White House Officials Say They Sent Harvard April 11 Demands in Error, New York Times Reports | News

The White House had not intended to send its revised — and more aggressive — set of demands to Harvard on April 11, according to a report by the New York Times published Friday evening.

Trump administration officials claimed that the demands — which were seen as excessive and illegal to Harvard’s administrators — should not have been sent and were “unauthorized,” according to the Times, which cited two unnamed sources.

The April 11 letter was signed by Josh Gruenbaum, the commissioner of the General Services Administration, Sean R. Kevney, the acting general counsel of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and Thomas E. Wheeler, the acting general counsel of the U.S. Department of Education.

A Harvard spokesperson slammed the government’s response as “breathtakingly intrusive” in a statement to The Crimson.

The alleged gunman who killed two people when he opened fire on Florida State University’s campus Thursday was identified as the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy who allegedly promoted “white supremacist” views, according to officials and a report.

User utilizes ChatGPT for therapy. It doesn't go very well.

This is both upsetting and sad.

What's sad is that I spend about $200/month on professional therapy, which is on the low end. Not everyone has those resources. So I understand where they're coming from.

What's upsetting is that this user TRUSTED ChatGPT to follow through on the advice without critically challenging it.

Even more upsetting is this user admitted to their mistake. I guarantee you that there are thousands like OP who wasn't brave enough to admit it, and are probably to this day, still using ChatGPT as a support system.

Entire Pentagon defense tech unit to leave by May

The entire staff of the Defense Digital Service (DDS), the Pentagon’s decade-old technology development office, is leaving by the start of May, with nearly all individuals resigning, a current member of the office confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday.

The mass exodus, first reported by Politico, means the service will effectively shutter in less than a month.

As AOC and Sanders Draw Crowds, 72% of Democrats Want Party to Abandon Centrist Approach to Trump

The two progressive lawmakers have addressed massive crowds in solidly red states including Idaho and Utah in recent days, as party of the national Fighting Oligarchy Tour.

A survey taken by Harvard's Center for American Political Studies and Harris between April 9-10 found that 72% of Democratic voters supported politicians like Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), "who are calling on Democrats to adopt a more aggressive stance towards Trump and his administration and 'fight harder'," rather than leaders who are willing to "compromise" with President Donald Trump.

Seeing that Tesla got hit with the death cross might provide a little thrill in a Tim Walz laughing at Tesla’s declining stock price kinda way. But I have to be honest, as someone who is not fully immersed in the financial markets, the chart pattern reading kinda strikes me as astrology for guys in suits. Like, because the line displays a pendant shape, that means it’s primed to break out? What does that even mean? You might as well say it’s a good time to buy because Mercury is in retrograde.

Anyway, analysts apparently don’t think death crosses are as reliable of an indicator as they are sometimes described by chart readers. According to Reuters, about half the time that a death cross appears, it marks the worst point for the index rather than a harbinger of a steeper decline. Regardless, it’s probably fine to taunt Tesla-maxxers with this news if you want an easy laugh.

Microsoft starts final Windows Recall testing before rollout

Microsoft is gradually rolling out the AI-powered Windows Recall feature to Insiders in the Release Preview channel before making it generally available to all Windows users with Copilot+ PCs.

Recall is an opt-in Windows feature that screenshots active windows every few seconds, analyzes them, and allows Windows 11 users to search text within the snapshots using natural language.

As the Windows Insider Program Team said on Thursday, Recall can be paused whenever needed and will only allow access to the data it captures after authenticating via Windows Hello.

