  • You don't need a Microsoft account, or any other remotely managed account, just to login to your machine.

You wouldn't be supporting AI-driven decision making in which Palestinian child needs to die next.

You won't have AI shoved into places it doesn't belong like a simple text editor.

  • A public defender who's overworked and probably not even that good effective at his job. You must have a weak case to be concerned about a free lawyer.

Edit: Calling public defenders "not good" is a bit low but they are overworked and under-supported, therefore I rephrased to say they're ineffective.

  • The one where they have to prove Data is sentient or else he'll get dismantled by Starfleet. Seems kind of apropos now with governments deciding, on a whim, who gets rights and also how hard we're trying to make AGI happen.

  • This trend of non-coverage will probably continue if we don't think of something different. I for one rarely go to my downtown area so it could be easy for regular people at least to miss what's happened.

It's a little more on the dangerous side but I had an idea of a "stop in" rather than a "sit in". Basically we pick a day and time and no matter where you are, you just come to a stop for one minute, not speaking or making noise, just being still. It's something people can do anywhere and only takes a minute of your time, but if enough people do it then it would look kind of crazy, like something from a sci-fi movie. There's like no way this would go uncovered or at least unGoogled.

Don't give up if an OS doesn't work out for you!

At the risk of jinxing myself I just wanted to share how happy I am with my latest installation.

For over a year my Dell XPS has run Ubuntu. It's been, by far, the worst experience I've ever had with any computer and my very first computer had only 256 MB of RAM! Among the long list of issues I've had we're freezing, unresponsive keyboard and touchpad, glitchy video, multicolor flashing screens, piss poor battery life, piss poor Wi-Fi stability, failure to properly suspend or hibernate, and battery levels suddenly going from 40% to 5%. I figured either Dell put some kind of poison pill into there laptop so you'd spring for one of their Linux preinstalled laptops or I just got a lemon (I did have to get the mobo replaced within a month of buying it).

I've been in the process of getting all of my personal files off of it and getting ready to reinstall Windows and sell it, but I figured it was worth one last shot with a new installation. My desktop has been running Bazzite and I've bee

Any existing Linux solutions for tracking energy/cpu usage (trend, not snapshot)?

Unless I'm using the wrong terms in my search it really seems like there's no tool for Linux that can tell me what processes used the most CPU (typically this has a high correlation with energy usage) in the last hour or 24 hours.

Basically I want something like the Android battery usage app but for Linux.

Looking for a good and reliable TTS app

It seems kind of insane how hard it's been to find a good TTS app. I have TTS Util and that's worked sporadically but if I get it to start it will stop in the middle of reading. I can't even seem to find a basic app to let me paste in text and have it read.

Any recommendations? I'm mostly trying to have web articles read aloud and I don't care about robotic voices that much.

Do I really need one account per service?

I thought one of the advantages of the Fediverse was to have one account but access to many services. Is this possible just not common? I already have a Lemmy account and Mastodon and I didn't want to start making more just to try out the other services.

    Federated Shopping Platform

One of the biggest benefits of Amazon IMO is it's homogeny. That is, It's ability to let you buy products from dozens of different categories, among thousands of vendors, with a unified shopping experience. For any competitor to replicate this would be a monumental task and it would probably take years to see profit. I think most of us want to see decentralization of retail and increased competition and the best way might be a decentralized shopping platform.

While not something that can easily be shoehorned into the Fediverse I think it's worth the effort to try. Sensitive info like addresses, order history, and payments would still have to be managed outside of the Fediverse, but I think it is feasible to have a federated platform that makes it easier to connect consumers with retailers.

Nvidia Sunshiners (game streaming), how are you getting it to work?

I guess the other post was removed so I couldn't continue the convo there. A few people said Sunshine worked great for them with their Nvidia cards and I've actually lost sleep over my issues.

I'm running Bazzite on a fairly new custom build with a RTX 2060S. Someone else said they used a RTX 40 series GPU so maybe my hardware is just too old. Still everything worked great in Windows (same machine) including streaming. I'm willing to try another OS but I don't know if I can deal with another new GPU because it'd be my 3rd and I hate the hassle of selling stuff online.

A key thing I've seen is that the vainfo command reports no encoding capabilities at all. I've never seen any other reports online where someone showed an Nvidia card that could encode according to vainfo. I can absolutely encode using ffmpeg though which is why I'm even more frustrated.

Can you give 3 likes and 3 dislikes for your opposition Presidential candidate and your supporting candidate?

Hoping this can be a way to make people think more critically about their choice for US President, maybe even bring opposing sides together to fix the problems we ALL face.

So if you support Trump try to list 3 things you dislike about him and 3 things you like about Harris. Please keep answers serious. Plenty of other places on Lemmy for you to post snappy putdowns.

    Did something happen to fishing?

Tasker unable to toggle Wi-Fi (workarounds?)

First, I know it's an API thing and not a Tasker issue. However, this sucks balls. I don't use Tasker often because I have battery life issues but I'll be damned if I go to use it and find that Google fucked it up.

