Kuro stops Doflamingo

Remember that iconic scene, where Luffy stops Doflamingo from kicking in Laws head? Well someone edited Kuro in there

Yes I found it funny, because of how unimportant and removed Kuro is from all this. And there are still hardcore Kuro fans out there, who remember him from 20 years ago.

So I bought a vibration sensor with grand dreams of being notified the moment my dryer has finished its majestic cycle. Sadly, it turns out my dryer is about as emotionally expressive as a brick...barely any vibration, and now I’m left holding a lonely, unemployed sensor. Instead of tossing it in the junk drawer of shame, I figured I’d turn to you brilliant folks.

What’s the weirdest, most creative, or surprisingly useful way you’ve used a vibration sensor in your setup?

Bonus points if it involves pets, revenge, or something my spouse will side-eye but secretly appreciate. Hit me with your best ideas! Save my sensor! TIA

[Edit] The dryer sensing issue has

Gold Crown Poké Ball ?!

Yesterday in a ranked match, a player drew this rare card I had no clue even existed. Does anyone knows anything about it? Very little about it is available online beyond just confirming that it exists (picture)... What packs? What extension?

[edit]: It looks like it's actually the only Crown card from A2b, with a pull rate similar to Arceus EX gold (0.004%) !!

My first round of thoughts on lowering the barriers for signup

I was invited to comment here by u/BlazeAlt on Reddit last week regarding ways to lower the barriers to joining the Fediverse for average users — so here I go.

I'm sure a lot of this has been discussed ad nauseam, but I do have some specific starting suggestions at the end.

With corporate, single-instance social media, there's one place you go sign up, and you're in. You can find things that interest you with a simple search, and you can find people you know either by their names (Facebook) or by a very simple handle ([at]nickname). And if you're trying to build up an online identity — say, for your new podcast — if you're handle is unique enough you can end each episode with "and you can find us at MyNewPodcast on all the socials!"

Federated social media requires you to choose an instance before you can even sign up. But...

  • What the hell's an "instance"?
  • How do I choose on

Amateur Radio @lemmy.radio
K3LOE @lemmy.radio

For those who do public service in the US, do you use a dedicated dual band VHF/UHF radio, or the same all-band, all-mode radio you use for other activities like POTA?

I’m inclined to go with the long-term cost savings of a radio that does everything but wondering if others have good reasons to go with a dedicated, simplified rig. I would be purchasing used equipment either way. And would have to use either radio for base as well as mobile use. #PublicSevice #VHF #UHF

[EDIT] to clarify I'm in the US, where "public service" (being communications support for primarily bike and foot races, where I live) does indeed happen on the amateur VHF/UHF bands. This is who I volunteer with, for context: https://www.hpsnc.org/. They also require a mobile (not handheld) radio at least 25W.

OpenAI calls for US government to codify 'fair use' for AI training

In a proposal for the U.S. government’s “AI Action Plan,” the Trump Administration’s initiative to reshape American AI policy, OpenAI called for a U.S. copyright strategy that “preserves] American AI models’ ability to learn from copyrighted material.”

“America has so many AI startups, attracts so much investment, and has made so many research breakthroughs largely because the fair use doctrine promotes AI development,” OpenAI wrote.

It’s not the first time OpenAI, which has trained many of its models on openly available web data, often without the data owners’ [knowledge](https://techcrunch.com/

[Huge edit] There was something filed in 2020. I'm not sure how this "priority claimed from" works though, but...

This current post, now that I found that 2020 filing, is possibly if not probably incorrect in terms of my video publication being prior to his patent. I'd have to go back to my discussions in irc or discord to find my earliest mentions.

Customizable upvote/downvote colors

[Edit] Per the comment below, the suggested feature is already possible via the custom theme creator (Appearance Settings > App Theme).

For anyone else looking to replicate Reddit's arrow colors, upvote on mobile is #ff4500, while downvote is #7193ff. Now that I'm trying it, I think I actually prefer the default due to the subtler contrast of the blue, but being able to change it is definitely a helpful option to have.

