How an Israeli-US Startup Wants to Make Geoengineering Profitable

For those living in Asia and other parts of the world where big cities generally = bad to dangerously bad air, the idea of putting more stuff in the atmosphere because global warming sounds like an intuitively bad idea. That is before getting to the fact that there is no meaningful regulation of geoengineering, that there are serious questions as to whether the effects of any operations can be contained, and the standards for determining effectiveness versus harm. This like GMOs is on its way to become a great experiment upon the general public without consents or controls.

On top of that, the Israeli angle gives me the willies. Since this is a commercial operation, if any of its experiments actually do prove to be harmful, the odds seem high that those approaches would be repurposed as weapons. In fact, it’s almost certain that these applications would produce faster and greater profits than the climate-change-combatting geoengineering sort.

Whistle Blowing at Tesla

We haven’t written about Balan’s case before because it’s been such a long time coming, and filled with various arcane legal wranglings. There will likely be more steps to come, many of which are boring legal maneuvers, but perhaps this case will now have a chance to go more public now that the arbitration decision has been thrown out.

The environmental burden of the United States’ bitcoin mining boom

Bitcoin mines—massive computing clusters generating cryptocurrency tokens—consume vast amounts of electricity. The amount of fine particle (PM2.5) air pollution created because of their electricity consumption and its effect on environmental health is pending. In this study, we located the 34 largest mines in the United States in 2022, identified the electricity-generating plants that responded to them, and pinpointed communities most harmed by Bitcoin mine-attributable air pollution. From mid-2022 to mid-2023, the 34 mines consumed 32.3 terawatt-hours of electricity—33% more than Los Angeles—85% of which came from fossil fuels. We estimated that 1.9 million Americans were exposed to ≥0.1 μg/m3 of additional PM2.5 pollution from Bitcoin mines, often hundreds of miles away from the communities they affected. Americans living in four regions—including New York City and near Houston—were exposed to the highest Bitcoin mine-attributable PM2.5 concentrations (≥0.5 μg/m3) with the greatest h

They are talking about striking in the national media, a conversation started by an Alexander-Hamilton-moderate-conservative. This is it, it has hit the mainstream media and word is getting out to the people that aren't necessarily in the 50501, and like organizations, loop.

Trump’s trade war may still tank the economy

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28080059

Summary

Despite a temporary pause on some tariffs, economists warn Trump's trade war continues to pose serious risks to the U.S. economy.

Current import taxes now exceed levels seen during the 1930s Great Depression. A Yale analysis estimates a $2.4 trillion tax increase over 10 years, costing households $4,400 more.

Tariffs on Chinese imports have reached 145%, driving up prices and investor anxiety. Markets briefly surged after Trump’s announcement but quickly fell again.

Critics highlight Trump’s deep misunderstanding of trade mechanics and fear long-term economic damage from persistent uncertainty.

To date, 5,282 hens have been distributed to residents, and not only have the residents received a plentiful supply of free eggs, but food waste has also been averted from landfill as chickens are fed kitchen scraps which would otherwise be thrown away.

GOP megadonor rages at Trump’s ‘bulls**t’ tariffs

geteilt von: https://europe.pub/post/159443

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/27935573

Summary

Home Depot co-founder and GOP megadonor Ken Langone blasted Trump’s sweeping tariffs as “bulls--t,” calling the 10% across-the-board rate and country-specific hikes—like 34% on China and 46% on Vietnam—“too aggressive” and poorly calculated.

Langone criticized the administration’s formula, based on trade deficits, as nonsensical.

Other prominent figures, including economists and billionaires like Stanley Druckenmiller, Bill Ackman, and Elon Musk, have also spoken out.

Critics warn the tariffs hinder negotiation and lack sound economic grounding. Langone said Trump is being “poorly advised” on trade policy.

  • Getting the economy back on track for growth was a central theme of the election campaign. The problem with this is that economic growth is not the actual goal of economic policy, but related aspects such as jobs or government revenue. It is to be hoped that the coalition negotiations will take this into account. An article by Steffen Lange.

During the election campaign, the parties largely agreed that economic stagnation in Germany was a problem that needed to be solved. The responses of the CDU/CSU and SPD were more different. While the CDU/CSU primarily focused on tax cuts, the SPD added bonuses for investments. Both also call for lower energy prices.

These are the standard answers from the various political parties on how to support economic growth. The extent to which they really lead to economic growth has been the subject of controversial debate for decades. However, that is not the topic here. Instead, the following is about whether the proposals are suitable for solving the problems in Germany that lie behind the demand for growth.

There is now a broad consensus among scientists that economic growth in itself is not a sensible economic policy goal. This is because economic growth can only ever be a means to an end. In most cases, the ends are (full) employment, higher income, more private consumption or higher government revenue. It is therefore never about economic growth per se, but about what growth can achieve for society as a whole.

The question of whether the proposals of the potential coalition parties would increase economic growth is therefore not relevant. Instead, the focus should be on whether the indirect goals - jobs, income, etc. - can be promoted by the proposals. And whether they would exacerbate other problems - above all climate change. Let's go through the aspects one by one.