Can I get this function back if I root my phone or run an alternate OS like Graphene? I'm edging ever closer to have a fully customized and controlled device for personal use and a standard, locked-down device for work.

    Is WattOS open source?

I'm incredibly close to pulling the trigger to make WattOS my new distro for my netbook. I've been using antiX for a while and it's really great overall but the lack of systemd has worn me down I feel. A few programs I want to use just don't work properly without systemd and I don't have the patience to fill in the gaps myself.

My only real concern with WattOS is the fact it seems so mysterious. There's very little info on their site and NO LICENSE OR SOURCE CODE OR REPOSITORY! I highly doubt Russia or China are trying to weasel their way into old AF computers to create a botnet but I've never seen a Linux project be so secretive.

Anyone else have some light to shed on this project?

Need help to find OSTree-like project

Couldn't find the project in my browser history or Lemmy saves. I'm pretty sure it was Lemmy though that led me to find a GitHub project similar to OSTree. It sounded like it was maintained by one person and it hasn't been updated in a long time because the author thought it was "done" and they used it frequently.

It was a tool that let them basically create images that could be booted from and it was easy to layer software on top of a base image and I think there were config files similar to Containerfiles but didn't look the same. Don't think it be was "goldboot" either but that might be a little closer to what the project does. I don't think it was something Fedora specific either like bootc.

Update: Found it! It was in the history of a laptop I rarely use (of course). The project is https://github.com/godarch/darch and it does appear to be those things I said: layered, docker-like, bare metal, and OS agnostic.

Endless loop when attempting login to GitLab

I just pulled down the latest Firefox Dev Edition AppImage and still getting the same result. I try to login to GitLab and I get an endless loop of checking whether I'm human or not. I tried to turn off tracking protection for GitLab and Cloudflare and added both to accept all cookies. In the network tab it eventually shows 403s. Anyone else have this happen or know if I can disable any more safety/privacy features to get it working?

    How is Minecraft Dungeons?

Been waiting for it to go on sale and figured my son might like it since he plays Minecraft a lot. Wondering if I gotta watch out for in-game purchases though (can I require password for purchases?) and online interactions (def don't want him chatting with others). It is seems pretty hack and slash but if a lot of reading is involved maybe he's too young for it (6 ½).

Edit: Sorry, meant to say Dungeons, not Legends.

    Rolling my own immutable distro

I've looked at a lot of other immutable distros and I might just end up using one of those, but I feel like taking on a bit of a challenge and there's a few things I'm not very keen on with existing solutions (last paragraph is my idea if you want to skip the context).

Most immutable systems I've seen require a reboot in order to apply system changes. What is this, Windows? Yeah, reboots are quick but restoring my windows and getting back into my groove is not quick. Also, every immutable OS I've seen wants you to opt-in to a rollback. Rarely do I see the full effects of installing a package or altering a config immediately. By the time I notice an issue maybe it's too late to rollback to before the change or maybe I've done a few other things since and I don't want to rollback everything. I would much prefer to make "rolling forward" or persisting changes to be a very conscious process.

I started messing with BTRFS and I think I've come up with a process that will get me what I wan

    Image composition node/library/checkpoint

This stuff moves so fast I really can't keep up and a lot of the research posted here goes a bit over my head. I'm looking for something that doesn't seem too out of the question given things like CLIPSeg. Is there some tool or library out there that will accept an image and a prompt and then generate a mask within the image that generally corresponds to the prompt?

For example, if I had a picture of an empty park and gave the prompt "little girl flying a kite" I should get back a mask vaguely in the shape of a child with a sort of blob mask in the sky for the kite. Of course from there I could use the mask to inpaint those things. I would really like to be able to layer an image kind of like Photoshop so it's not all-or-nothing and focus on one element at a time. I could do the masking manually but of course we all want fewer steps in our workflows.

What's something you wish would "come back" but you feel like you're the only one that cares?

    Couple of things for me.

One is tiny croutons. I don't see them anywhere anymore. They taste the same but it's kind of a pain sometimes to keep the big ones on your fork. The small ones were a little more satisfying to snack on too.

Second is Blue Nehi. Never met anyone else that's tried or heard of it. Damn it was good though. Big Blue is kinda similar but those always taste under carbonated.

Am I using devDependencies wrong or is everyone bad at explaining it?

    Official docs say it's for

Packages that are only needed for local development and testing.

Umm, okay. Not 100% clear there. Some articles mention things like ESLint or Jest (k, I'm onboard there) but others mention Babel or WebPack. I get that you don't need WebPack libraries to be loaded in the browser but how the hell do you bundle up your code without it? When you use npm ci or npm install you'll get all dependencies but isn't it good practice (in a CICD environment) to use --omit=dev or --only=prod?

Is n-to-n sharing a bad idea?

What I mean by n-to-n sharing is that I have all of my devices sharing the same folder with every other device. This has definitely been a bit of a pain to set up and manage (moreso because a few machines use Docker so they're basically double-NAT'd). My biggest concern is having conflicts out the wazoo and losing data. The most important thing to me is my KeePass vault.
