Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been jailed for 10 weeks after punching a man in the street.
The Runcorn and Helsby MP pleaded guilty in January to assault by beating of 45-year-old Paul Fellows in Main Street, Frodsham, Cheshire, in the early hours of 26 October.
As well as a 10-week jail sentence, Amesbury must pay £200 compensation to Mr Fellows.
His future as an MP remains under question as his lawyer indicated he will appeal the sentence.
Otherwise, MPs who receive a custodial sentence, even if it is suspended, automatically trigger a recall petition which could result in a by-election if 10% of constituents sign it.

'In amongst the shattered peat was a perfectly preserved human foot – brown and complete with toenails.
Wilmslow in 1984 was a medium-sized, old-fashioned town with its fair share of furrier and celebrities, plus a couple of pharmaceutical companies to keep it rooted in the 20th century – not the kind of place where anyone would have guessed the UK’s most significant archaeological discovery of the century would be made.
It was there, in the rickety offices of the Wilmslow World on Water Lane one hot August day I received the call that would lead to the town being assured a place in the annals of ancient history, through the discovery of the UK’s first bog body to be removed intact from the peat.

Andy Mould and Eddie Slack had been watching the peat coming down a huge conveyor belt when one of them had spotted a lump of peat: 'like a rugby-ball,' they told me. One picked it up to lob at the othe

A video has emerged appearing to show MP Mike Amesbury shouting and swearing at a man who is lying on the pavement during an apparent disturbance in Cheshire.
The Labour member for Runcorn and Helsby is seen pointing to the man and saying “you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?” in the early hours of Saturday in Frodsham town centre.
It is not clear from the footage, which was apparently filmed by an onlooker, what happened in the moments beforehand.
A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said officers were called to reports of an assault and were examining the circumstances.

Posting on his own Facebook page, the 55-year-old backbencher said: "Last night I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened following an evening out with friends.
"This morning I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened.

Day-Lewis has come out of retirement for Anemone, which his son Ronan Day-Lewis is directing, and is starring alongside Sean Bean and Samantha Morton.
Filming for the feature took place in Handbridge in Chester this week, but ran into some difficulties after the council declined an application for a road closure, and traffic wardens began issuing tickets for the prop vehicles parked on double yellow lines.
Pictures taken by a resident showed yellow parking tickets stuck to the windows of a number of vehicles, including a Ford Escort van, with production crew and filming equipment visible in the background. A row of late 20th-century vehicles can be seen parked along the road, where extras were reportedly being filmed for the backdrop of a scene.
Councillors narrowly approve the plan for an electricity substation which one said was a "monstrosity".

Councillors have narrowly approved the construction of an electricity substation which one described as a "monstrosity".
The substation in Runcorn, Cheshire, has been designed to provide power to about 850 homes on the Sandymoor South and Wharford Farm estates being built by government agency Homes England.
The agency’s application had been previously criticised with local politicians citing concerns that the substation would impose on existing homes in the area.

The developments attached to the substation are part of a wider scheme, which has seen about 1,500 homes either built or proposed.
However, the structure itself will stand in neighbouring Norton, close to existing homes that will not be powered by it, and lead to the loss of green space and trees.

Other councillors expressed concerns over the choice of site, which was designated as green space in the authority’
