  • I don't work in a kitchen anymore but the amount of single-use plastic used in chain restaraunts is soul crushing. Most folks have no idea

  • Unpopular Opinion @lemmy.world

Texting sucks. Phonecalling is the better way to communicate indirectly.

Unpopular preference, maybe? I've worked the title a few times but can't get it phrased as a concise opinion. Regardless, I think it still fits the spirit of the group.

SMS Texting in 2025 sucks. The overwhelming majority of "unknowns" texting me are marketing BS (that I didn't sign up for), scams, and other junk. It's almost at the same state that calling was ~10 years ago. Even besides that, texting a friend/family member to have a conversation feels so... wasteful? It's something I used to do and now never would. Anecdote: I also barely respond to texts at this point unless it's a direct question, "I'm at the store, do we need milk?" "Yes." Even still, half the time I'd just call them to say "yes." According to my cellular provider, I've sent 16 SMS messages since March 25th.

If I'm trying to contact someone, I always just call them unless I know they won't pick up and have told others to do the same with me.

Counterpoint to this is that some people think it's rude to col

What's a myth/misconception you heard about the world that's went away as you got older?

I realized today, it's been a minute since I head the "glass is actually a very slow moving liquid" myth from someone. Just wondering if there's been anything else like this since you were a kid.

  • That would bea very bad thing to say, you see. You know how, dispite "supply chain issues," grocery stores have been pulling record profits recently?

    Anecdote incoming:

My local grocery store is marking down eggs -30% and (presumably) throwing ones out that don't sell. Nobody is buying $7 cartons, they're just taking it off their grocery lists and finding substitutes

  • riiight, must've missed that part in leftist orientation.

Unrelated: thought's on the "both sides" argument?

  • Somehow, Oligarchy has arrived in America

  • Seriously though. Because half of these are the type of shit I posted ~10 years ago when we all were in on the joke. Is there literally any reason to think this is Elon Musk's "account"?

  • And Eastern European oligarchs and Middle Eastern oil tycoons who are bankrolling it. It's not an America thing lol

    Cocktails, the libationary art! @lemmy.world
    NigahigaYT @lemmy.world

TIL that IBA (International Bartenders Association) has good recipes for hundreds of popular cocktails on their website.

I sometimes struggle trying to find a good drink recipe and filter out the "that's not a real xyz, my buddy adds ___ to his" posts online. It seems like everyone has their own take on every named cocktail that it's hard finding what the real one is and what's just somebody (or something AI's) take on it. It's hard to trust that what you see is an authentic recipe or not.

While looking for something like an industry bartenders recipe book today, I found something even better: a free list on the International Bartender's Association's website.

Considering a refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q for use as a discrete HTPC / SteamLink console. Is this a good idea? Does anyone here have any experience with these?

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28083834

Windows 10/11 is a requirement because it will be a shared console, sorry y'all. I'm considering a refurb'ed model on eBay because some include Win10 Pro licenses, which would save ~$80 versus building from scratch.

The PC would be used for streaming media through Plex and maybe some light gaming via SteamLink, so specs aren't very important as long as it can handle basic web browsing and graphic output.

Has anyone here had any experience with these? I would imagine they're pretty no-fuss boxes given that they're business-class units, but I also understand that they're several years old. What' the upgradeability of them like? What specific models/SKUs would be recommended for this use / are there any other SFF PCs that are comparable?

Why are modern TVs so ugly? (5 television sets from the past)

Starting with the Panasonic TR-005 "Orbital." Beautiful little thing with a rotating base. Throw it on a coffee table when you want to watch a program and then pick it up and tuck it on the shelf afterwards. TVs used to be treated as (and designed to be) appliances, not wallpieces. Photos taken from this LA listing.

    Scatter Shelf by Nendo (2011)

Why am I posting a 2 dimensional grid?

    I'm not.

    From Nendo:

The scatter shelf is composed of 5mm black acrylic shelves in a grid form, stacked in three layers and slightly displaced. The resulting shelving unit is not only structurally strong but creates a visual effect in which objects placed on the shelves appear as though caught in a spider’s web when viewed from the front. When viewed on an angle, the glossy acrylic face creates a series of reflections within the shelves, making the ‘opaque’ acrylic appear to be transparent.

Wow, wow, wow if this isn't beautiful. A perfect example of how tubular framing doesn't have to mean Bauhaus.

Photos stolen from Museo Della Sedia. Pay the original source some love because I'm worried that compression is going to ruin some of the beauty here.

    MP-115 Chair by Percival Lafer (1971) #fuckyourtogosofa

Percival Lafer is quickly becoming one of my favorite modern designers. All his stuff looks so... not-European, for lack of a better word. No clue how it is south of the Equator, but there's very little discussion of him here. These chairs are one of many designs of his I've found reading through Percival Lafer: Design, indústria e mercado . Above pic is one I took with my phone so sorry if the quality is abhorrent. I haven't got a scanner here.

    Software recommendations @lemmy.world
    NigahigaYT @lemmy.world

(Not a software, but a service) I'm looking for a good, non-invasive and lightweight app/webservice that I can use to quickly upload photos from different devices onto one central image folder.

As the title says, I'm looking for something I can use to access a cloud image folder from many devices. Something lightweight without much bloat and good privacy features and no ads with a decent storage limit (and that doesn't compress HD photos to hell)

Free is best but paid is okay too.

I feel like there's an obvious answer here but I've yet to find one.
