Sort by controversial can only load a limited number of posts

In using the 'Controversial' sorting option for my All feed, I found that it was consistently only able to load a limited number of posts before erroring out.

Edit: After testing in Safari via the regular Lemmy client, the same behavior occurring seems to indicate that it's a bug with Lemmy itself, rather than Arctic specifically.

Edit: Confirmed with the Lemmy developers that it had indeed been a bug in the backend, but has already been resolved in a development version of the software testable on voyager.lemmy.ml.

Leaving Arctic post filters blank hides all posts

While I've made use of title and domain filters for a few weeks now to filter out unwanted posts from communities I otherwise don't want to block, I noticed today that if you press the 'Add Filter' button for Title, Domain, Community Name, or Username filters, but leave the filter blank, all posts will be hidden.

In the case of Domain filters, oddly up to three recent non-URL posts seem to be able to appear when a Domain filter is blanked out, but not all non-URL posts in general.

For some reason, the same problem doesn't seem to occur when blanking out a Content filter, as far as I can tell.

Here's is a demonstration of the glitch, using a blank Community Name filter:

Search tab spacing inconsistencies

Most people probably wouldn't notice it, but the gap between 'Search' and 'TRENDING COMMUNITIES' is inconsistent.

I marked the initial height of it with a line in the example GIF below. It gets shorter after tapping the search bar and exiting out of it, and then taller after the page is refreshed.

Correcting typo in search box causes the typo to be suggested for future uses of that word

In recording the example videos for my prior bug report, I at one point accidentally entered 'Stean' instead of 'Steam' into the search box, subsequently re-recording the video to correct the typo.

Since then, however, when I enter the word 'Steam' into the search box, conduct the search, and then tap on the search box again to edit the query, it selects the word and suggests a reversion to 'Stean', rather than placing the blinking cursor after Steam to let me edit the text as normal. The issue persists after restarting the app.

After some trial and error of figuring out how I had triggered the glitch in the first place, I replicated it with the word 'Worry' and its typo 'Worrt' for the example GIF below. If it helps in determining the cause, the glitch does not seem to apply to words beyond a certain length, as my initial idea of 'examples' and 'examplez' did not trigger the glitch, nor did 'tomatoes' and 'tomatoez'.

Switching search type before current search finishes temporarily breaks the search tool

Normally, the search tool takes the input query, applies it to the search type selected (Community/Comment/Post/User), and outputs the corresponding results. The user then has the option of switching to another one of the three tabs to repeat the search with a different search type. This functioning normally is demonstrated in the first GIF below:

If the user switches to a different tab before the search completes, however, the search is unable to be applied to the newest tab. Tapping on the search box and pressing enter also doesn't enable the query to be processed in this case, without at least removing or adding a character to it first.

The first example is quickly switching tabs before the initial search is able to load:

Lemmy Explorer community list loading is interrupted if the search bar is tapped on first

If you open Lemmy Explorer and tap on the search bar before the community list loads, neither the community count nor the communities themselves will appear until you either enter something into the search bar or cancel the search.

Random Community button is missing most communities from its randomization pool

Having curated my Lemmy Explorer list to specifically exclude subjects beyond my interests, I don't usually make use of the 'Random Community' button. After just tapping it a few times in a row, however, I noticed that it seemed to be drawing community names from a tiny subset of the 933 communities that I haven't blocked.

People with shorter block lists than me are likely to have a greater degree of variation from the randomizer. That aside, of the hundreds of options it should have been able to choose from, the randomizer only selected the following nine communities during my extensive testing of it:

Entries near the start of the list were chosen more frequently than those towards the end of it, for some reason.

Switching tabs causes loading icons to freeze

A minor graphical bug, but thought I'd still make note of it.

It's a distinct bug from the one affecting the Lemmy Explorer loading icon that I posted above a few days ago, as this one seems to affect all loading icons.

Quickly tapping on post image upon loading post sometimes skips animation

Typically, if you tap on a post's image, there is a quick animation that scales the image up from its current location on the screen until it fills the screen completely.

For some reason, sometimes when the post image is tapped on very quickly after the post is loaded, the animation is skipped.

It doesn't seem to occur consistently, but in recording it for the GIF below, it occurred on my fourth loading of the post, each time quickly repeatedly tapping on the post image as soon as it appeared. The GIF itself consists of the third and fourth of those loadings, with the third having the normal animation and the fourth lacking it.

As the difference is harder to see at low frame rates, I tried uploading a high frame rate GIF to no avail, so if needed I can share the original video file via different means.

Error messages stay on screen until user finishes scrolling through feed

While scrolling through my curated community list in Lemmy Explorer, I noticed that error messages do not disappear until scrolling finishes, or if the user switches the direction they're scrolling in.

Below I've included examples of how an error message is displayed without and with scrolling. While I scrolled through the feed quickly to keep the GIF short enough to be able to upload it directly to Lemmy, testing indicated that as long as scrolling continues uninterrupted, the error message remains on the screen.

