  • I'm less and less convinced there is one. Sure, there was one. There were actually many! Libertarian think tanks have been brainstorming ways to cut the federal government down to the military for decades, the theocrats have been working on their Dominion theory, the war hawks have been planning their wars against Iran and China, but the people calling the shots have no idea what they're doing. They're just acting out the most dumbed-down versions of those factions' propaganda because that's where their comprehension meets its limits. The entire edifice is becoming increasingly unmoored from reality and they're all busy acting out their fever dreams in real life. It's pure nihilism; destroy for destruction's sake. And it'll continue until it hits a resource constraint; until there's a crisis because the ports are empty or the market finally crashes because the smart money's done ripping the copper out of the walls and needs foreign safe havens to escape to, or someone's itchy trigger finger starts a conflict that the country cannot win, and that's when gravity'll kick back in and everyone will feel the empty air beneath their feet and the scrambling will start.

  • It's a cetacean micturation week, huh?

  • And so you're going to reduce the military budget and start approaching diplomacy with an eye for mutual benefit and international cooperation, right?

They're going after the damn seabed

Some US-based companies have long been flirting with the possibility of extracting metallic nodules from the deep sea in order to fill the gap in rare earths. The nodules form when metals precipitate out of cold ocean water and have high-purity concentrations of valuable minerals. They grow extremely slowly, at an estimated rate of a few millimeters every million years. Their role in ocean ecology is poorly understood, but they're thought to provide habitats for the animals that live there, playing an indirect role in carbon sequestration in marine sediment.

Up until now, the fact that they're two to four miles below the surface and in international waters has kept them safe, but Trump is now rumored to be drafting an executive order to encourage their extraction and stockpiling.

There is no environmentally friendly way to extract the nodules; it

Growing Culinary Mushrooms with Cat Litter: A Guide

Have you wanted to grow mushrooms but didn't know where to start? Here's a relatively easy and foolproof technique that doesn't require equipment or sterilization and can be done in an afternoon.

    MATERIALS:
Mushroom spawn - the two types that work well for this are oyster mushrooms (any variety, although given that oyster mushrooms tend to be copious spore producers and the spores are known for causing health problems, sporeless oysters are best for indoors/small spaces) and what's known as bear'a head or lion's mane. The latter produced a shaggy ball-shaped mushroom and is enjoying a moment right now because it helps keep nerves healthy. It's also darn tasty and can be enjoyed in stir fries and sushi (if cooked!). Pioppino might also do well in this setup, but I have never tried it. Mushroom spawn can be purchased online. I like Field & Forest Products as a supplier.
