I posted last week about building a NAS, and on friday I saw that the Jonsbo N4 case I had been eyeing for a while was in stock at a good price.

So now I am looking for a motherboard to base my system on, which seems to be a bit difficult.

I need an mATX or ITX board that can handle six SATA drives and also have an NVME slot for a boot drive.

Performance, I value power efficiency more than super high performance, and am on the fence between Open Media Vault or TrueNAS, I like the familiarity of Linux, but I do value the features of ZFS.

If I end up on TrueNAS I may run a VM in the hypervisor from time to time, mostly just for testing.

The NAS will not be an HTPC, but will serve media through SMB and possibly NFS later.

Cooling could be a bit of an issue as the case does not have a lot of space for a cooler

I am sorry if this the wrong community to ask in, while I have been on Lemmy for more than a year now, I am still learning my way around, and this seems like a relatively active community in a relevant area.

Right, on to my questions!

I am planning to build a NAS over the summer, at the moment all of my personal photos are stored on a single mechanical 2TB Seagate drive that is about 4 years old.

I have other media on another drive that is older but larger, all in all I expect that I have about 8TB of data that I care about.

I am working as a 365 admin, and have been the main Linux admin at my last place of work, I am also a hobby photographer in my spare time.

Currently, I am looking at using either the N4, the N3 or the N5 from Jonsbo, the N4 is a beautiful case!

I am thinking of running four 6TB drives in a softraid like this:

Linux > MDAM (raid 5) > LVM > ext4

My thinking is that I will probably need to migrate to new drives every X years or so, and with the LVM, I can just

After decades of using the standard mouse cursor in Windows, and loosing track of it more and more as displays and resolutions grew, I have finally changed it to black and increased the size of it one step.

I find it so much easier to locate my cursor across my 1440p monitors, it is just clearer what is going on.

In the office I use a turqoice cursor, and at home I use the black cursor, it is a slight annoyance to get used to it, but wow, it is fantastic!

I am about to take delivery of a new monitor, a Dell Ultrasharp U2724D, and I have a question about the audio....

I know this sounds confusing, but hear me out...

I built my computer a few years ago, sadly the audio broke a few days later, I first the rear output stopped working, then I used the front output and a few days later the cable I used caught my chairs armrest and my computer fell on it's side, during this the headphone jack broke.

I currently use the headphone out on my Philips monitor and run it to a generic noname analog amplifier to my Roth Audio OLi RA-1 speakers, this works fine, but there is an issue with the new monitor.

It does not have a headphone out, but a line out.

Would you expect a generic amp to work with that?

I bout the amp seven/eight years ago at the Swedish chain store Kjell & Company, it is labelled "Roxcore A32" and has two RCA inputs at the back.

I have no idea about this.

About 4 years old, there was a celebration at our vacation home, me and my cousin climbed in to a parked VW Beetle, we managed to disengage the handbrake and the car rolled down a hill into a vegatable garden. I can't remember how they got it out of there....

Skolbus som var jäkla kul, hade lyckats kommit över en kopia av huvudnyckeln till alla elevskåp, skåpen stod i en stor hall 3 på varandra 20 i varje rad. Jag kunde inte motstå att jäklas lite så jag såg till att bli utslängd från lektion 1 timme innan lunchen, denna timme öppnade jag alla skåp och vände alla böcker så att de lutade mot skåpdörren vilket innebar att om man öppna skåpet så skulle alla böcker ramla ut, ni kan nog tänka er vad som hände när det ringde ut till Lunch. Det var full rusch till skåpen typ 150 elever som öppnar skåpen samtidigt hihihihi. Uj vad ja garva när halva lunchen gick åt för att plocka ihop rätt böcker.

Hello, this is the start of what will hopefully be a series, of translated stories from the greatest Swedish forum thread I have ever read, it requires a bit of an introduction though.

First things first, dear mods, if you feel like this breaks the rules, let me know and I'll end the series. That being said, I plan on only making one post/week to not spam the community.

Ok, so what is this series?

Flashback is a huge Swedish forum which has existed on the internet for decades, they brand themselves as providing "real freedom of speach", you can discuss anything there, and people do.

These days Flashback is home to a lot of racism and sexism as people can post without a filter, I will not be reposting that here.

The thread I will be posting from is called "Dumma saker ni gjort", and is a thread that was active for years in the early 2000s, it contains posts about the idiotic things kids did when they were young.

Now as this is a Swedish forum the entire thread is in Swedish I will
