  • As a happy and satisfied Linux gamer I disagree.

Linux is the best OS overall, at least for me, but not the best for gaming for most people. Not yet.

Emulators Xenia (xbox 360 emulator) was not mentioned, because it is Windows only. There is no Xbox 360 emulator for Linux.

Game compatibility 80% are platinum or gold on ProtonDB https://www.protondb.com/

This is impressive, but you can't claim that a system that can't play up to 20% of game titles is better. Not to mention that some of the other titles might need some tinkering as well.

Conclusion Linux gaming is now a great and viable option for most people. But it still isn't better than Windows if you don't care about bloatware, security or privacy, and just use your machine exclusively for gaming.

Bonus: Linux is free, so you could maybe also get slightly better hardware by selecting it over Windows.

  • First explain problem briefly. Wait for response, then: "Talk with human"

Works on most bots I have talked to. My theory is that they want to have some context before the talk. Maybe to route it to the correct representative. Or just that you have given the bot a shot at helping.

  • Honestly the thing I kinda care more about would be a fully developed sandboxed permission controlled system like Android, just with the storage permissions like GrapheneOS. I know there are some support for this, flatpak & flatseal etc. but it is not prominent enough. I want it to cover everything, like android.

  • I am not so sure. Trump couldn't even hold his moronic tariffs for more than a few days, before having to cave.

USA does not produce much besides services. China have a big surplus of production.

China also owns a huge amount of US debt. They can start dumping it which will increase the interest rate on the huge US debt. This would quickly put the US in a difficult position. Any solution besides just paying down the debt would weaken trust in the US, so they either have to take it or make everyone in the world lose faith in the current financial system with the US as it's guardian.

  • I suggest you tell her that this is a problem, and that this is affecting your friendship. That if she does not try to educate herself, that you will have to reconsider the friendship.

Tell her that trans people have something called gender dysphoria. Reference Wikipedia and DSM. Prove that this is a real thing. Just like her autism. The best would probably be to just send her a couple of links with a short, but honest take on how this is a problem for you. Let her read it herself om her own time.

The last thing you should do is let the friendship end without talking to her. Its important to confront people, and give them a chance to change their mind. People deserve that.

  • I would like to have the same sound. But increase the volume, duration and lower the frequency drastically.

I want people not only too hear them, but to feel them. When I play my trumpet at night I want to wake my neighbour.

Source of new perspectives in the form of high quality chronicles / editorials

I really enjoy getting my view of the world challenged, preferably through chronicles and editorials about society, ethics, politics etc.

I consider myself to be open to new ideas and change. I do however have certain strongly held values, which are harder to change.

I know reading books from different authors could also accomplish the same thing. But I find that I rarely have the patience to follow one specific political point of view for an entire book.

I am interested in original ideas, or old ideas that are not mainstream. Pretty much most points of views.

I find that editorials and chronicles is a good way to grow and either enforce or weaken a belief.

Any good RSS feeds, newspapers etc. that focuses heavily on this?

  • Free as in freedom, not only free as in beer. That is how FOSS works. Also one of the things I find appealing about it.

By focusing on FOSS being this super serious thing, we kinda lose what is great about it. Everyone is welcome and free to use it as they see fit. That is by design (see licenses). A lot of FOSS is passion projects by people on their spare time, they do it because it is fun / fulfilling. We need all hands on deck, and FOSS should also be playful, experimental, and novel. FOSS is this super idealistic gift to humanity, from humanity. Every piece of FOSS software contributes to the collective human database of ideas and software.

The "us reasonable users" is a really unfortunate way of sharing your opinion on this matter. Is it unreasonable to be a femboy and use FOSS/Linux? By being elitist like this, I kinda get the same reaction you claim to get from this user. I don't want to be clumped in with the users that feel they are superior to everyone else and acting like it, and gatekeeping the FOSS community and its representation.

  • I wouldn't say this is an insane take from that person, or misandrist really. I have no other meanings in regards to what that person says, but in this case this is a sensible take.

