  • I'm not seeing that option anywhere. Nor does it allow me to change the "weight". I found a github discussion saying it should show up after you save the settings, but I tried that on two instances and didn't get any unique URL.

Ah, I found it under the "cookies" tab. Needs to be more obvious IMO.

  • I checked it out, but most of the public instances I looked at use google + bing. I think I only came across one that used Mojeek, but they deranked it so google results were still at the top.

Yeah you can customize them -- if you never clear your cookies.

Pretty much need to self-host it to customize it.

  • we can get random experts chiming in about interesting topics in an organic way

    1. In my experience, many of the people claiming to be experts on reddit are spreading misinformation. This goes for Twitter too, and probably most other large social media sites. People love to be seen as an authority on a topic.
    2. Reddit is anything but organic, and is getting worse and worse in this regard.
  • The links just need to have a “no follow” attribute (which is something that Lemmy could add, if they haven’t already).

Sounds like a good suggestion to make on github. I don't know how easy it would be to do that for only reddit links, and I'm not sure how the devs would feel about that.

    Also, from your link:

The correlation for the number of “dofollow” backlinks is a little bit weaker than that of the total number of backlinks.

Here’s what Tim said about this:

This could be an indication that Google values some nofollowed links from strong pages more than followed links from weak pages. #whoknows Tim Soulo Tim Soulo, CMO Ahrefs

Take this finding with a large pinch of salt. The primary aim of this study was not to analyze the impact of nofollowed vs. followed links and as such, we didn’t make any effort to isolate this factor.

But even if we assume that nofollowed links have no direct impact on SEO, they can still have an indirect impact because: They help diversify your link profile

    Natural backlink profiles are diverse.

  • SEO ranking is relative. IE: if reddit and lemmy have the same post title, the reddit one will show up higher since it has a higher domain authority.

I think this is also the main reason why youtube videos show up as top search results instead of the same video on youtube-alternative sites.

I think your previous question was clearer, so I'll just link to it: https://sh.itjust.works/post/25867272/14197383

    My response:

I’m no SEO expert, but search engines penalize websites for gaming the system. I’ve already read someone suggest that Google is not sure what to do with the fediverse because it already looks like spam, and that may be why it doesn’t show up often in search results. That’s beyond my knowledge though.

If you don't like reddit, stop linking directly to it. Doing so makes them show up at the top of search results.

You should use archive.org or archive.today links.

The best way to influence the Domain Authority metric is to improve your site’s overall SEO health, with a particular focus on the quality and quantity of external links pointing to your site.

You can use the Wayback machine addon to easily get archived links https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wayback-machine_new/.

    And a bookmarklet for archive.today:

     undefined

    javascript:void(open('https://archive.today/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(document.location)))

FYI, if you’re worried about archive.today going down and references being lost, you can manually leave in the original URL by adding https://archive.ph/o/ in front of any URL, after you archive it. IE: https://archive.ph/o/https://sh.itjust.works/post/26060585 will redirect to the archived page,

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.

I did a search from shitjustworks for "reddit die" and did not find https://lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made https://sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a "ping" sent out to notify all other federated instances.

And from what I know, if I post to !sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie only users on sh.itjust.works will see the posts until other people from other instances randomly come across it somehow and subscribe? This really needs to be improved.

I saw some weird pro-reddit content on other reddit-themed communities and then !snoocalypse@lemmy.ml went into archive mode, so I decided to make this to keep it clean from any reddit shills lurking in the dark. I'll start by posting some historical content.

By the way, anyone know what might be the most anti-reddit lemmy instance? I'd hate to find out that shitjustworks likes reddit and doesn't want a "watch reddit die" community on their instance.

Reddit is so untrustworthy. r/modcoord thread purges all pro-fediverse comments, then r/redditalternatives removes the thread exposing it.

Help encourage more reddit subs to move to Lemmy! Message the moderators of the subs you'd like to see on Lemmy. Here's an example script.

    Moving to the fediverse

Hi guys, are you familiar with the fediverse? It's an open-source reddit-alternative that is owned and run by no one. So it doesn't suffer from the threat of a single hostile entity making drastic, unwanted changes, as we recently saw with reddit, resulting in the side-wide protests.

It would be great to have your subreddit join the fediverse! If you do, I would suggest not using lemmy.world, as it's already the largest instance and it's better to spread things out so no one has too much control.

Why isn't anyone farting in school?

I was homeschooled previously with a small group of other children and we fart in class all the time.

Now I'm in public school for high school and no one is farting. I was very sheltered and public school is like a whole new world for me, so I don't know what the norms are. I've been holding it in but my stomach hurts and it leaks out anyway.

I don't understand how there are so many more people in high school and yet zero farts...
