  • I'd argue that whilst it is the source of the debate that I'm currently only interested in the tangential discussion regarding freedom of speech and whether it is ok to label someone a Nazi because you disagree with them.

You can discuss Musk with other people, I'm not interested.

  • I'm not getting drawn in to the debate of wether it was or wasn't.

I'm defending people's rights to have an opinion without being labeled a Nazi by default because it trivialises the awful crimes commited in WWII.

Denying the holocaust is a crime in some countries, and with good reason. Let me know when we're not allowed to discuss the actions of Musk.

  • Thank you for understanding that I'm only here to talk about free speech.

If the rules were no X posts, then they should've had the post taken down with a warning. I don't think a lifetime ban is a reasonable response to an undesirable opinion, I don't think it meets the requirements of hate speech which is where I'd personally draw the line.

  • It's an opinion. I'm not saying it was, I'm not saying it wasn't, I'm expressing some level of doubt, nothing more nothing less.

But I'm not here to talk about musk's salute, I'm here to say people are entitled to an opinion.

  • Ok, that's fine, but what you are doing is equating everyone that expresses a different opinion on musks salute to a Nazi, and whilst I understand why that is a popular opinion here, I don't think it's entirely helpful.

You could say it's your opinion that they are gullible, delusional, easily misled or whatever else, let me know when democracy, the rule of law and human rights are being infringed and let's talk.

  • Right. The S and P 500 went down 0.5% yesterday, it's a pretty typical trading day and still up over the last five days, month, six months and the year.

Trumps a lunatic, but one thing he does understand is business.

  • I don't care. Read my full comment history if you want, you'll find I'm quite clearly a left winger.

I really don't know what my comment history has to do with my ability to defend freedom of speech.

I couldn't care less if people want to take issue with my opinions, I only ask that it's kept civil and the debate is kept relevant to the subject, I'm not interested in personal attacks.

  • Invasion of privacy, breech of the peace, trespassing and probably more.

Your terrible analogy has almost nothing to do with freedom of speech, if you think a redditor writing an opinion on Musk is equivalent to them playing the drums in your bedroom at night, you might be a tad sensitive.

  • asks definition of a wordwhen given the definition moves the goal posts in an incredibly condescending way.

Why don't you stop criticising me as a person and say what you want to say in plain English?

I take it you can't articulate your problem with my argument and that's why you have a problem with me instead.

  • Opinion:

a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge

What's your point? Other than trying to discredit me by insinuating I'm an idiot?

I never thought that endorsing the freedom of speech would be so controversial!

  • We're back to opinion Vs fact, again!

At the end of the day, until Musk comes out and says, "it was a Nazi salute and I'm a Nazi", it will be up to opinion and everyone has a right to share their opinion.

and I'm sure I know why you do it.

I really don't appreciate the insinuation but the least you could do is grow a pair, come out and say it.

  • The difference here is that you made a post against community guidelines. Where as in this case the guy seems to have been banned for wrong think.

I'm not arguing that communities can't have their own rules.

  • Yes, but in this case we are not talking about a lie, we are talking about an opinion which you yourself consider a lie.

It comes back to objective truth Vs opinion which I have already replied to you about.

Regardless of this, there are cases where lying is protected by the first amendment.

    https://www.freedomforum.org/is-lying-protected-first-amendment/

The example of where lying is not protected in the case to which we are referring would be:

Be a provable assertion of fact (not an opinion)

Which instances have the most diverse points of view?

Since Trump, I'm finding the Lemmy.world experience to be increasingly akin to an echo chamber and it's quite frankly starting to bore me. (Inb4, I'm a left winger and I don't like Trump, but I'm much more interested in a good spirited debate or novel points of view than I am in Orange man bad Nazi circle jerks)

If I wanted the same repetitive comments to be upvoted and any different opinion at all to be downvoted and even blocked/banned, I'd have just stayed on Reddit.

Are there any instances where different, opposing and novel points of view are celebrated and debated rather than simply derided and downvoted?

Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a nazi salute.

I fully understand the man is controversial to say the least, I'm not a huge fan myself, but I think that if he was legitimately a Nazi, that he's smart enough to not outright advertise it.

Socially awkward, autistic, right winger - Yes

    Literally a Nazi - No

    Bring on the downvotes 🤣

What's a good joke present to get your SO for Christmas?

