Reading too much into the language seems, at this point, to be less of a danger than reading too little into it.

This week, Israel released an appalling video featuring five female Israeli soldiers taken captive at Nahal Oz military base on October 7. Fearful and bloody, the women beg for their lives while Hamas fighters mill around and alternately threaten to kill them and compliment their appearance. The captors call the women “sabaya,” which Israel translated as “women who can get pregnant.” Almost immediately, others disputed the translation and said sabaya referred merely to “female captives” and included no reference to their fertility. “The Arabic word sabaya doesn’t have sexual connotations,” the Al Jazeera journalist Laila Al-Arian wrote in a post on X, taking exception to a Washington Post [article](https://apple.news/ArJX9-LvOTDCc6JGfT

Reddthat Update: April 2024

April is here and we're still enjoying our little corner of the lemmy-verse! This post is quite late for our April announcement as my chocolate coma has only now subsided

Donations

Due to some recent huge donations recently on our Ko-Fi we decided to migrate our database from our previous big server to a dedicated database server. The idea behind this move was to allow our database to respond faster with a faster CPU. It was a 3.5GHz cpu rather than what we had which was a 3.0GHz. This, as we know, did not pan out as we expected. After that fell through we have now migrated everything to 1 huge VPS in a completely different hosting company (OVH).

Since the last update I used the donations towards setting up an EU proxy to filter out down votes & spam as a way to try and respond faster to allow us to catch up. We've purchased the new VPS from OVH (which came out of the Ko-Fi money), & did the test of the separate database server in our previous hosting company.

Our Donations as of

Bulletins and News Discussion from September 4th to September 10th, 2023 - You Have Nothing To Lose But Your Supply Chains - COTW: Libya

Image is of container ships waiting outside the canal. While there is usually some number of ships waiting for passage, the number has increased significantly lately.

In order to move ships through the Panama Canal, water is needed to fill the locks. The water comes from freshwater lakes, which are replenished by rainfall. This rainfall hasn't been coming, and Lake Gatun, the largest one, is at near record low levels.

Hundreds of ships are now in a maritime traffic jam, unable to cross the canal quickly. Panama is attempting to conserve water and have reduced the number of transits by 20% per day, among other measures. The Canal's adminstrators have warned that these drought conditions will remain for at least 10 months.

It is unlikely that global supply chains will be catastrophically affected, at least this year. Costs may increase for consumer

Ballard FC win USL2 championship in thriller at Starfire

Jayda Evans (Seattle Times)

Peter Kingston blasted into the history books with a shot off a set piece near the touchline to give Ballard a 2-1 victory against Virginia’s Lionsbridge FC on a rainy Saturday night. Ballard, which is in its second season, topped a fourth-division men’s league that has 122 teams for its first championship.

Annoyed by Lemmy links not going to your home instance? I just updated LULs, the script that changes all Lemmy links everywhere to your home instance!

cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/1606937

If you didn't already know about it, I included the full description after the release notes.

Release 1.3.0

  • You can now add multiple secondary instances: so if you, like me, also have an account on lemmynsfw.com (or of course any other instance), you can add that there and not have links rewritten for that instance
  • You can manually enter your home instance. Useful for self-hosted instances that didn't show up in my instance list.

Full Description Below:

Description

Lemmy Universal Link Switcher, or LULs for short, scans all links on all websites, and if any link points to a Lemmy instance that is not your main/home instance, it rewrites the link so that it instead points to your main instance.

Also works on Firefox Android with the Tampermonkey extension!
