  • I think Godot will not win simply because Unreal is so much better for 3D games what most comercial games use. I think Godot will become the indie favourite for 2D. Where it goes from there I'm not sure. Is the revenue sharing not enough to carry the game engine? Unreal/Epic is a special case. But is Unity mismanaged so hard? It still has huge market share.

  • The thing is this is purely cultural conditioning. And every nation has to ask itself what it is willing to sacrifice. In European countries e.g. people sacrifice a few (read 10-20) unlucky victims amongst millions to people that are "too far gone" and exploit the rehabilitation system by being repeat offenders. The US sacrifices extremely large parts of their relative population (over 1 million prisoners) and minorities on very flimsy accounts and puts them away for good, sometimes with no reason. All to prevent repeat offenders and keep them locked away.

So you gotta ask yourself are you willing to completely ruin the lives of a million people (and have probably a greater death toll than a few dozen from that) and not have to trust anybody or are you willing to sacrifice a few innocent people on the grounds of failing to rehabilitate rare "uncurable villain" criminals?

  • Those markets can't run on the rich alone. And yeah it will make rural poor people poorer. That's actually also the goal. Urban sprawl should be stopped. Why do people need to build houses and villages out in bumfuck nowhere and then complain when amenities and authorties are shitty out there? These people should imo be forced to make a hard decision because if they can't afford gas anymore they will move closer to a city since the move is more affordable than paying for gas. Hence prevention of sprawl and reducing of gas use. The only people that can stay are the ones that a) are rich and b) require it for their work (e.g. farmers) or c) ones that can work locally without driving around.

  • I believe working 2-3 days a week would actually be enough and with the right organization method would allow even crucial 24/7 positions to be manned (like nursing and care staff). Plus you'd basically never be understaffed because you'd have lots of backups.

8 hours a month sounds a bit too utopian to me.

  • What needs to happen first is fuel price needs to be so high that people are incentivized to

    a) switch to public transit no matter how shitty it is because they just can't afford a car anymore
    b) start public transit companies because there is money to be made and the oil lobbies don't have enough money anymore to lobby effectively

My guess is before 2050 nobody will really get anything done because the oil lobby is just too powerful. Would be great though.

  • It sucks in the way you understand and know because nothing else even exists. No one is interested in having to cater to their walled garden unless there's money to be made. Meanwhile both Linux and Windows have many open source projects and hobbyists working on things. So you might get a mac driver for something you buy but most of the time macos is an afterthought at best in many hobby projects. Also lol mac gaming is a joke. Even Linux is getting better support now than macos in that regard since the Steamdeck.

  • Haha the only thing a quantum channel does is verifying if a message has been altered (looking at a message alters it).
Actual encryption that prevents the Shor algorithm from having a linear running time have been around for quite some time now and can be easily run on normal machines. NIST is just taking its sweet time to decide on one.

  • It's actually not bad as a currency. It's just bad because everyone and their mother rely on mining and pyramid get-rich-quick schemes and about 99.9% of finance bros don't have a single fucking idea how a blockchain actually works.

  • Wym not photo editing? You can do everything aswell in Krita. Changing hues, retouching, selection, layers, saturation, tone balance. All there.
And you can most definitely use it for pixel art. Even if you don't want to use Krita there exist paint.net, aseprite, piskel or pixelorama. No need for hundreds of dollars for PS.

  • Honestly ever si ce I discovered Krita I never went back to GIMP. Maybe gimp is more customizable at the base level but fuck me if Krita doesn't make transitioning out of Photoshop a breeze. Changing from PS to Krita is like switching from a metal baseball bat to a wooden one. Switching from PS to Gimp is like switching out your metal baseball bat for an unfelled pine tree.

Can someone tell me how picturedent works?

There's a ton of pictures on there but it seems like there's just a wall, no possibility of registering or upload so I'm wondering how 2 million pictures came on there. This can't all be done manually by a single guy. How are pics getting on there?

What is the rate limit for requests on the webrequests for search and API for lemmy.world?

I would like to try building a search index for this instance (maybe others) and as such would like to crawl the site with automated spiders. Now with the shutdown of the reddit API I expect the site to come under quite substantially load and also I would ofc try to not spam the site with too many requests as to not get banned or blocked, due to looking like a DOS attack. Could anyone provide some information on this?