The whole meme is about how women are "hysterical" and overly emotional. While men are calm and chill creatures.

It caters to stereotypes that view women in a negative light. I know exactly zero women who act like this. Most women are calm and chill people as well. Unless you of course call them hysterical or overly emotional, then they can rightfully get a bit mad. You would probably react that way also. It kinda infantalizes you.

I would as a man, expect my best friend to tell me if he's moving, expecting a child, or is getting married, within a reasonable timeframe. That is within a couple of months.

  • I wouldn't mind microtransactions, gacha games and gacha mechanics if there were sane upper limits to spend.

I was trying to learn how different gacha games work and monetization in f2p games in general, especially obes for smartphones.

I was surprised about how similar all the methods across games are. Some were a lot worse than others though.

I think the monetization method is sometimes viewed as acceptable by some, because the games often have a lot of content and can be a lot of fun to play. The thing I really dislike is that it's unfairly monetized. Some people pay the majority of the income, they are also known as whales. There are of course some people that spend small sums, but the whales is where it is at.

After Arcade games went out of fashion we had a nice long period in which players paid about the same for a game, and got the same experience.

Now vulnerable people are paying more than they can afford to finance the game for everyone, and still everone gets a limited experience.

Some of the games I enjoyed the most had terrible gacha mechanics. One of them had items and mounts with 1/500 chance per pull. Of course it is designed so that it appears as 1/10, but it is really 1/500. To justify this they had the PITY system. Yes, thats the actual name of it. The pity system makes it so that after buying 500 pulls ypu are guaranteed the mount.

The price for 500 pulls? 500$

After the free pulls you could play to get, about 480$.

So I actually can't get the entire game for even 500$..

That was just one of many such instances. I could probably spend more than 10 000$ and still not unlock absolutely everything.

Was it purely cosmetic? Nope. It gave an advantage too.

Legislation that effectively adds an upper limit to unlock the entire game with a sensible maximum monthly cost for new content, is needed in my opinion.

  • Of course, but we are as a society so far away from that. It requires a bigger cultural shift than we are anywhere near. Even the thought of an inheritance tax is very unpopular.

Yes, even as a very social democratic country with a highly educated populace, we can be pretty stupid about taxes.

Also most really rich people have their wealth in assets and make their money as gains on those assets. So it does not really tax the most important people, except maybe some C-suites.

  • This is in Norwegian, but most services is based on this number https://www.nav.no/grunnbelopet

Which currently is 124 028 NOK which is roughly 10 350 euros.

This number is referenced as G (Grunnbeløpet)

So for instance if I lose my job I can get up to 62.4% of a salary up to 6G. Which is the maximum.

    Meaning the maximum payout is 744 168 (6G) * 0.624 = 464 360 NOK.

We have tons of calculations like this for all sorts of welfare services.

Every year in may this number is adjusted.

  • Everytime I hear arguments against wealth tax, gift tax, property tax or inheritance tax. It's the same argument, it's unfair towards the people who has worked all their life and want to leave their already taxed money to their family.

In Norway we have no inheritance tax and no tax on gifts. Most people have no taxes on homes either. We do have some wealth tax.

My main issue with the arguments against it is that its is lacking imagination. We make the rules, we can decide to make it fair. We can set a limit for when taxation occurs at a really high number. Just so that 98% of Norwegians get zero taxes on these things.

Zero taxes for inheritance up to 1 000 000 euros and then 75% on every euro above. Is possible.

Zero taxes on gifts up to 50 000 euros a year is possible.

No taxes on homes worth less than 1 000 000 is possible.

Bringing wealth with you when you permanently move out of the country is possible for values less than 5 000 000 euros for instance.

Then adjust for inflation every year (like we do with many of our welfare systems)

If we do this we can get rid of the wealth tax that the rich hate so much (because they are disadvantaged owners compared to owners of businesses in other countries)

No regular people will feel these taxes at all, and they make sure that the wealth is distributed over time. It's still possible to get rich, and remain rich. But your children can be rich but not insanely rich.