My dad always likes to tell us about the Christmas when my uncle bought my aunt a tin opener (a good one!) for Christmas, she was apparently rather unimpressed but the story has given years worth of good laughs.

I also remember when my dad bought a holiday in New York for my mum and himself for Christmas, but the tickets were in a small envelope right at the bottom of a HUGE box filled with packing peanuts.

What terrible/joke presents can you think of that would be a good laugh on Christmas day?

Elon Musk is not an idiot

I understand why he is unpopular with many people and to be frank I have quite the distaste for all billionaires, but he is not stupid which is something that is often claimed.

No-one becomes a multi-billionaire due to a lack of intelligence or common sense.

Musk knows exactly what he is doing, he didn't buy Twitter to make a quick buck, he bought it derail it and he's done that quite thoroughly. $35bn to Musk is pocket change.

I mean I get it, if I was a big Twitter user and a new CEO made it something that I now hated, I'd think the bloke was an idiot, but that is actually just a difference of opinion and has nothing to do with intelligence.

In short, whilst Musk is clearly very unpopular with some people and I can understand why, the man clearly is not an idiot. Some people really don't like it when you tell them that.

Edit: 14 downvotes in 30 minutes lol, I can't say I wasn't expecting this but judging by the replies so far, I think it just proves that it's an unpopular opinio

What are you getting your significant other for Christmas?

I'm looking for inspiration! She wants to go on a holiday at some point during the year as a gift, but I really want to give her something on Christmas day.

    How to catch houseflies?

The weather has finally warmed up here and now there plenty of super annoying houseflies. They're way to fast to swat and have an annoying habit of landing on you.

I've tried Google's suggestion of water/vinegar and a bit of dish soap in a bottle, but they don't seem to go for it at all.

I'm up for trying anything, please make suggestions!

Edit: Thank you to all for your suggestions. So far I've tried the idea of spraying them with surface cleaner which appears to work well

A colleague sent a video of a murder at work today and I'm still seething. What rights do I have? (UK)

It's already well known at work that I don't just not like gore videos but that I hate them and actively avoid them.

A colleague sent me a video of a man being murdered by axe via WhatsApp to my personal phone on my lunch break. Before I opened it I asked if it was a video that I would want to see (because I know what sort of character he is), he implied it was fine.

Despite my suspicion I took his word and watched it. I immediately scolded him, he then made light of the situation, I told him that it wasn't funny and that if it ever happened again I would be making a formal complaint immediately.

A couple of minutes later, another colleague came in to the mess room, the guy that sent the video made fun of me for not liking the video in front of them. I told him that he was making fun of me and that I wasn't ok with that.

Do I have the right to not be sent murder videos? What would an employer do if I made a complaint?

    Achievement unlocked!

It wasn't a very long game but I had 0 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes and 0 blunders!

The London is the first opening I've learnt, I've been practicing it for a while now and I'm feeling like I'm getting good at it.

Maybe it's time to learn another opening. Any suggestions?

Car Mechanics of Lemmy - Do you have a puncture repair kit that you would recommend?

    Hi,

I already have a good tool kit, drill, needle files etc, so I'm mainly looking for a kit that doesn't needlessly double up on tools that I already have but I'm here for your advice so I'll look at anything you recommend.

Ideally the kit would have enough bits and pieces that I could store it and keep it for future punctures also, but I could just order a multiple of single use kits if that is what you'd recommend.

    Please let me know! Thanks.

Advice wanted. Why does my cat jump out of his skin?

    Hi all,

I've recently adopted an 8 year old ginger tom from the rescue centre. We don't know much of his history except for that his old owner passed away and no one else in the family was willing to take him.

We've have had him about 8 weeks and he does have some strange behaviour issues like being a little bit scratchy and bitey, but this mostly seems to be misdirected play and he has been improving whilst we try to be understanding and accommodating. Apart from that he's a lovely cat. He's quite clingy and always wants to know what you're up to!

Anyways, on to the question. Every know and then, when he is relaxing, not even asleep sometimes. He will launch him self out of his skin! It's obviously a fear reaction but I have no idea what sets him off. He recovers from this almost immediately and usually just starts relaxing again.

I wondered if anyone had any experience or advice of a cat that does this? I've had cats my whole life but I have never seen one do this before.
