I don’t know when intersectionality started becoming the intersections of two identities, but intersectionality started as a way to help explain why a rich black man has very different outcomes from a poor black man. This is a very valid way of analyzing society that has completely fallen by the wayside; now, intersectionality means BIPOC and gay, which makes no sense. You can lump all minorities (gender, religion, race, sexuality) into just one category of “disadvantaged“ and be done with it because we are talking about the same thing. These are all groups that are facing discrimination from the superstructure of capitalism, we don’t need to split hairs about how gays and black gays have different outcomes because it’s trivial. All you’re doing is vomiting academic jargon that puts people into buckets and induces oppression Olympics. Are we really going to argue that a gay is more or less disadvantaged than a black man? Similarly, are we really going to argue that a poor black man is better off than a rich gay black man? Current “intersectionality” makes no accounting of race, when that was the entire basis of thought to begin with, which had validity as it was derived from material circumstances. I just don’t see a future for this, besides being trotted out every five years or so to distract from meaningful organizational opportunities.
