I'm Buckminster Burkeswood (I'm also, mr.prol1f1c), and I live in the layer above this one, the part you mistake for déjà vu. I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

  • This is a weird topic for me personally.

I made my living as a writer and illustrator for over 25 years before I retired. Yeah, I’m old (still running 5K's tho!!). But I think we’re on the edge of something pretty awesome creative-wise, if people would slow down and think for a minute. As in as much fun as the 1960's underground alt comix movement.

I’m not bothered by AI art. If I were 14, stuck in my bedroom, you can bet your ass I’d be using it. When I was coming up, people cried about Photoshop. Now it’s accepted. Video games were 2D, and if you didn’t go pixel by pixel, you “weren’t a real artist.” Now nobody cares. Drawing on tablets was once bitched about. Now it’s industry standard.

All of that tech, are just tools.

I remember the first computer-animated Disney film causing a massive shitstorm because it wasn’t “traditional.” When Toy Story was in production, it was the talk of the circles I was in around San Francisco. Some people were fascinated. Others were horrified. Now nobody questions whether it’s art.

I feel same way about AI. It’s a tool. If you don’t have a good idea or a clear direction, yeah, it sucks. But if you’re a filmmaker, you plan your shots, you block scenes, you know what you want, and you like the end result, then have at it.

The irony is I’ve been defending myself against AI accusations last few days, even though I don’t actually mind AI. If it fit my needs, I’d use it without hesitation. I’ve seen genuinely great AI work. I'm fine with AI being posted to my comm. I don't give two shits, because I think it's sparks more creativity than it kills.

There’s a difference between AI art and AI slop, just like there’s a difference between Photoshop art and Photoshop slop. The end product is what matters. If the result matches the creator’s intent, then it works.

If a movie director directs a film, but the crew is broke, the actors are volunteers, and the director didn’t write the script or act in it, is the result still art? Most directors don’t do everything themselves. Are they suddenly not artists?

What Lemmy really needs to understand is that everyone under 13 right now has zero hang-ups about AI. Some of the next generation’s most creative people are staying up late on school nights, making stuff. Right now. I know, because my gf has a 13 year old and a 12 year old. And that rules.

I don’t have a hate-boner for AI at all. Hell, I might start using it if I get an idea that actually fits it. As for the jobs, water usage, electricity, blah blah blah, new tech has always been a pain in the ass like that.

I’m excited about the future. AI included. It still comes down to creativity. No one is forcing anyone to use it. If you want crayons, use crayons. If you want to write a book longhand, do it. If someone wants to use AI, go for it. Art ain't a fuckin religion. Do whatever ya feel is right.

And about jobs: no job is guaranteed. Never has been. Never will be. Tech always knocks people out of work. Real creatives make things because they want to, and most of the time it doesn't involve getting paid shit. My graphic design graduating class (1989!) had 63 people in it at a small Midwest college. One other dude and I were the only ones who turned it into a career. It is what it is.

So yeah, I think this is an exciting time for art and creativity, not a scary one.

I’ll probably get on my soapbox and make a proper post about this later. I just needed to get it off my chest now, since I was accused of using AI because someone thought the hair in a comic panel sucked. Two days ago someone told me my font was AI. It wasn’t. I even took screenshots.

Hell, if the comic, Woke Cat, can be considered art, then anything can. haha

    tl;dr: I made my career as a writer/illustrator. I don't mind ai at all.

  • If only a boy who is half-horse would listen!

  • Non-horse kid is weird because "he" was a girl when I drew this strip originally, and changed it up on computer in post. The girl is actually from my other comic series, and her attitude doesn't fit. Because I am turned Centaur Boy into a douchebag. Also why weird cropping in last frame. And why the boy's face still looks like a girl. I didn't want to redraw, so I did stitch up in post.

If this was going to real print, I'd work harder. But it's Lemmy and I like putting the stuff out there fast and quick. You'll also see the version on .blaha where someone crossposted before I noticed my cut and paste in bottom was off in sizing. So it looks different than this one.

Brah, think about it: if AI was what I used, then I would have just told it to fix it. I've already put my steps up in my comm with pics of my process and screen caps of my photopea layers set up.

I'm happy to talk process, storytelling, scripting, fuckups, etc, tho. Especially if u are a fellow cartoonist! But you're reading way too deeply into it. I sketch my shit, magic maker a bit, take a pic w my phone, take onto computer, fill solids, add dusty overlay and specks, and post. It ain't that deep. It ain't that good. And it ain't ai.

