  • Let's just say there's a reason we moved to the place where defederation is an option...

  • After all, any instance can pickup some of those and isn’t representative of the instance as a whole.

I think I speak for the whole admin team that we actually do hold instance owners responsible for the communities they host, the same way we hold Reddit (the company) responsible for the communities they choose to host. That said, we made the decision that (for now) the best practice for handling large general purpose instances like .world or .ml is to take a scalpel approach until such a time comes that the Threadiverse is more resilient.

While ostensibly a "general purpose" instance, users on Hexbear had a tendency to come to our hosted communities and aggressively push propaganda, unfairly burdening our mods, so it was a much easier decision to de-federate. We actually did announce that one because of their size.

(Also FYI in case you're not aware you are posting form lemmy.world so just to be clear none of these policies apply to your current account!)

EDIT: I also think it might be useful to highlight that we never take actions against other instances, we take actions for our users/communities.

What to expect with an account on StarTrek.website

We've seen an increase in sign-ups on our instance lately, so the admin team felt it might be helpful to know what to expect from StarTrek.website as your home base in the Fediverse.

To give an idea of how we view this instance, the original URL we were considering was "startek.club". Our goal was never to be a "fan site" explicitly, but to feel like a social club for Trekkies and entry point to the "Threadiverse".

What you can expect form us:

Active, aggressive moderation from our administrators and mods.

The admin team has decades of experience moderating on Reddit and we all have very low tolerance for inauthentic or aggressive behavior. If you feel that way too, you'll probably like it here. But if you're seeking raw, unfiltered Fediverse access, this isn't the instance for you.

**The admin team actively defederates other instances, removes federated communities, and bans federated users for behavior that does not align with our [core principles](https://wiki.s

  • How much effort would it be for them to create a new one and do it again?

Minimal, but it is the domain that gets blocked so the attacker would still need to purchase a new domain.

  • Would you like the admins to permaban them?

  • Oh, my bad! Also congratulations.

  • One of our Admins still moderates their Reddit community, but we are also in regular contact with the other mods who chose to stay behind.

StarTrek.website has been updated to Lemmy 0.19.10

Please let the admin team know if you notice any weirdness. See changes here: https://join-lemmy.org/news/2025-03-19_-_Lemmy_Release_v0.19.10_and_Developer_AMA

    • Fix Youtube thumbnails by increasing the metadata fetch limit to 1 MB #5266
    • Also remove private messages when banning user with “remove content” (goodbye Nicole) #5414
    • Ignore accept-language header if no site languages are specified, to avoid that users have English disabled and can’t see most posts #5485
    • Enable english for users on instances with all languages enabled, to resolve the above problem #5489 #5493
    • Only list local banned users under /admin #5364
    • Add crawl-delay to robots.txt #3009

Also one of the main Lemmy developers will be doing an AMA in [email protected] on the 25th.

  • We're not opposed to hosting non-Star Trek communities as long as they adhere to instance guidelines, but before you move you should know that the federation gap with .world is closing and should be finally caught up before the end of the week.

  • Time for startrek.website/c/theymightbegiants?

StarTrek.website has a new logo (and more)!

StarTrek.website have been using the [email protected] logo instance-wide since the beginning, and since we have been seeing above-average growth lately, the admin team figured it was time to zhuzh up our lil' Webzone with it's own identity:

    ...Get it?

We also have (mostly) completed a project I've been working on since the beginning, exclusive StarTrek.website custom animated emojis! Introducing:

StarTrek.website has updated to Lemmy 0.19.7

We were previously on 19.5, so this is a double update. You can see the changes here. Most of the update is some back end stuff, we are also looking into some federation delay with instances that haven't updated yet. The Federation delays appear to have been resolved on our end.

Guess it's time to crawl into the Jefferies tube and make some modifications.

  • Defederation is the nuclear option. Until now we had removed any communities we weren't comfortable hosting, and treated users on a case-by-case basis based on how they behaved in our communities, which worked for a while but became untenable.

When we started this project the admin team felt that welcoming outsiders into our (wholesome, sane) Star Trek communities was the net-positive action. But as I said it became too much to handle so we unfortunately had to cut the cord.

This instance has defederated from hexbear.net for violating our rules against propaganda as outlined in our Terms of Service. If you are unfamiliar, federation means two servers sync and host each other's content. Defederation stops us from syncing their content to our server.

c/Quarks will change to "local only" when Lemmy 0.19.6 releases

EDIT 3: **Due to some bugs we're delaying this feature until Lemmy 0.19.6 is released! **

The goal of c/Quarks has always been to help foster a sense of community for StarTrek.website, but it is just a generic "offtopic" community and does not really have an identity of it's own on the Fediverse.

Thanks to the new feature in Lemmy 19.4, we can create true "local only" communities. And Quark's can be what it was originally intended to be, a place for our users. This will allow us to better discuss what kind of experience users of this instance wish to have (not just provide) without all the dorks on less cool instances coming here and ruining our weather control network.

EDIT: to those of you concerned about missing out on "trek-adjacent discussion" [@[email protected]](https://startrek.website/u/Value

  • The downvotes are all coming from accounts on other instances, which as @[email protected] suggested, makes us think it's most likely people browsing "All" and not appreciating seeing twenty discussion posts (not that that justifies it).

Season one of StarTrek.website is in the bag! So we've added "V'ger", as a treat.

Like many other Lemmy instances, we turned one this week! If you enjoy the Voyager app experience but prefer to only login locally (not that there's any reason whatsoever to distrust vger.app) or not log in at all, we now have an option for you!

    • A friendly reminder that we also have mlem ("old reddit") fronted installed too for those that prefer browsing in a familiar interface on desktop.
    • We do plan on updating to Lemmy 0.19.4 sometime this month so keep an eye out for that!
    • If you've noticed the site hitching lately it's because we were reaching our storage limit (again, oops) so we purchased significantly more storage that appears to be helping.

UPDATED 9-3: StarTrek.website - Lemmy info, FAQ, Patreon info, future plans, and more!

    nuqneH!

Welcome to our new home in the Federationiverse. First of all- WOW we did not expect to surpass 300 users on this instance (and over 1K fediverse subscribers) within our first 48 hours and with little promotional effort. We are all excited to see where this long road goes.

Coming from Reddit and confused about Lemmy?

I had some stuff typed out, but honestly, this thread sums it up better. Check it out! It has infographics.

If you're still stressed out, remember that Lemmy is still new. Yes, it's ugly, but people said Reddit was ugly too (both are correct). As Lemmy grows, and #Rexxit continues, more tools will get made. Decentralization opens up a lot of possibilities we didn't have before. The future is bright.

Will other communities be setting up shop besides StarTrek, DaystromInstitute and Risa?

Yes! Eventually. Right now our focus i
