  • Public transit is a thing you know...

The closest bus stop to my workplace is over a mile away and has a significant hill. It also snows here. Believe me, I'd love to ditch the car if possible, but... it's just not possible in my current living situation.

  • Joke's on you: I lay on my bed, bring up my knees, use my laptop on my waist while leaning against my legs, and touch the screen as needed when I can't navigate by keyboard.

I can't possibly do that with a non-touchscreen laptop anywhere near as easily.

Granted, that's probably it's only decent use case, but even so, for various, occasional operations, the touch capability is helpful.

  • Go on... so what's the right one? I can't understand why anyone would go to attack others without offering a superior alternative. Like, you may as well just not say anything, then. If you don't have a better idea, then theirs isn't worse because you didn't even provide a rebuttal.

I'm not even on the side of the person you responded to, but why would you not want to state what would work better? That's just trolling.

  • You mean */c/suicidebywords

  • you and your children entire neighborhoods

Boycott Steam and support GOG and itch.io!

  • most people won't read and you'll end up denying perfectly fine users.

I think that is a good outcome and that any such people are absolutely not "perfectly fine," correspondingly. I also think the count of such people would be very low in the first place.

  • I would say it's not a stretch to bet that Crest and Colgate are at the forefront of issues...

  • I don't have a fave distro because I must back up my PC's stuff first. I plan to try Bazzite, due to issues I've heard that my laptop has with Mint...

  • Darn. That's why I'm with SMPlayer; that time continuity is extremely helpful to the point of being a requirement for me. VLC also has it but it actually makes the jump-to-time prompt vanish if you take too long to click it (which is... a bizarre "feature").

  • There are also Ludo and Parcheesi, which are effectively heavily modified variants of Backgammon for up to 4 players.

  • Does it hold your hand through only-legal-moves the way Board Game Arena does?

  • I tried so many other podcast apps, at least 3 of 4 others. The only thing I dislike is that about AntennaPod is that there is no comprehensive removal button that deletes, marks as played, and removes from queue—but all the other apps failed at even consistently downloading eps or playing them back. AntennaPod crushes all competition by light years.

  • And Hoopla Digital! They each have some things that the other one doesn't.

  • Another peak FLOSS.

Actually, Audacity lost this status when Muse Group bought it out. There was a huge community fuss over this especially in /r/Audacity when the company started adding data-tracking to it, and the protests eventually died down because they just kept muscling through their decision like Reddit did with its changes.

I still use Audacity, to be fair, but may consider Ardour that another user mentioned here...

  • Why would more people choose the version that is more expensive, but does not have more features?

It's chess.com. We are the tech-savvy Lemmy weirdos who dig around for alternatives. I'd put my money on people just literally not knowing or thinking to check for an alt.

  • They should branch out!! Does it support anything other than chess?

  • Dang, I wish I knew about Freeplane years ago. Thanks!! I'm also entrenched in Kdenlive but I wonder if Shotcut has a better UI...

  • some of my favourite audiobooks are from there.

    Go on...

    How is Matrix's screen-sharing quality?

A frequent activity that my closest friend group likes to do is spectate on single-player games played by one person via screen-sharing (and we're mostly introverted so no Twitch for us lol; plus, that's Amazon's playground anyway). This is where Discord unfortunately reigns supreme: its screen-sharing is somehow absolutely fantastic and near-flawless.

I recently learned that Matrix has screen-sharing through this Discord age-verification article, which may be enough to finally make the push for my friends to consider Matrix; how is it in comparison? Does anyone here very frequently use it?

Is there a categorical list of instances (showing, like, any instance for nutrition the way lemmy.zip is for gaming)?

I'm part of programming.dev and I feel like starting a /c/volumeeating (to mirror /r/volumeeating wouldn't really make sense there, haha.

Does anyone else intentionally have no ISP-provided Wi-Fi at home and instead ration mobile data for Internet access?

I've had no ISP-provided Internet access since Feb. 2023 or so and, while it's been a pain at times, I still haven't caved into returning to the evil monopoly that is Spectrum, so far, and probably won't for as long as I can't land a remote job. ArrowDL, while not perfect, has been pretty good at download management for the most part in conjunction with mobile data-hotspotting.

Holy crap, Summit's screenshot feature must be the most advanced such system I've ever seen

When it comes to screenshooting ("screenshotting?"), I've never seen any tool even as remotely as capable as Summit; I think Thunder had some sort of system that builds it, but Summit appears to actually calculate the screen coordinates of content that displays on your device.

I never actually thought to press the button until now when I just tried it out of curiosity. Unbelievable!

Can AHK apply a dynamic filename to a file it makes?

For example, can FileAppend() be set to create something like %COMPUTERNAME%test.txt? I have no idea of what the code for this would be like, if so.

Strikethrough isn't showing in the ribbon menu even though it's checked

Can anyone help me figure this out?

I thought it was totally absent, which is why I went to ToolsCustomize and looked for it, but once I found where it would normally be put, it was apparently already checked! Yet I don't see it... I have no idea of what to do.

And no, it's not in the drop-down arrow by the "U," which is only more customization of the underline.

How do you delete the tiny "L's" under the ruler in LO Writer?

I thought in other word processors you could simply right-click them and find a "delete" button, but there seems to be no such thing in LO Writer. Does anyone have any leads? Much appreciated!

That would be awesome, if so!

It's getting kind of annoying to keep seeing... and I don't know where else this should be posted or how to reach the instance's team, FWIW.

I just moved to TROM Search as my search engine, and wonder how long it'll last

It is fascinating that the search engine changes domains every single time you use it. While I'm big into privacy, I don't understand all these intricate details, but it seems cool and has yielded pinpoint results so far.

I just learned about the vast network of https://trom.tf/ through... hmm, I can't remember any more, haha! But it was either somewhere in the Lemmyverse or on Reddit, perhaps in a comment on a post in /r/privacy.

This TROM endeavor looks incredibly ambitious, so while FOSS is always welcome, I'm not sure about how long they'll be able to last running so many different projects. It feels like it's trying to be an immediate Google replacement and I fear that those who run it may be biting off more than they can chew... so I'm just trying the search engine for now.

How do you show full comment text in your inbox, not just the first line?

Is it possible? I wanna be able to read walls of text straight from there, Reddit-style, and not have to tap each single one to see the full thing. Old Reddit also has a one-touch context button that can display your original comment (if the inbox content is a child comment) right there without leaving the inbox.

Is there an app that can mimic multireddits?

I thrived on daily reading of a few multireddits, which are specific clusters of the same subreddits, as my default view; I only went to the general feed for all of my subscribed communities every once in a while.

    For example: https://old.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow+LifeProTips+dataisbeautiful

    Is this possible on Lemmy?
