Magic team unbans cards for Commander, but not the ones you expected

Principal Magic: The Gathering designer Gavin Verhey announced that some cards are now legal to play once more in Commander, the trading card game’s most popular multiplayer format. Five cards in total were unbanned by publisher Wizards of the Coast. Conspicuously absent from that list, however, were the cards involved in last year’s controversial bansDockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, and

"Doctor Who is a cartoon" (Mark Strickson, 1990)

Excerpts from a speech and interview given by Mark Strickson, who played companion Vislor Turlough in the '80s:

The problem with Doctor Who is that it isn't real acting. It does get very boring actually, because by necessity it is two-dimensional acting. You can't have a depth of character because it's a comic strip. […]

When American science fiction fans watch it, they roar with laughter. I suppose it is a comedy. If you try to look logically at Doctor Who you have to look very hard.

I pick these parts out because they line up pretty well (although superficially) with the most recent episode where the Doctor is actually turned into an animated character, but particularly the last sentence feels like a harder jab at the mindset of Who fandom than the depiction of fans in "Lux".

To be fair, Strickson offers suggestions to add more character depth, following the

When Polygon had a chance to video-chat with Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu in advance of the new season, there was an experience that leapt out as their favorite: filming the animated sequences for this Saturday’s episode.

Not recording — filming.

“Shooting the animation was very fun,” Gatwa said, “because it was just a different way of working, and we’ve not had that.”

“I think when we first read it,” Sethu added, “we assumed that we’d be doing a voice-over much later on and they wer

Shinichirō Watanabe has never done something quite like Lazarus before.

Sure, the 59-year-old anime director of Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, and more isn’t new to science fiction, nor is he a stranger to suspense thrillers like Terror in Resonance. But a globe-trotting, sci-fi spy thriller about a secret task force assigned to apprehend a brilliant scientist before he kills off all of humanity? That’s a new one, and from the sound of it, that’s just the way Watanabe likes it. “I would’ve done [more Bebop] if it felt right,” Watanabe [told Polygon last year](https://www.polygon.com/preview/467590/lazarus-anime-sh

Trump tariffs may stop Gloomhaven from reaching retail stores in the US

It’s no exaggeration to say that the release of Gloomhaven, the campaign-in-a-box board game, was a watershed moment for the tabletop industry in 2017. Here was a high-concept physical product that weighed close to 18 pounds. Inside were modular tiles and plastic miniatures, maps and secret envelopes, all adding up to an experience to be shared with family and friends over 100 or more unique gameplay sessions. Its innovations and subsequent popularity substantially shifted consumer expectations for tabletop games in the years that followed, and it was all the creation of one game designer from L

Polygon sat down with Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu, the stars of Doctor Who’s latest season, recently by video chat, and when we asked for their favorite things they got to do while filming, there was one that they truly gushed about.

“I love the outfits,” Sethu said. “Honestly, I love the outfit reveals. […] The first time we come on set looking at each other in our outfits, I feel like we don’t know how to behave.”

“No, we don’t!” Gatwa exclaimed, as they both laughed.

The new gameplay trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn, out Wednesday from Bloober Team, debuts some tense gameplay featuring the protagonist — a time traveler with futuristic armor and an arsenal of weapons — facing off against misshapen, humanlike enemies with oozing, wiggling tendrils emerging from various parts of their bodies. I got to see even more at the Game Developers Conference in March, where I sat down with Jacek Zięba and Wojciech Piejko, who are co-directing the game at Bloober Team. And I can tell you one thing for sure: This game looks hard.

I didn’t play Cronos myself; the preview was hands-off, so instead I was treated to watching Zięba play through a section of the game as his colleague Piejko told me about its time trave

Wide sweeping tariffs levied by US President Donald Trump have led to uncertainty in just how the XR hardware industry will react. Now, Bigscreen says its recently announced Beyond 2 PC VR headset will not see a price increase as a result.

Bigscreen released a statement on X wherein the company maintains its Beyond 2 headset, priced at $1,019, isn’t getting a price bump despite increased tariffs applied to many goods manufactured in China.

According to Bigscreen, the company sources Beyond 2 components and assemblies from a variety of regions, including China, Japan and Europe. While “significant final assembly and testing” take place at its Los Angeles-based factory, many of the most expensive components and assemblies are made outside the US, which have “dramatically increased […] costs.”

Plus, the tensions brewing in Tar Valon finally boil over, ushering in a new status quo for the White Tower in suitably drama

Netflix only promoted Sean Krankel to the role of general manager of the streamer’s burgeoning “narrative games” division a few weeks ago, so he’s still working on his elevator pitch for exactly what “narrative game” means at Netflix. But he knows one thing: After working on the newly released Black Mirror tie-in game Thronglets with the team at Night School Studio, which he co-founded in 2014 and was acquired by Netflix in 2021, the MO of developing new narrative games has unlimited potential.