Try it. Go tell ai to make a comic about a horseboy. I'm sure it'll do a better job than I did! lol

EDIT: Young Lemmy really really needs to look into the 1960's underground alt art movement. Mickey mouse fucking and eating ass (air pirates), betty boop being a slut, the scribbles of Jimbo, and weirdness of Raw. Also a lot of examples of using cheesy art to be sarcastic and wild. Any of that shit was posted now, you'd all cry ai. Someone the other day bitched that my art was too ugly to be created by a person (thanks!), and obviously he had never seen the Far Side, or the Oblongs or the original Addams Family strip from way before the tv show. Seriously, just wikipedia "Underground Comix." Oh and go discover a punk comic called "Jimbo," cuz uh... cuz that artist is GOAT!

  • I have several styles, and showed you how I do it, I also do Kloop!, Krunn and Frank, Beyond 8100, Ashtray Gospel, Snibbles, Pen!shedd, Anarkizt Kid, Man with a Casey's Cup for a Hand, It's Jayce!, Poopdeck Pappy, among others for my local alt weekly's in real life. I've been around and illustrating long before ai. If you wanna see ai slop in everything you look at brother, then that's on you.

I'm retired and I do lemmy comics for free to add content. So you liking or not liking my stuff makes no significant difference to me.

Trust me, I've had way meaner comments directed toward my stuff than an accusation of ai! Welcome to the art life for all the kiddies out there. lol Carry on, man. We're all gonna make it out ok. :)

EDIT: Wait till you see the crap I'm working on today and tomorrow. You'll hate it! lolol

  • Jokes on you then, cuz it's not ai. Feel free to see how I do my work here in my studio for my other series: https://reddthat.com/post/58650560

I've been a writer/illustrator for more years than you've been alive.

    More accurate would be:

"Why didn't you read the comic?"

"Because the creator is a smug unfunny asshole..." :)

  • Meh, everyone's stuff looks AI now, which was the the whole point and goal of AI. It's not that people's stuff looks like AI, it's that AI looks like everyone's stuff. If Diesel Sweeties came out to day, people would think it's AI.

Especially since most of us cartoonists, either create on or finish up on the computer. I sketch my stuff out, then fill out a lot of builds and solids in Photopea cuz I ain't gonna marker that shit all day. Plus I do a lot of resizing, cut and paste, flipping and clean up, so basically there's no way to tell any difference between it and ai now.

I read up on what some other writers and illustrators say about it, and the overwhelming advice is to just ignore. I documented my method in my comm, and now I'm done defending. I'm not even that great of an artist anyway, so that's why it's hilarious to me. One guy said my stuff was AI because my drawings are so ugly, and no one would draw that way on purpose!! My gf loved that one. lmao

People will like or not like what I make, not my problem anymore. If people think they can create comics like mine by simply pushing a button and have AI do it all (good luck with that!), then not much I can do about it. Anyway, thanks for your support and the explanation!

  • This comm hasn't been welcoming to my stuff in the past, so I'm not sure I have an answer. .ml has a bigger audience than my own comm, and I was banned from .world instance (not comics related) under a different name so I don't wanna get hit with ban evasion by posting over there. So I just sorta stuck with my own, and .ml just based on comm subscriptions.

But, I guess, keep it here and see what happens, because I do support people boycotting whatever they want, and sticking to their own values. So carry on I guess. Thanks for the explanation. Last time tho, someone accused me of being you, so it's kinda tricky and I don't want any drama.

  • Ya mean it's not because he's half-horse?

  • @cm0002@libretechni.ca I appreciate the crosspost, but I'd prefer you not crosspost to this comm, because I've posted my comic to two comms and I think having my stuff in 3 comms is a bit much and is a little too close to spamming for my taste. So can you please remove? Thank you!

  • Yay! Actually I wish more Lemmy's would stop it too. It brings down all the comments when everyone is so negative.

  • It is. Thank you!

  • thank you!!

  • I edited it just now, since my rant at the end has nothing to do with the series. lol I hadn't heard of this until today either. I was looking up the history of comics. He originally did paintings, of this subject, but the got lost in a fire. He also did another series, A Rake's Progress, which I found first, and it's what led me to this one.

  • Unfortunately, I think the world is gonna last plenty long. Things will get worse, but we ain't goin' anywhere. There's lots worse stuff we get to do before it all goes away! lol

  • Thanks for looking at it! Lemmy’s still relatively small, and that’s exactly why I’m excited. I’m working on Lemmy-only content like this because I want the place to develop its own culture and vibe, with original stuff people can’t get anywhere else. Less recycled political outrage w endless arguing, and more creative signal. Meh, that's sorta my goal anyway.
