500kg passenger cars, 3500kg behemoth SUVs and Pickups can really do some damage, especially at speed.

  • Passenger cars are getting heavier Light trucks (SUVs) are now being driven in lieu of compact station-wagons.

Vehicle classes are also getting larger and heavier. Subcompacts that used to weigh less than 1000kg are now about 1500kg and EV variants are over 2000kg!

  • So is over-inflation. Always inflate to the correct pressure as per the placard. If you are driving in unusual conditions,

My little Jimny weighs bugger-all but needs Light Truck tyres. On-road pressure is a very light 26 PSI. If I am driving through Sand, Mud or Snow I will deflate to an appropriate pressure and drive slowly. If I am driving over rocky terrain, I will also deflate to an appropriate pressure for better adhesion.

As soon as I hit the Tarmac again, I will reinflate back to 26. If I am carrying more weight or towing, I will inflate the rear tyres to 29.

  • The three biggest things that kill a tyre are;

    • shitty roads
    • aggressive driving
    • heavy vehicles (like EVs and oversized SUVs)

That said, cheaper tyres are typically made of cheaper compounds that age poorly.

  • Which isn’t even a slap on the wrist. For modern commercial journalism, being called out on MediaWatch is a promotional opportunity! “Look how much we can corrupt reality, advertise with us”.

  • Commercial “Journalist” needs to be held to a higher standard.

They should voluntarily do a retraction article of the same duration in the same time slot explaining exactly how they screwed up and how they will restore their integrity in the future.

If they don’t, the industry regulator needs to call them out on it.

  • The boxy style actually leads to more pedestrian injuries due to reduced visibility and sharp angles.

The best design is a gentle slope. That is why most modern cars have a gentle grille angle, sensors in the front bar and pyrotechnic actuators in the bonnet hinges.

They loosen and push the back of the of the bonnet up so that when the victims head hits the bonnet, there is some give and they are less likely to receive debilitating head injuries.

Still, there is no substitute for driving more slowly and paying attention to your surroundings.

My number two rule of the road is to assume that every person on the road as complete idiot and is going to make mistakes, including yourself.

  • I had a black mica Barina that never showed dirt. The mica in the paint had just the right amount of reflectivity that any additional dirt or dust just looked like more mica.

  • To quote Tim Minchin “your dog has a bigger carbon footprint than your Four Wheel drive, So does your baby, maybe you should trade them in on a Prius”

  • There was a political parody comedy radio series in the 80s called “How Green was my Cactus”.

I remember a negotiation between “King Bonza” (Bob Hawke) and a simulacrum of Reagan discussing letting Australia win the Americas Cup yacht race.

KB “Let us win or we’ll force you to tell us what’s at Pine Gap”. R “you will need to force us to tell you where it is first” KB “Then we will send Don Lane home” R “no! Anything but that! OK, you win”

  • Fun fact; osteo-archeologist and palaeontologist students used to be given thylacine skulls to identify as a hazing ritual. They would usually be misidentified as Canine (fox or domestic dog).

They do have different teeth to Foxes and they are smaller than Wolves but the similarity with Domestic Dogs and Dingos are uncanny!

    Convergent evolution at its finest!

  • They will take a plate from a similar car to the stolen vehicle. They will then drive around, pretending to be you,

In some cases, they won’t even bother stealing a plate and they will just buy a “novelty” plate from an online retailer, driving around in a car they didn’t pay for and racking up tolls and fines under your name!

  • Taco Bill however is a staple of day drinking mummies and 17 1/2 year olds who want to polish off a whole fishbowl margarita while eating inauthentic TexMex that (while not as good as GyG or any of the independent Mexican restaurants) is much better that Taco Bell.

  • I have a Tent with built in LED lighting and the switch is illuminated, so you can find it at 3:00AM when you go for a wee. It uses 5V over a USB-A plug. Quite nifty!

The problem is that it does not adhere to the USB spec so after a minute, the power bank decides that nothing is connected and stops supplying power (as a safety feature). You then have to wake up the power bank back up to can find the light switch, which you can’t do without lights on.

  • I do have to admit that their normal cars (that are built in China) are actually very well built.

    The problems with the Cybertruck are;

    • a complete fuck-knuckle had complete creative control and did not leave it to his engineers.
    • like all^^ US manufactured vehicles, it is a piece of Shit.

    ^^ (the greater majority of)

  • Most modern monocoque vehicles are held together with 2-part adhesive which (when correctly applied) is stronger than welds.

The reason is that most vehicles are composite of different metals and alloys, fire to different components requiring different properties, and if they are directly connected, the different metals would result in galvanic corrosion.

The problem is when the surfaces aren’t suitably prepared prior to the adhesive being applied, or the adhesive is not correctly applied which may happen during manufacturing because the workers are laughing so hard that anyone would purchase one of these hideous monstrosities.

  • I have a Black Mac Mini as my primary desktop device. It has always been flakey.

When I tried to trade it in on an M1 MacMini, they didn’t even offer me a Gift Card!?

I’m currently in the process of migrating everything to Linux, where possible.

  • Anyone who uses gMail knows (or should know) that their data is being used for commercial purposes. Any business that uses Google.Business or MS Office should also be aware that they are giving away all their corporate secrets, regardless of any “Opt-In”/“Opt-Out” broken promises.

  • If they get Apple Intelligence into a functional form, (and not an embarrassing hilarious punchline in an anecdote), the will be profiting of my data.

They can claim that it is Opt-In only (until a bug the next software update ‘accidentally’ changes my Opt-out status) and they can Anonymize my data, but that still doesn’t change the fact that they inferred that hey wouldn’t use my data.

At least their user abuse is still less than Mozilla and Google threw out the “Don’t be Evil” motto decades ago…

    BYD and VIN numbers

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/byd-under-fire-customers-in-vin-mixup/

Considering that the VIN number needs to be inspected and verified for each vehicle during the entire Import/Compliance/Distribution/Delivery process, this is a pretty big balls-up.

QLD Caravan owners don’t know what they are doing.

Apparently, 90% of caravans are overloaded in QLD.

New Caravan owners also don’t know how to tow.

New (April 2023) Victorian Distracted Driving laws

What are peoples’ opinions of the new Victorian distracted driving rules?

My interpretation is that they are more lenient than the previous rules in some ways but much more onerous in others.

Vehicle camping at Mueller River, Croajingalong

Mueller River Campground has 5 vehicle-accessible sites, 3 pedestrian-access sites. Each site has access to the inlet beach for canoeing, fishing and swimming.

The nearby Thurra River Campground is not currently accessible due to fires and floods taking out the bridge.