I am currently winding down the Mastodon bots I used to post sunrise and sunset times. The precipitating event is that the admin of the instance hosting the associated accounts demanded they be made nigh-undiscoverable, but the underlying cause is that it’s become increasing clear that Mastodon isn’t, and won’t ever be, a good platform for “asynchronous ephemeral notifications of any kind”. I’d also argue (more controversially) that it’s simply not good infrastructure for social networking of any kind. There are lots of interesting people using Mastodon, and I’m sure it will live on as a good-enough space for certain niche groups. But there is no question that it will never offer the fun of early Twitter, let alone the vibrancy of Twitter during its growth phase. I’ve long since dropped Mastodon from my home screen, and have switched to Bluesky for text-centric social media

The sheriff's department issued a search warrant and say they found material on the teen's phone related to "The Order of Nine Angles," which is "a network of individuals holding new-Nazi racially motivated extremist views," according to investigators.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reviewed documents allegedly written by the teen, which calls for the assassination of Trump and the start of a revolution to "save the white race," according to federal court documents.

If millions of dead people are stealing from Social Security, then why can’t the DOJ find any of them?

It is the same question that all Americans should be asking: If Social Security is “rife with fraud,” where is the verification in the form of indictments, arrests, trials and justice that pursues those guilty of fraud?

  • A decade ago, my friend went on a tinder date with a guy who said he worked in "protection services". After the third date, he admitted that he's actually a cop, which she was on the fence about. He begged her to stay.

Then after three months of dating, she broke up with him, deleted her social media, lived with her parents a few states away, and cut off all contact with everyone who known her.

Only about a year ago did she finally reconnect with her social group.

So yeah, that gut check is important.

  • I know this guy who is absolutely ridiculous about this.

On one hand, he can't stand women's groups, gets upset about women's sports, can't stop dismissing anything that isn't solely masculine like yoga, dance, and even rages on women artists and musicians.

On the other hand, has BEGGED OUT LOUD to people (I'm not even his friend) to get him connected with "chicks".

I have no idea how to tell this guy he's a miserable hateful fuck who will die alone because of his own personality.

The National Counterintelligence and Security Center warned on Tuesday that China’s intelligence services were using deceptive efforts to recruit current and former U.S. government employees.

The center, along with the F.B.I. and the Pentagon’s counterintelligence service, said in an advisory that foreign intelligence agencies were posing as consulting firms, corporate think tanks and other organizations to recruit former U.S. officials.

The American government has long said that China uses social networks to secretly recruit people. But former U.S. officials say China now sees an opportunity as the Trump administration shuts down agencies, fires probationary employees and pushes out people who had worked on diversity issues.

  • Let’s be real: we would rather make our products in the USA. Doing business in China is hard: a different language, a different culture, a different legal system, and a very long and expensive plane flight every time you have to pop over to help fix what’s gone wrong. So why don't we make keyboards in the USA instead—and why don’t the vast majority of consumer electronics manufacturers, be they big or indie?

Most of our electrical components are made in China. Sometimes we’ll use or consider components not made in China—and they’re made in Japan, Taiwan, or Germany. The USA doesn’t make the components we need.

Making keyboards is intrinsically a cross-border activity. (For us, some of that activity involves shipping American goods to China! We make a number of products that use American wood. Unfortunately, China has just announced they will now tax that lumber at 34% in a retaliatory tariff.)

We’re a small company making niche products; we don’t have the volume to justify opening our own factory. We definitely don’t have the capital to do it. We rely on contract manufacturing, where we pay a network of factories to make products to our specifications, without us owning the machinery or hiring the workers ourselves.

Southern China, Guangdong and Shenzhen in particular, have developed an ecosystem of factories and suppliers within a small radius. Within about thirty miles, we work with a bunch of factories who are specialized in doing low volume production runs. Having so many companies close together saves a lot on transportation and freight. More importantly, it allows for local competition and sharing of knowledge—just like greater Los Angeles is the best place to make TV and movies even though other cities offer incentives, Guangdong is the best place to make consumer electronics.

    The effects of the tariffs.

A juice company dumped orange peels in a national park. This is what it looks like today

...one thousand trucks poured into the national park, offloading over 12,000 metric tons of sticky, mealy, orange compost onto the worn-out plot. The site was left untouched and largely unexamined for over a decade. A sign was placed to ensure future researchers could locate and study it.

16 years later, Janzen dispatched graduate student Timothy Treuer to look for the site where the food waste was dumped.

Treuer initially set out to locate the large placard that marked the plot — and failed.
