SLRPNK Community Discussion - February 2025

Each month, we write up a post for the instance to keep you up to date on the happenings going on, recent events, to give a spotlight to new communities, share knowledge, and provide a place to discuss as a town square!

February. Good 'ol Feb. It's here now, and it won't be leavin' for a whole month (hopefully on good terms), so let's put our best foot forward and hope it will return our courtesy.

Last month was a bit of a doozy, both on a global scale and for the instance itself (more on that below). This month, we'll be tackling how our members can become a bit safer in this increasingly worrying world.

Let's get into it!

ā›” Pushing Back Against Big Tech 🧿

Big Tech and mainstream social media have been a negative influence on society for quite some time, but this January has shown us just how complicit they've become in the rise of fascism around the globe, which only underlines the extreme importance of replacing it with federated, [Citizen Control

Is there a linux distro (or just a DE) that can be used like a Smart TV

I don't want to use Osmc or LibreELEC. What I'm going for is something like Android TV (tried using LineageOS but that didn't work out for me).

I was interested in something like Plasma Bigscreen but most of the tutorial is about 4 years old and point to using an old image.

I installed the Debian package. After that, I logged in and set Automatic login, and switch the session to Plasma Bigscreen (x11). After applying and a reboot, it launched Plasma Bigscreen but some widgets (like the audio, KDE Connect) froze when clicking on them.

What do you recommend? I prefer to use a Raspberry Pi.

My List of Open Source & Privacy Oriented Android Software

I hope that my list of apps will help out people, particularly those new to this world of privacy. These apps fit into the categories that people typically look for or should have and they are all at least fairly recently updated.

It's foolish to think open source isn't possible on Android.

0. Introduction

I was a fool myself, I thought the apps my phone's vendor made were simply too aesthetically pleasing to switch from. I thought there were barely any good libre apps, and they were all limited in functionality compared to their closed source alternatives. I was ignorant to the fact that the apps I was using were filled to the brim with corporation branding, useless features, and bugs (which I thought were acceptible for some reason). But I digress, I'm here to show that there is a world where you install only libre software and still use your phone to do whatever you'd like. I needed this years ago, so I'll take you on a journey down the rabbit hole to prove it.

Assuming you already have some idea why libre software is preferable, the first step is embracing minimalism. Of course, you will not find open source versions of the exact same prop

microG + SafetyNet

[Saved before deleting from Reddit] This post is based on Reddit post but adopted to my experience. ROM will be able to pass BASIC SafetyNet Attestation: working most(~95% as of now) banking apps, Google Pay; Google Contants Cloud Sync will work as expected; applications that do not support Magisk overlays will still work. For me, this is a 100% working setup. I use LineageOS myself in this form and am completely satisfied.

There are several ways to get LineageOS to your device. First: official, without pre-installed microG and GApps. Second: unofficial, but with a built-in microG out of the box. My instruction is written based on the first type of builds. LineageOS for microG is a wonderful project, but I needed Play Store so that applications would not have problems with license verifications (Repainter, KWGT, for example, do not work if there is no Play Store). And on the second type of builds,