Something that I think has been missing from most Lemmy UIs is distinct upvote and downvote colors, versus the red upvotes and blue downvotes present on the standard Reddit interface.

Although I personally wouldn't feel the need to customize my upvote/downvote colors beyond that, given that others might want colors other than red and blue, I think implementing such a feature with an assortment of default colors customizable for each button would maximize its usefulness. Implementing it with a color wheel or a hex color input option would maximize options even

Gloves for wind/rain/cold protection

I'm intending to buy some gloves to use for commuting on cold days. I'm looking for something wind-proof, fairly light, and hopefully a bit water resistant.

Here are three sets of gloves that I've been looking at:

  • Outdoor Research, commuter windstopper gloves
  • Arc'teryx, Venta gloves
  • Rab, Vapour-Rise gloves

I don't really know if any of those are good options. But they seem roughly what I'm looking for.

I'm wondering what gloves other people wear, and if you have any recommendations.

[edit] Although the primary purpose of the gloves is for commuting; I'd also like them to be my general "go to" gloves for whenever they are needed when visiting cold places.

Refresher on fascism

With recent events around the world, the middle east, Kanye calling himself a Nazi, Trump, Musk and his was it was it not a Nazi salute, antisemitism, genocide, etc, etc, I have been thinking about the state of the world and what's been happening in the USA in particular (I'm not from the USA). I was wondering how to describe what is happening there, and I was a little rusty on the terminology to be honest. So I was thinking, is it fascism? What was that exactly again? I needed a refresher so I figured I'd ask a quick summary from ChatGPT and holy moly:

Can you summarize in a bullet list when something van be concidered fascism

Should we create a mega thread for show recommendations?

I don't want to stop interest in UK TV, however I have seen a few questions about UK TV recommendations (maybe not all in this sub).

I remember seeing this happen a lot in the UK TV subs on Reddit which always ended up being the same 20 shows giving a low signal to noise, so I was wondering whether we could preempt it by making a mega thread to point people to to improve the quality of recommendations. Perhaps have some rules, such as only a single show per comment so people can vote on what they did or didn't enjoy and end up with a ranked list?

Other thoughts I had were a mega thread per type of show, so popular sitcoms or police procedurals don't drown out interesting dramas, and therefore an index pinned to point people to?

[Edit] Maybe each comment should contain the location where it can be watched? Might be hard as region restrictions mean that folks outside the UK wouldn't add iPlayer URLs.

Observations on librebooting t480

Basically, a collection of notes on building and running libreboot on t480. Hope it helps sb avoid a few pitfalls I've personally encountered. Corrections/other ways to do stuff are welcome.

  1. If you're building libreboot from source like I did, you may want to replace repo URLs with mirrors in config/git/grub, as gnu repos are slow AF;
  2. To boot your system, you'll need it to either be bootable via legacy bios (libreboot uses seabios by default), or, more realistically, have grub bootloader. On NixOS, I've changed the bootloader config to:
 (nix)

boot.loader.grub = {
  enable = true;
  device = "nodev"; # generate grub.cfg without installing grub itself
  theme = lib.mkForce null;
  font = lib.mkForce null;
  splashImage = lib.mkForce null;
};

Notice the disabled theming/fonts/background image: in my case, libreboot's grub would only show the blank screen 'til I disabled them, so

So this whole vigilante murder thing...

[EDIT] Inb4 more people try to suggest that I'm mourning the loss of this scumbag capitalist fuck: No, I'm not sad he's dead. No, I don't think corporate murder is acceptable and no, I would not ever rat to police if I knew the shooter and yes, I believe the punishment fits the crimes he's committed against untold thousands of people. THAT SAID...

I'm not down with vigilante murder or anything because it seems like the slipperiest of slopes toward chaos, but what other option is there in a situation where someone seeks to make an impact in this way? You can't just beat up evil CEOs and let them go back to work. It would be naĂŻve to expect them to change their ways when faced with consequences for their actions and then promptly let go. It just seems like the chances that it emboldens their penchant for exploitative behaviour and disdain for people in need are too high.

We're just born into and strapped to this capitalist ride and expected to sit quiet and make these leeches their bi