Exactly what the rates should be is up for debate, but this system is in my opinion a better one.

  • This seems like an attempt to undermine NATO. The only time article 5 has been used was after 9/11.

By saying Europe had a choice and should have resisted, he lays the foundation for the US to not follow through on their NATO commitments.

Edit: The commenter below is right, the article 5 was used for Afghanistan, not Iraq. My whole argument is thus invalid

Hi! I am a stranger on this instance, I have read a lot of warnings about the "tankie triad", but wanted to see for myself and keep an open mind.

I watched this video, and it made me want to take a deep dive into socialism/communism, with as much objectivity as I can. https://youtu.be/BeRjTtKFlVM

I understand how capitalism works, and I have doubts that it is a sustainable system for society long term, but social democracy has been a good way of keeping capitalism in-check in Norway. So even if capitalism is not ideal, it is in theory possible to tax the rich more and keep the whole thing going in the future. I also understand the exploitation and the extraction of surplus value, rent seeking etc.

Other capitalist countries such as the US is currently struggling with basic human needs. And that is "the shining beacon of capitalism".

In Norway it has for a long time been common to use the US as an exampl

How to protect against someone forcefully unlocking my phone and password manager with biometrics?

I really like the convenience of using fingerprint unlock for lockscreen and password manager. I do however don't like the thought of being forced to unlock both physically.

    I use Android with GrapheneOS.

I have set up lockdown, but it takes some time to hold the power button and then click lockdown.

    Any creative solutions?

What are my options for SMS/RCS?

I have a lot of friends and family that use SMS/RCS and I can't get them all to use Signal.

I have the option to send SMS from a simple FOSS SMS app, and then we can communicate back and forth.

I've heard something about RCS getting E2EE and find that appealing.

What is the future of RCS? What are my options, and should I just stick with SMS?

Edit: Stick with SMS when I have to, and use Signal etc when possible ofc.

Adding reviews with political opinions might remove the review.

So it might be best to just rate it based on features if you write something, or just rate the apps without text at all.

What's your opinion in bias and censorship in LLMs?

I recently watched a Norwegian TV show where they pointed out that you can't even get ChatGPT to show you a boob. So I decided to test it, but being less explicit.

I couldn't even get ChatGPT to generate a renaissance painting of a woman with an exposed breast, like Botticelli's The Birth of Venus.

After that I attempted to get it to recreate the painting. It did not want to copy that painting either for copyright issues.. A public domain painting, even when pointing it out and it agreeing it did not want to do it.

When I ask it questions in regards to politics it does not seem to fare well either.

I feel that using the service kinda "trains me" to self-censor, and tries to remain artificially unbiased in a way that is uncanny.

What are your opinions about censorship and bias from LLMs/AI?

Are there any apps or services that aggregate RSS, Mastodon and Lemmy?

I want a single feed that I can customize and preferably weight based on how important I think something is.

Can I use "AI" generated assets for games?

I am developing a game, and I want some assets for it. i was thinking of drawing some assets and then ask the "AI" to generate xyz based on my drawing style.

I was also considering just having a very specific prompt and using that to generate the assets I need.

I know there is a lot of skepticism about AI generated images, art etc. is there something I should know? Is it copyrighted? Can I use it as inspiration and make my own assets that are similar but not the same?

I am also just considering buying assets, but fear that it might not give me everything I need.

    Any thoughts?

What happens if I use my freezer below -15C?

I have a chest freezer that has operating temperatures down to -15C. I want to leave it on the balcony, which has a roof and it is shielded from the elements. But for shorter periods of the year we get weather colder than -15C.

Will it damage the freezer? Will the freezer just stop running temporarily? If the ambient temperature is -20 and the inside is -5-10C then atleast it won't get hotter, so the food won't spoil if it gets colder inside.

Edit: I could connect a smart plug and disconnect it if below -15, if that would help
