  • Sometimes being able to have discussions is a privilege. A lot of people just want to exist safely in a space without having to justify this or that. Blahaj seems to be such a space and there are other spaces for people to go if they do want debate and discussion

  • Honestly yeah, that was it for me. Seeing him get elected this time was really this feeling of "Oh, that's just how it is over there huh?".

The first time I could just believe your voting systems are messed up with the electoral college and all, and the massive push back that happened. Feelings were also optimistic coming off the Obama years.

But now that he's spent the last several years fully mask off, investigated up and down revealing all the crazy things we'd been hearing about him and his cronies were true, and he still gets elected? By majority vote too?? There's no excuses.

The US is actually just like that huh?

  • Not saying you ARE definitely neurodivergent, but difficulty with jokes and sarcasm to the extent you're describing is not neurotypical behavior. Basically, no, the behavior is not normal, it's atypical.

Regarding your longer comment, having rigid, unconventional, self-made rules is another behavior I see in a lot of the neurodivergent individuals I work with. Again, not saying you definitely are neurodivergent, but these are not neurotypical behaviors

  • Not exactly neurotypical behavior, particularly if it's all the time. Working with the neurodivergent community, difficulty sensing jokes and sarcasm is something I see a lot. Just worked with a child who was pretty distraught with all the April fools jokes going on with their peers and not being able to tell what's real or not

  • I legit had the same thought just yesterday. I'm typically very hard on myself about doing a good job with my work and meeting my own expectations, but seeing Hegseth et al. play down Signal-gate got me thinking, I have never in my life fucked-up that bad and these fuckers still have the confidence to say they're good at their jobs, and that makes me feel better.

  • There's still some toxicity around Buddhism at least. Living in SEA I now know several people who are really turned off by the practices and beliefs of their family's religion, Buddhism, from the way all troubles are explained away as karma to neurodiversity and Learning Differences being hidden because that would mean that person did something bad in their past life.

I used to think Buddhism specifically was the "good" religion that's more like philosophy, but spending more time with people who grew up deep in Buddhism has made me see there's really more to the community and it's beliefs and practices than I thought.

  • I agree with this advice of having someone take a look at your resume. Way back, I had an older friend of mine with experience managing CV's help me work on mine and even the base template of my cover letters. I've done a number of interviews, mostly unsuccessful though I'm happy with where I'm at now, and one consistent thing I've heard is that I have an impressive resume, and I'm forever thankful to my friend for helping me put it together.

I don't quite agree on customizing your CV for every submission, but I do do this for my cover letter/correspondence.

Also, yes, reaching out directly to places you want to work with has worked for me a couple of times. If there are hiring/networking events for your field, even online ones, I'd recommend that too. Best success I've had landing interviews is through these kind of events and I've only done online ones.

  • Oh NOOOO

  • I'm in South East Asia, seen them in different countries here, mostly in malls but even in my current apartment building. Feels very Cyberpunk even just walking by and hearing it.

  • Columbia University PhD student Ranjani Srinivasan calls accusations that she’s a ‘terrorist sympathizer’ absurd, telling CBC’s David Common that she feared for her safety after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials showed up at her door.

That's the entire text with a 7 minute video on the page.

Newsworthy and valuable info in this climate, but I can't be the only one who gets frustrated when a news site posts basically just a video and no actual article. Maybe just a personal gripe

  • I'm taking a sick day too. Except for the first time in nearly a decade, my current employer doesn't require a doctor's note for anything less than 3 days.

Honestly, most doctors just give you a note if you go in no matter what anyway, so I've always felt that it's more about your workplace tracking you than trying to make sure you're alright. The need for a doctor's note doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Sucky, relatable situation, you got my sympathy

How do you handle unpopped popcorn kernels at the movies?

If I'm not sharing, I just drop them back into the bucket/bag. If I'm sharing, I'll just eat them.

Recently though a bucket I was sharing had so many unpopped kernels I started worrying for my gut. Had me wondering how everyone else handles this.

So how does everyone handle unpopped kernels?

I can't stop laughing but I also have no friends who read Stormlight to share this with 😭

What game do you play to just chill?

Nowadays I find a lot of games feel like too much work and/or anxiety when I just want to relax for like, 30 minutes to an hour after a long day. On the other hand, the games specifically designed to help you unwind just feel boring imo.

In the past I've felt like Outer Wilds scratched this itch, cause the whole experience was engaging but generally relaxed. There was a mystery that kept me hooked and the exploration and movement was fun in and of itself. I also felt like Subnautica filled this role since it was very much at my own pace, with anxiety producing portions which could for the most part be avoided or minimized, and also there was a clear objective to fulfill, get off the planet.

So what games do you play when you just wanna relax?

Good Linux note taking app with stylus support for hand writing?

Complete Linux noob so apologies if anything I say or ask about sounds dumb.

I want to start making the switch to Linux and I've got most things figured out I think. I plan on putting either Mint or Fedora on my old Surface Go gen 1 because it's not critical for my work and potentially losing some functionality there won't cause huge issues, but my main use of it right now is taking notes on Onenote that I can then view and edit from my other devices as well.

Looking into Onenote and alternatives on Linux, I keep running into comments about the lack of handwriting support or no straightforward answers about stylus support. Anything Lemmy recommends I try? Also, any advice on running Linux on the Surface Go in general is welcome. Found some resources already but doesn't seem like people do this often.
