  • Superficially, typing

    <Ctrl>

    +

    <left>

    seems to be the same as typing

    <Esc>

    <b>

    , but these are two completely different paradigms of using the editor.

    Vim does not use shortcuts or hotkeys to edit the text, it uses a language to communicate with the editor.

    For me, shortcuts and hotkeys are rote memorization, and I'm bad at rote memorization – compare your point "5. Ctrl-{ or } does this I think". Do I need Ctrl-left, Super-left, Alt-left, Shift-left or Ctrl-Shift-left to jump back a word?

    The vim editing language is mostly consistent and logical. I did not need to memorize it, I could learn and understand it. But that's just me.

    Far too much examples:

    Most commands are abbreviations – a for append, b for back, c for change, d for delete, e for end of word, f for forward, g for goto (and more), hjkl are special, i for insert, m for mark, n for next, o for open line, p for paste, q for reqord macro is a strange spelling, r for replace, s for substitute, t for to, u for undo, v for visual mode, w for word, x for extinguish, y for yank, z is just a prefix for arcane stuff. Capital letters are usually variants of their minuscle counterpart – like A for append at end of line.

    Commands take a repeat count, and a lot of commands take objects/movements, and these reuse the commands, like "delete inside backticks" => di`, "yank inside brackets" => yi{, "change up to third slash" => c3t/

    If you are fluent in vim, you won't type shortcuts while editing, you will talk to your editor.

    As for more compelling examples:

    "I'd like to change the next 2 sentences" translates to )c2)

    "Please format this paragraph." translates to gqap

    "Swap these two characters." translates to xp

    And I did not touch ex mode, vimscript and plugins yet.

  • Only this translation is false. The correct translation is

    "Cat David shows his citizen's shaft, so that he can stay with the chickens"

    "His xyz-ship" is "seine xyz-schaft" in German, while "seinen xyz-schaft" is a compound word meaning "his xyz's shaft". Just a tiny almost uncomprehensibly murmured -n difference.

  • I don't know where this claim of 90 % reduction in symptoms originated – the figures show an improvement of e.g. Bell 60 => Bell 80 for the Post Covid group, the other scales are similar. I'm not able to analyze all of the data at the moment, but at second glance this seems to be an effective treatment, changing the scores ~ 15–30 %. Far from 90 %. And the effect might be exclusive to Covid related problems.

    Edit:

    The responder rate was 90 %, not the reduction of symptoms.

  • Electricity is usually not made from fuel, though, but from a wide variety of resources. And you forgot the last step – transmission of heat from the stove to the food. Gas stoves are far inferior in this step, losing most of the heat into the surtounding air. Induction stoves have almost no transmission loss.

    Another reason is installation. In order to use gas in the kitchen, you have to have a gas pipe in the kitchen, which has become very unusual. During construction, it's easier and cheaper to not lay gas pipes. Most people do not have a choice – either you got an old house witha gas pipe in the kitchen or a newer one with a 400 V power outlet.

  • One issue often overlooked with prostate enlargement is Nykturia. Nykturia causes sleep deprivation, sleep deprivation causes scores of other problems from cardiac issues to psychosis. I'd say ~ 3 times getting up during the night might be tolerable for most peope, > 5 times will cause problems.

  • That's fascinating. Especially the rain part, because our Tesla's driving assistant just does not work in bad weather. I cannot imagine how it is technical possible to get a camera-based system to work reliably in bad weather without some mechanism to keep the cameras clean. Our rear camera is basically unusable during winter unless we get out of the car and clean it every single time we need it.

    Thank you for your advise!

Wer Werte erhalten will, muss Strukturen immer wieder verändern. Evolutionär.

  • That's possible, I'm comparing what I know.

    By the way, VW hasn't just a lane keeping tech, the car is able to drive autonomous in standard situations. Our VW (build 2022) was far better than our Tesla (build 2023) in lane detecting, lane keeping, reading traffic signs (dven in the Netherlands), navigation, detecting city and village boundaries, detecting crossroads, keeping distance and following lanes in curves – the tesla tends to ignore the law of physics and to go to fast. Tesla is far better at detecting waste bins though. It detects every single wastebin there is anywhere within 3 m of the road. VW lacks autonomous overtaking, and it slows for traffic lights but does not stop for them when they are red, that's two points for the Tesla. Though Tesla slows for traffic lights even when they are green.

    The VW was able to drive home from work almost autonomous – there were two crossings, one traffic light and one roundabout it needed my assistance. The Tesla would crash multiple times.

    The most annoying thing with the Tesla is that it does not cooperate with the driver. VW has a genuine assistant – the car drives, and when I correct it, the VW just smoothly accepts the correction and carries on. The Tesla just stops working anytime the driver intervenes.

    Wo kennt man das Wort "draschen"?

    www.duden.de draschen

Wo kennt man draschenden Regen?

    How can I add an emotional undertone in English?

    Context: I'm missing a cutting board. So I wrote in our telegram family group: "Wo ist eigentlich unser zweites großes Schneidebrett hin?" (literally: "Where is actually our second big cuttingboard thither?").

    By using the modal particle "eigentlich" I insinuate that something is oddly off and express an emotional state of curiousity and/or mild discontent.

    By adding "hin", I notify that I ask because it is not where it is supposed to be and not because I don't know where it should be.

    Now I ask myself, how would I express this additional information in English?

    Edit: Thank you all for your answers! I learned a lot. Just our cutting board is still gone, and probably enjoying it's freedom somewhere ... I suppose.

    Medication works –does it?

    Yesterday was a strange day. Until noon I was well as usual – 90 % on my new, cfs adapted wellbeing rating (would have been 45 % pre-cfs...). So, great day! Then I started to decline. fled work at 14:45. Was barely able to reach home. rested. watched a movie with the very discerning feeling I might overexert me by watching. Went to bed at 20:00, sleeping well using my night medication, waking after 9 h, feeling ok-ish, resting a bit more, wondering what caused this crash – well, it didn't really feel like a crash, should feel worse the next day if it was a crash. Strange. Getting up. Preparing coffee. deciding to apply my crash medication. So – 10 mg prednisolon in Wednesday medication. 5 in Thursday's – wait. Yesterday was Wednesday, wasn't it' I'm pretty sure about that. So why is Wednesday still full?

    TL;DR

    forgot to take medication yesterday, experienced it's worth anew.

    Sharing solutions is a good idea

    @[email protected]'s idea to share treatments that seemed to have worked for us is a good idea.

    So – here is my recipe:

    1. Acceptance of CFS and commitment to my new live.
    2. feeding my mitochondria dayly with Ribose (~ 2 x 5g), Carnitine (2 x 1 g), Magnesium (400 mg), Ubichinole (200 mg) and some B-Vitamine. I'm taking a combination substitute and forgot which one is important for mitochondrial function.
    3. supporting my hormones by taking L-Thyroxin 50 μg and Prednisolon 1.25 mg. Probably a pinch of Testosterone would be helpful, too.
    4. Fighting POTS with 2.4 mg Bisoprolol and compression stockings, if it's bad.
    5. Intensive aerobic training (aka pacing). At my lowest point, I bought a heart rate sensor to start aerobic training as outlined in the r/cfs wiki. I found out that walking in my appartement already triggered heart rates indicative of anaerobic metabolism. I had to slow down quite a bit for my body to become able to start regenerating.
    6. Using a script/app t
