Comparing the different versions of the title sequence
I saw an article written about “Thought Leadership: A Corporate Conversation” and how the intro was different than normal. The article claimed that there were only a few episodes throughout the series that did not use the standard title sequence, and I thought that was not an accurate statement at all. So, I compiled a list of all the variations of the title sequence over the years.
- Original, seasons 1-4
- A bunch of B-roll footage from a vehicle driving along the streets of Philadelphia at night
- The music is what is now likely best known as the theme song for the series: Heinz Kiessling - "Temptation Sensation"
- Along the bottom of the frame is a series of credits for various cast/crew for the episode. The font here is the standard Lucida Casual
- High definition, seasons 5-[present]
- The intro was recreated from scratch by driving the same streets and shooting the same shots, this time with a high definition camera
- Ireland, season 16, episodes 5-7
- These three episodes had an intro that is basically the exact same concept as the normal intro, but instead of the streets of Philadelphia, it is streets in Ireland
- The background music is upbeat Celtic rock
- Single episode
- S5E13 "A Very Sunny Christmas"
- Effectively the same thing as the regular intro, just with the streets covered in snow, Christmas lights up all around, and other small details to fit the time period
- The theme song has sleighbells added to create more of a Christmas vibe
- S8E3 "The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre"
- Just a bunch of red horror-themed text on a solid black background
- The music is an intense grandiose orchestral piece to fit the horror vibe
- S11E6 "Being Frank"
- A montage of shots of Frank getting ready for the day
- The backing music is a more thoughtful/wistful, less whimsical orchestral piece
- S12E5 "Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer"
- A montage of B-roll shots from later in the episode
- The backing music is a more somber orchestral piece
- S14E6 "The Janitor Always Mops Twice"
- Just a still shot of the restroom door with a red stain on it. As with the rest of this noir-themed episode, it is entirely in black-and-white except for occasional red accents.
- The backing music is a suspenseful/mysterious orchestral piece
- S15E8 "The Gang Carries a Corpse Up a Mountain"
- The final episode of the Ireland arc has a title sequence that is similar in concept to that of the other Ireland episodes. But it is instead made up of overhead drone shots of Irish cliffsides, with a less upbeat traditional Irish-sounding instrumental piece
- S17E8 "The Golden Bachelor Live"
- Definitely the shortest intro, this takes the more modern approach of just briefly placing the series logo onscreen with a quick "jingle" of a theme song.
- Not merely a parody of the series The Golden Bachelor, this entire episode actually presents itself as if it literally is an episode of The Golden Bachelor. As such, the intro is just that series logo, and does not even reference It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia at all.
- S5E13 "A Very Sunny Christmas"
- The normal intro, just with different music
- S13E9 "The Gang Wins the Big Game"
- Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger"
- S14E7 "The Gang Solves Global Warming"
- Glenn Frey - "The Heat Is On"
- S14E10 "Waiting for Big Mo"
- Hector Berlioz - "Symphonie fantastique", fifth movement
- S17E4 "Thought Leadership: A Corporate Conversation"
- An original instrumental piece that is reminiscent of the theme music for Succession.
- S13E9 "The Gang Wins the Big Game"