Editing comment temporarily duplicates link previews

If a comment has text that's recognized as a URL, the system auto-generates a link preview for it. As the link preview of the updated comment doesn't replace existing ones, it's possible to repeatedly duplicate link previews via successive edits to the same comment. The view returns to normal once the page is reloaded.

The GIF below demonstrates the bug:

Cached Block/Unblock action is not updated when pressing 'Back' at the top left

Another obscure glitch with blocking and unblocking.

To make the glitch occur, go to a community, then go to one of its posts, and go to the same community again from the link on that post. If you block or unblock that community and then press the Back button at the top left twice, the original community screen you started on will retain the original blocked/unblocked action, rather than the updated one.

I put a GIF illustrating the menu saying "Block" rather than "Unblock", but testing indicated that the reverse case can also make the menu say "Unblock" rather than "Block".

Photo upload tool has unclear error message when trying to upload a non-GIF video

Before downloading a shortcut to convert my screen recordings to GIF format for my last bug report, I tried uploading the original videos directly. Rather than getting an error for what I assume is video uploads not being supported, or perhaps the 10.5MB video being too large, I received the following error message:

Not sure if it's a glitch, or just an unclear error message, but I'd thought I'd try to be as descriptive as possible.

Edit: The issue has since also occurred with a 7.2MB, 33 second GIF. If it helps narrow down the cause, the issue did not occur when I uploaded a 23 second re-recorded version of the video that ended up being 5.7MB after converted into GIF format.

Inserting a code block, formatted line, lemmy emoji, spoiler formatting, or last space character on a line causes the edit window to jump to the top

Don't usually write long posts or comments, but saw this occurring with my last bug report post, and subsequently tested every formatting option to make a comprehensive bug report. I recorded an example of each for demonstration purposes, included below.

Strikethrough, subscript, and superscript formatting while writing or editing a comment or post is glitched

While marking text with the strikethrough or subscript options, several visual glitches seem to occur that are inconsistent with other formatting options and with how the final text is displayed.

Firstly, the strikethrough preview at times affects the tildes characters, unlike what occurs for previewing bold or italic formatting. This isn't always the case for some reason though, as occurs if I try marking the word 'formatting' in the first paragraph with strikethrough formatting. In that case (as illustrated below), the second set of tildes are not stricken through, along with the 'ing' of 'formatting'.

Another glitch that occurs is that the text appears small when marked with strikethrough formatting in the formatting, seemingly due to the use of a single tilde character for subscript format

Quoted text preview is not consistent with quoted text displayed

In reviewing my prior comments, I saw that a quote I had included in one of my comments looked odd, and realized that I had forgotten to put a blank line between the quote and my reply to it, as such:

Assuming the intended behavior is for the quote to continue until there's a blank line to end it (I'd think a line break character ending it would make more sense, myself, even though I think a comment looks better with a space between quoted text and non-quoted text, but I assume there's a predefined means by which Lemmy clients are meant to display them), the preview formatting should highlight the full text that ends up b

Favorite/Unfavorite action doesn't automatically update in community feed view

In reference to the community Subscribe, Favorite, and Block actions accessible via the three dot icon to the right of the community name at the top of the screen, the Favorite/Unfavorite actions function normally on community feed pages, but don't switch to the opposite action when tapped as the other two actions do, or as Favorite itself does do when attempting the same from one of that community's post pages.

Note that the Favorite action can be manually updated on the community feed screen either by leaving the screen and returning to it, or adjusting the Block or Subscribe setting after adjusting the Favorite setting.

Loading icon stays in place when refreshing a blocked community's feed

When a community isn't blocked, the feed refresh swipe action works as normal, with the loading icon animation lasting for less than a second before disappearing.

If the same is done with the page of a community you just blocked, the loading icon will continue until switching tabs and returning, at which point the loading icon disappears.

Lemmy Explorer loading icon gets stuck

Loving the new features so far, especially the improvements to Lemmy Explorer that facilitate community searching! Going to wait a few days before posting more suggestions from the list I've been compiling, so in the meantime I'll stick to reporting bugs as I find them.

In this case, the new loading icon seems to get stuck, as such:

If I were to upload a video of the glitch, all frames would be like the image above, as the loading icon gets stuck. Thanks again for all your hard work!

Hidden Posts option on user profiles displays contents of All feed instead

In contrast to the Liked Posts, Disliked Posts, Liked Comments, and Disliked Comments options, which don't appear to work yet, the Hidden Posts option (on both one's own user profile and other user profile) simply displays the contents of the All feed below the user page header.

Edit: Although the 0.4.5.14 update fixed the problem of the hidden posts user profile section appearing on every user profile, rather than just one's own, it still appears to just list the contents of the All feed, rather than specifically posts that the user has set as hidden.
