  • I mean, it is in use for 3/4 of the year. (That's 0.75 for you metric twats who don't understand fractions)

  • Guillotine Party. A Democratic version of the Tea Party. Don't promote a third party; replace the current one from the inside out.

  • 91% income tax on >$1 million, like we had in the most prosperous decades of the 20th century.

  • This doesn't sound bad at all. This sounds like someone other than Google will be able to have a meaningful affect on web development.

  • Casting a vote is as effective at achieving political objectives as using Purell a couple times a week is at eradicating COVID.

Voting isnt pointless, it's just not nearly enough.

  • Negative prices are only mentioned in passing, as a very rare phenomenon

Negative prices are occurring more and more frequently. The cause is baseload generation: it can't be dialed back as quickly as solar increases during the day, and it can't be ramped up as fast as solar falls off in the evening. The baseload generators have to stay on line to meet overnight demand. Because they can't be adjusted fast enough to match the demand curve, they have to stay online during the day as well.

The immediate solution is to back down the baseload generators, and rely more on peaker plants, which can match the curve.

The longer term solution is to remove the incentives that drive overnight consumption. Stop incentivizing "off peak" consumption, and instead push large industrial consumers to daytime operation.

  • That's the common thought, but it rests on the assumption that demand cannot be manipulated.

Legacy generation incentivized overnight consumption, when the grid had excess production capacity it needed to unload. With solar, we need to reverse those incentives. If it is harder to produce power overnight, we can drive large industry (like steel mills and aluminum smelters) to switch from overnight operations to daytime consumption.

Overnight storage is something we do need, but it is not efficient, and the need for it should be avoided wherever possible.

Parking garages are usually full during the day, when solar is at its highest generation. In the near future, as EV adoption rises, parking garages need charging stations at every space, sucking up every "excess" watt on the grid.

  • With the Trump administration arresting judges it doesn't like, judges need to start deputizing individuals to execute orders of the court.

  • Well, that's a start.

Somebody helpfully created a short list of the people who need to be removed from the DNC.

  • You're denying reality. That man didn't care how the people he assaulted identified as. Men don't care if the women they rape identify as men.

To my way of thinking, rape is wrong regardless of what gamete the rapist produces; regardless of what gamete the victim produces.

  • You are conflating scientific issues with social issues.

The social factors are that a person claiming to be a man, wears masculine clothing, has masculine physical characteristics, such as a beard, large physical stature, deep voice, yet this person is trying to enter a female restroom.

The science says this person produces the larger, "egg" gamete, and is therefore female. By your "scientific" argument, this person-claiming-to-be-a-man is actually a women, and therefore entitled to the use of this women-only space.

Your interests here are social, not scientific. That this man produces eggs is not a significant factor; this is a social issue, not a scientific one. You have precisely zero interest in the biological condition of this person; this person is a man, just as they claim to be. The fact that they produce egg cells is not at all relevant: this egg-producing man should be denied access to this women-only space. The fact that they produce egg cells should not be a defense against their conduct.

There is nothing "scientific" about prohibiting this egg-producing man from using a restroom used by women. The only winning argument you have for keeping that FtM man out of the ladies room is social.

  • The reality is that you produce one of two gamete sizes, and that determines your biological sex.

You defined "sex" on the basis of "gamete production". So, my comment should be read as:

Until you are trying to produce offspring with them, or providing them with medical treatment, you have precisely zero interest in the sex gamete production of another person, let alone a scientific interest.

Socially, the presence of a beard is a far more relevant characteristic than the specific gamete an individual produces. Or the timbre of someone's voice. When a 6'2", 250lb person with a heavy beard and a deep, booming voice, claims to be a man and walks into the women's restroom, the fact that they actually produce the larger, "egg" gamete isn't particularly relevant.

  • It takes an immense amount of privilege to claim that sex doesn't matter in the real world.

Where did I make such a claim?

My claim was that the specific gametes an individual may or may not produce is not socially relevant. Whether a person is socially a "man" or a "woman" is not a question of what gamete (if any) they produce. The offense you are taking above is to your own position.

Science has no interest in this social issue. Science's concern is only with regard to the medical needs of the individual. Unless you are trying to procreate with them, or provide them with medical treatment, you have precisely zero interest the nature of their gametes.

  • Mailable perishable matter may be sent at the mailer’s own risk

The regulation you cited does not strictly prohibit the mailing of "perishable items".

  • I get this pretty bad from time to time. Usually, I'm spelling a word over and over again. Sometimes, the chorus of a song.

When I consciously recognize I'm doing it, I can usually force myself to switch from one word to another, and after three or four times, I lose interest in it.

Worst is waking up in the middle of the night doing it. I try to avoid it by keeping video playing overnight.

  • Winning

  • Sounds like a pyramid scheme.

  • Nope! That's normal, expected behavior.

Anyone know of any interesting, money-making hobbies or flexible gigs?

I do steady, part time work as a blacksmith, because I love it.

I also work for a hot air balloon ride company, again, because I love it. But, the balloon business is seasonal and weather dependent. We fly about 8 months out of the year, and about half our scheduled flights are canceled due to weather.

I'm looking for one more hobby/gig to do in the off-season or when it's just not flyable.

Something more interesting than DoorDash... I really don't want to go back to that.

"Could not determine post to comment to"

Gripe #1: From inbox, replying directly to a comment, I get the error "Could not determine post to comment to". I don't have this problem when I am viewing a comment in a post's, thread, only when viewing it from the inbox.

Gripe #2: Tapping the comment in the inbox takes me to the comment thread for the post, but does not take me to the specific comment within that thread. In a long thread, I can't always find the specific comment I am trying to reply to.

    Edit: version 0.2.4

Edit2: Gripe #3: haven't figured out how to edit posts within Thunder; had to switch to Connect to make these edits...

Error: "could not find comment key xxxxxx for navigator"

I am getting this error pretty regularly. I'll see a message in my inbox, and when I tap through to view it in context, it's missing. Can't find a cause or a workaround.
