  • Yes! Lots of folks with chronic illness find themselves in a limbo where they can't get decent treatment or often precise diagnosis. Crowdsourcing relief has mixed results, but in such circumstances reports of rigorous trial and error with various approaches is sometimes helpful in the absence of the sort of care a lot of Americans now can't even hope for. I know this because I've been there. CIDP here since 2010.

  • I got really sick and debilitated. Got a grim prognosis that I'd just get worse. Got me to really take my health seriously and do all I personally could through a lot of trial and error to see what might make for a better quality of life. Lost massive weight, kept it off long-term, defied all expectations for over 2 decades, did some extraordinary stuff I'd probably not have attempted if not faced with the end of my life as I've known it.

  • Are you me?

There's that possibly apocryphal story in The Fly reboot with Jeff Goldblum about how Einstein had like seven identical sets of clothes so he didn't have to waste effort on deciding what to wear.

  • This is a fascinating project but I'm always frustrated when they don't share the formulation of their materials. Looks like a lot of reinforcement. A major downside to modular geodesic construction is the number of seams that invite leakage over time. A more monolithic application of a slower-setting material over a frame would be preferable to me.

Having experimented with a lot of concrete composites I'm always looking for the sweet spots of frugality, obtainablity, practically. This appears to be some geopolymer or magnesium cement -fairly exotic materials for me. Geopolymers often require a strong alkali to set. Not a huge fan of Portland, but at least it's obtainable and relatively inexpensive for sustainable use cases.

  • The Orville sorta confused me about their focus. Having not read anything about it, at first I thought it was a show solely to poke fun at Star Trek tropes. Then it appeared to try to actually emulate ST.

    Thanks for doing this

    Hi,

Appreciate the attempt at a community someplace other than Reddit. Long-time Ran Prieur reader currently living in Appalachia.

  • I often wonder about all these little coffee shops around here (Appalachian Kentucky). Almost all of them seem to have a religious bend. They inscribe bible verses around your cup like some kind of incantation. Would bet it's store policy and not just them wanting to inject gospel into your day. Is coffee even mentioned in the Bible?

  • I have a neuromuscular demyelinating disorder called CIDP. And some other health complications including getting COVID induced pulmonary embolisms and being on a blood thinner that has interfered with my normal regimen of managing CIDP.

  • I'm chronically ill. My ability waxes and wanes. When folks see me out doing something challenging, they tend to assume I'm just fine and must be some shiftless malingerer. Rather than understanding I've sunk a lot of time and preparation into trying to be ok for that occasion.

  • Except it's not just very stupid people. It's a big demographic swath. Some folks know what psychological buttons to consistently push and keep pushing those very reliable buttons. These are old tricks, but they're now amplified by the technology of new media -and these dillweeds have great feedback now thanks to social media to know if this week's shenanigans are playing well so they can adjust accordingly. A mess. Humankind's evolutionary biology weaponized to the benefit of a few. It's where we are.

    Newbie podcaster seeks recommendations

    Hi,

I see there are no posts here so I'll ask some questions and maybe it will prompt further discussion.

I'm an old-school broadcaster that would like to use my skills in the podcast medium. I have some ideas for what I believe are solid foundations for podcasts and have the audio production fairly squared, but I want to know what options exist today for hosting on the frugal and diy side. And strategies for multi-platform release, and eventual audience financial support. I see lots of folks putting out their shows across YouTube, etc as well as an RSS feed. Often using Patreon in lieu of sponsorship.

Hoping some experienced folks can throw out some options and what has worked for them. I'd like to not get encumbered in some host that will be difficult to leave later if their terms or service change -as this seems to be a growing problem with all internet media.

    Thanks!
