  • Rod Liddle has always been a piece of shit and this is absolutely standard operating procedure for him.

Don't forget that he ditched his wife and their young children, on their honeymoon, to instead shack up with a younger woman, who he later assaulted while she was pregnant.

  • I once had a really long running bout of hiccups, like more than a day and it was really draining on me and I was very tired. I looked myself in the mirror and said "you don't have hiccups any more" and they stopped immediately.

Tried it again several times since and it never worked again but for that brief moment I was invincible.

  • They likely believe they're doing all this in God's name even though it is entirely against the actual teachings of Jesus.

He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

    Luke 14:12-14

  • They are, what has changed is the sentences you're likely to get for doing them (and causing an accident or being caught by the police).

Instead of points and/or a fine, you're likely to get a temporary driving ban instead.

Interestingly it seems they'll punish commercial vehicle drivers like this as well which could easily result in losing your job if it's required for work.

  • What this article is failing to mention is these new sentencing guidelines apply to people who have caused an accident through their careless driving.

I drive a commercial vehicle for work and while it would be a lie to say I've never been distracted behind the wheel (everyone is to varying degrees) but I see potentially serious accidents almost occur daily. From people cutting blind corners, driving in the middle of the road, phone in front of their face, phone glued to their ear, not looking or indicating at junctions and roundabouts.

Theres an epidemic of bad driving and we need more of this sort of low level punishment to make people think before they take that call or queue up a new song on Spotify.

  • Median house price in France is €160,000 and in the UK it's £297,000 ~ €350,000

Median salary in France is €23,280 and in the UK it's £37,400 ~ €43,000

A house in France costs, on average, 6.87 times the average annual salary and in the UK it costs 8.14 times.

Caveat: all these numbers come from 2 minutes of googling figures so I do not vouch for their accuracy. This also doesn't take into account the rental market or the availability of social housing just owner-occupier purchase price.

  • Cautionary Tales by Tim Harford.

Takes stories of errors, mistakes, catastrophes of the far and recent past and analyses the causes of them and what lessons can be learned. Everything from assigning success to personality over circumstance to the "curse of information" to what to do in a plane crash.

Interesting, insightful, exceptionally well written and presented, always interesting and entertaining.

  • If you're at all interested in numbers and statistics, and even if you're not but like hearing experts deconstruct the claims and lies made by politicians and business people, then I highly recommend More or Less also from the BBC.

  • Montserrat in the Caribbean. Visited multiple times as a kid after the volcano as I had family working there in regeneration projects. Beautiful place, beautiful people, wouldove to see it again as an adult and see how it's changed now.

We went on a highly illegal and potentially dangerous trip (if the volcano went off again, by the time we heard it, it would be too late to escape) to see the old airport from where you can see directly up the volcano and the path the pyroclastic flow took and covered the terminal building which was half buried in the dust.

There were wild horses roaming and nature was already starting to reclaim the place so the intervening 30 years probably have accelerated that and I'd love to see it.

  • With the recent lurch to the right in this country, Labour sees becoming the conservatives as the key to election success, hence this current government essentially becoming David Camerons government. The tories have become reform and most bizzarely of all, with the exception of immigration, reform have pivoted so far round as to essentially have the same policy platform as the green party as a way to differentiate themselves from Badenoch and the tories.

Cutting winter fuel and cutting welfare and increasing defence spending and now cutting foreign NHS staff are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new tory Labour policy.

  • You should play the Project64 GEPD project.

A customised emulator setup specifically to run Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark in 60fps, widescreen support, keyboard and mouse controls, support for HD texture packs.

IMHO it's the definitive way to experience these games on modern hardware. I've tried running both on my steam deck and the controls just don't translate well to a comfortable experience so prefer this.

  • Any dating app that was any good at its stated aim wouldn't be able to make enough money to survive.

By definition dating apps don't want you to meet a partner, they want you addicted to swiping and tapping and almost finding a partner. If you hook up a few times along the way then that's just a secondary benefit and keeps that carrot dangling in front of you.
