Sign I just made for a friend, done with a Dremel

Started with a stair tread from Home Depot. Cut off the corners with the scroll saw. Routered the edges with the Roman Ogee bit. Then I printed out the letters and traced them on with transfer paper. Used a Dremel with a very small round bit to cut the letters. Filled with black acrylic paint. Sanded off the excess from the face. Finished with Amber colored Shellac from Bullseye.

  • Dude is just pump and dumping the whole fucking economy

  • Okay I have the jig clamped to a board here. I use a bit with a 3/4” diameter. If I run it down the length of this jig it will cut a 3/4” dado. So to make the jig I glued a piece of 1/4” plywood onto a wider piece of 1/4” plywood. Then I used a 3/4” router bit to cut through the wider piece by running it against the glued on upper piece.

So wherever I clamp this jig is exactly where my 3/4” dado will go

Here is the circular saw jig that is made and used the same way

    Did I explain it well?

  • Cool project! I’ve made a jig to do this that’s so much simpler. It’s the same thing as a circular saw jig. I just clamp it onto where I want a dado

  • That was so rad. I love the fleshy pad on the chest and the weird mouth placenta balloon

  • Looks great! Thanks for sharing

Mirror frame finished! I love it

The inspiration is from the Elven art in LOTR and Rings of Power

Having another go at this art nouveau mirror frame

It’s going so much better this time! I made a stencil out of hardboard using a jigsaw and scroll saw. Then I routered it into oak. Now I’m using a chisel to carve out the pieces my router couldn’t reach, and to make rounded parts pointy. I have completed this bottom corner. Carving is my favorite thing about woodworking. I like to listen to podcasts and just be in my own little zone.

Messed up too much on this mirror frame, so I'm starting over on it. But this time I'll have experience

This mirror frame was inspired by an archway in Rings of Power. I’ve always loved the Elven art and design in LOTR. I made a stencil with my scroll saw out of hardboard. But I have the wrong scroll saw blades and I’m impatient so it came out a bit rough and uneven with my hand- drawn design. I had some old oak and some new stock that I glued up together and the difference shows. I glued the stencil to the oak but as I began to router it out, the glue gave out and my router slipped, tearing into the piece. I also routered too deeply I think. Then I broke a piece off. Just one mistake after another really.

But that’s how it goes sometimes. So I’m starting over completely and this time I can learn from each mistake I made. The only thing I’m stuck on is that the hardboard (“chalkboard”) didn’t stick well enough with wood glue or CA glue… so idk what to try next. Maybe 1/4” plywood with carpet tape?

Made the potting shed of my dreams ❤️

The potting bench has a hole so that soil can be brushed into the bucket below. I was able to salvage some of the older boards from the old pile of junk that stood there before, which are in the roof. Speaking of the roof, see how some of it is clear? I’m going to build a cold frame into that part of the roof for hardening off plants! I’m having a hard time deciding how to do that but though.

The wife wants gravel on the ground but I’m not so sure. I think that the gravel will just end up filling with dirt and debris and weeds. I think I might prefer to just leave it bare earth. What do you think?

Dumb question: is a cubic yard of soil 3 times the size of a cubic foot of soil ?

Why does it seem like a yard is so much bigger than 3 bags of soil. What’s the deal

Does anyone have a trick for this problem with self-driving screws?

Situation: using a screw gun to drive in the self-driving screws (the star shaped ones) horizontally, and sometimes at a difficult angle above my head. Hard to get good leverage like that. The driver starts spinning the screw but it doesn’t catch right away and then the screw jumps out and falls on the ground.

Has this happened to you? Is there a trick for that?

I call it a Looky Lou. Can you guess what children's book inspired me?

Sorry for the glare making it hard for you to play along. I’ll have to take better pics. I came up with the idea last year, but I live on a dead end street. Then my cousin said I could put it at his house. He was helping me glue in the pieces when the concept of it finally clicked for him and he got so excited about what clues you could give to search for and things to put inside. It’s so fun. I went to the Goodwill “bins” and just filled up a box with every little object I could find. The pieces are hot glued in place just in case the box rattles. Maybe in a few months we can change the sign so you have to find new things. I can also remove entire shelves or maybe just pop off the toys. Hot glue comes off easy enough.

I live in Portland and would love to make another and find someone around willing to host it in their yard. So if you’re interested let me know.
