Like if your vegan anarchist grandma and vegan anarchist dad were the same person.

I am an engineer (closer to toot toot then clicky clacky) cosplaying as a farmer in unceded aninstanabe territory in eastern ontario.

Pronouns: she/they

Maybe the real vegan theory club were the friends we made along the way ✨

  • I have today off work so I'm smoking weed and tackling this math problem that's been vexxing me for like a year. Haven't had time to give it any brain power.

...I may have technically assigned it to a report as a learning exercise and told her I expect this will take her a year or more to solve so no rush. I regret giving away such a delicious puzzle so I'm going to try and solve it and then try and keep it secret forever so I don't take this opportunity from her 🙃

  • Sorry for the serious comment (which is not a reply to OP but something I want to share with my fellow audience).

I think there are 3 distinct cases where someone says something and I think, "hey, that's not fair/true/etc" and feel myself getting defensive. Each case has an appropriate response, in my opinion:

    1. They are not talking about me as an individual, but making sweeping statements - the person isn't talking to me or about me as an individual, no one is asking for my response or thoughts so I can just move on with my life. Maybe the sweeping statement helps me understand my role in systemic oppression (like by simply being north american) and I can reflect on that, but typically it's more of an awareness/learning thing and not actionable until I learn/reflect more.

    2. Same as 1 but + I am not the intended audience - not everything is about me or for me. The intended audience probably has some context I am missing and even if they don't no one cares what my take is, so again just let it go.

    3. If they are speaking about me in particular they are a) either right and I'm reacting with guilt or shame, b) having some misunderstanding and we need to come together to solve the conflict or c) someone I have no relationship/community/duty to and no benefit comes from trying to resolve so I can also just let it go.

  • Best times of my life were spent literally just vibing by myself or in parallel with my sweetheart

  • Specisism is a hell of a drug

  • Like, have these people ever met (edit: non-human) animals???

  • The light pollution really adds to it lol. The area behind the wall had coyote calls coming from it. Very spooky.

  • All sandwiches are beautiful and all cops are bastards

  • I have learned to disconnect from wifi if I want to take photos to check out the goods and not have them end up in partner sharing lmao

  • It's funny because it's true

  • I sometimes feel like the left, which I count myself to, is just as populilistic as the far right.

Naw fam, you just disagree. If you accept that people are going to have different opinions and priorities and focus on working towards common goals you don't need to worry about how 'divided' the left is. It can look like not commenting on memes telling people they are doing leftism wrong 😘

  • Landback

  • I'm sure a lot of it has to do with not being "from here" and having only lived in one city (although in many different neighborhoods). I think that's making me expect my experiences as normal where they might not be. I'm also probably doing a lot of projecting based on not knowing Ottawa that well.

But to actually answer your question I do think a lot of it has to do with people retreating to the suburbs at night. I'm used to seeing parks full of people sitting around and enjoying the weather when it's warm and sunny. I haven't seen that here.

I love the National gallery! I'm missing art events! I used to go to the AGO after work all the time (I was a member) including First Thursdays and the ROM for ROM After Dark when I could get tickets, lol. I probably wouldn't go as often because as you mentioned, the transit in Ottawa sucks. I've been to Saw Gallery a few times and it was great, but very empty of other patrons.

I've got to a few VegOttawa events but there were very few vegans and also a lot of cops??? I went a Criminalization and Punishment Education Program event and that was cool - but I felt weird going to a university event. I probably need to get over myself.

Where do all the (old) weirdos hang out???

  • I understand this reference

  • Ottawa is such a confusing place. I do work there sometimes and it's so...hollow? I know 'goverment towns' exist, especially capital cities but they usually have more idk, flair?

(Ottawa folks please tell me I'm wrong and tell me something cool about your city it's the closest city to me now and I'm desperate for something to like about it)

  • idk bud, pulling out my unamused face is a cornerstone of my humour. Being old helps because it's an "oh shit" moment rather than a "lol you are cute when you are mad" moment.

When I was in Uni we got a cake made that said "just write [message] on it, and don't mess it up" and took a photo of the student society president (who ordered the cake) frowning at it. Comedy!

  • Thank you!

  • Are the tankies in the room with us right now?

  • I actually lol'd and then kind of gagged mid lol? I thought you should know. 💚
