  • AI can't detect birth certificates but you what it can do... Racism TM

Sidenote: with the current DoJ policy being no records = terrorists lacking complete profile

"The lack of a criminal record does not indicate they pose a limited threat," according to Cerna's declaration. "The lack of specific information about each individual actually highlights the risk they pose. It demonstrates that they are terrorists with regard to whom we lack a complete profile."

The AI will have an easy job 'filling in the missing details' for the government.

  • Well, I do remember being worried about whether I could ever be within 2 metres of anyone else ever again...

That said, I have learned really that it takes an event that kills millions spread all over the world at essentially the same time for people and our legislatures to act. I thought nothing would ever get us to do anything seriously about the climate crisis but when we all stayed home for a bit we actually managed to reverse the upward trend in emissions for a time.

  • This is all from a single source. Someone who says "all chemicals are bad", and "doubts" compounds have any practical use. Good for her for doing research and experiments, but I'm very skeptical of this on its own without external corroborating evidence.

  • It was a 3 vs 1 for a lot of it, but Carney held his own. In typical debate criteria, sure you can say Poilievre was able to talk the loudest and most able to make his case uninterrupted, so saying he "won" is a plausible interpretation of events. But credit to Carney, from a zoomed out Macro view, it was one soft-spoken reasonable guy vs. 3 career politicians.

I don't know how anyone doesn't see Trump-mini when they hear Poilievre speak. But nonetheless...

Singh was give and take with Carney, kept a narrow focus on a subset of issues, acted as the "attack dog" for Carney against Poilievre.

Blanchet laid out a reasonable case for Quebec, definitely fell somewhat short of being able to convince the people that are putting Quebec separatism aside for national unity at this current moment.

Carney, went with a strategy to never punch down and hardly wavered from that, drawing a huge contrast to Poilievre. The question is whether voters will take anything away from that debate.

  • Every single photo and video from CECOT is staged. We already get a sense of what it is like in the actual prison from stories, photos, even the staged videos. It's a concentration camp, and maybe even a death camp, it's no hotel and these photos aren't fooling people on that.

The fact... says he met with Garcia and Garcia is alive is proof

Doubters would be asking for real proof left, right, and center rather than second-hand.

These pictures don't prove anything, Garcia could be dead in those pictures and they could have taken him to a goddamn taxidermist and posed him.

I don't know what you would want from the Senator. If he was talking to a stuffed corpse, once he leaves El Salvador, there's nothing stopping Sen. Van Hollen to say so or at least tell his wife in confidence.

  • Wow... just wow...

    It's heartbreaking and enraging.

We're essentially at the point where the Israeli government could justify the Holocaust as long as the Nazis said "Hamas officers hiding among them" before killing people. The genocide is not only cruel but a callous waste of life, hope and talent.

    Post-debate thoughts? Pensées Après-débat ?

  • Sometimes we Canadians overlook ourselves, too...

Just as one example: the National Film Board making and promoting Canadian films just seem like some art-school hobbyists in comparison to the USA. You see all the big-name Canadian actors ending up in Hollywood blockbuster movies.

  • I will return to New York, one day. I loved visiting the Big Apple. But not now. Not unless Trump is out of the office, in prison, or both.

Just because random extrajudicial kidnappings by ICE aren't happening to everyone, doesn't mean it can't happen to anyone.

CN Tower repeater expected to go live today

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/42400858

Ihave a unique opportunity to add a node at the Tower LNB ring. However I'm struggling to source a Meshtastic gateway that meets the requirements I'v been given. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Power will be provided over 48v POE ONLY
    2. Remote management is a must, consider both internet provided over ethernet and 4G/LTE as backup (fw updates)
    3. Maximum 5db gain antenna can be used positioned on the LNB ring facing N-NW, must not exceed 1400mm in length
    4. Must be tuned for exactly 915mhz (l'm thinking cavity filter) to help with Rx.
    5. Enclosure and antenna must be pole mounted
    6. Absolutely no wifi 2.4 or 5ghz
    7. 500CND budget 'd like a set it and forget it approach. ls it even worth it?

According to a new study by the Angus Reid Institute, 76% of Canadians say they’re boycotting American products.

61% of Canadians also say they’re cancelling or delaying trips to the U.S., while 86% say they’re buying more Canadian products.

“The cross-border data already proves it: Canadians are cutting back their travel to the U.S. to levels last seen during COVID-19. These numbers may drop further, considering that 3 in 5 Canadians say they’re cancelling or delaying plans to travel across the border. In addition to this, the proportion of Canadians saying they’re boycotting American products or buying more Canadian products is already high and appears to be growing.”

Electronic Canadian Tax Return Software Options (NETFILE)

Filing taxes in Canada is relatively simple compared to the USA. See the site for various options, but try to find ones not operated by American firms such as H&R Block and TurboTax.

From a cursory search, TaxTron, GenuTax, Better Tax appear Canadian. Many are Pay-What-You-Want model.

If you have a complex tax situation and/or can't file online, and/or don't want to do the paper return yourself, consider seeing an independent Canadian accountant.

ETA: TurboTax blames filers for incorrect claims in Ontario getting audited, causing Canadians to owe thousands.

Hardbite - Potato Chips made in BC - Croustilles préparé à la C-B

Gluten-Free, Non-GMO Chips made in Surrey, BC, by a Canadian owned company, Naturally Homegrown Foods. Most flavours of theirs are vegan (Honey Dijon being an exception).

    On the about page:

Why do your products contain both domestic and imported ingredients?

To ensure our products remain non-GMO, sometimes sourcing within Canada is not an option. Our seasonings often contain spices, which may not be available in Canada due to our climate.

We also take transportation emissions into consideration. For example, we are far closer to say, Oregon than we are to Prince Edward Island.

Frugal tips when flying with Low Cost Carriers that only allow one small personal item

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/34559417

I wrote this because someone was looking for advice and Air Canada too is going to start charging for carry-ons on its lowest fare class.

This isn't about how to find a cheap flight, but if you have a ultra basic no-frills essentials-only bottom-dollar economy ticket, and need to figure out how to pack and make the most of it. I'm most experienced with Flair Airlines and flying in Canada but I expect many airline procedures to be similar, ymmv. In the past you could often get away without measuring the bag but they have been getting a little stricter about it recently.

    • Think beforehand what you actually will bring and what you plan to bring back. Will you pack food that will be gone before you return? An empty bottle? How many days of clothes do you need? How much in souvenirs will you get (if any?) Toiletries and extras, are there small things you will be able to pick up at minimal cost (such as soap bars that you get at a
