Which version for beginners?
Should I get started with the Classic or the Steam version? What are the pros and cons of both versions?

Definitely steam version. The cutesy graphics and mouse-clickable menus are a way better entry point than ascii.
Unless you specifically like the ascii graphics and not using a mouse, the versions are otherwise identical (i think, maybe someone can correct me).
classic version is free though.
