  • I'm watching it from a distance to see how things go. I'm a fan of the Dune books and the new movies as well, so the world would be interesting to explore. Unfortunately everything I've seen of it gives me the feeling that it should have been a single player game instead.

What they mentioned about the player built houses was the first thing I thought of when I heard you could build your own. There's going to be huge amounts of clutter everywhere you can build!

  • Ubuntu was my first when I started poking around with it. Not sure which version, but it was during the Unity era. Pop!_OS was the one I started using when I switched full time. I'm still using it on my main computer, but I'm also using Fedora, Ubuntu, NixOS, and Mint on other devices because I like variety!

  • Ah, okay. It's disappointing they've decided to go this route, I always liked getting it in my RSS reader every day!

  • Are you using the subscription? I used to subscribe to the RSS feed, but apparently they deleted that option.

    Happy First Contact Day!

    Happy First Contact Day!

In celebration of my favorite Star Trek holiday I decided to share my first contact with the franchise. I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I was pretty young when I saw a clip of TOS somewhere. Nobody in my family or friends watched or read any kind of science fiction, so it really stood out since it was quite a bit different than what I was accustomed to! I discovered what it was and began to learn a bit more about it.

Unfortunately my parents were never well off financially, so buying copies of a new show was off the table as was earning enough money to buy it myself! So I managed to "acquire" 10 or so episodes of the second season, which got me completely hooked on the show. After a year or so I was able to start earning some money and ended up buying the complete series.

Fast forward to today and I have everything up to 2016 and some of the shows after that too. I also introduced my siblings to it, and some of them have become fans as well! It's

  • Very true! Being early adopters of something new like this is definitely fun, but it has it's challenges!

  • Yeah, same! There's a few others I've experimented with posting in, and gotten the same response. I would keep going, but I feel like people are also going to avoid the community if it's just me talking to myself! So it's tough to find a good balance.

  • I've been using an older version of the ThinkCentre as a home theater system for a 3-4 years now without a problem.

  • That sounds fun too! I take some screenshots here and there too, there's some really great landscapes.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot unfortunately. I've got a community I moderate and try to post in when I have something to say, but there's so many others and not enough time in the day!

  • Your ESO screenshots look good! It has been my go-to for a while now, it's been fun. It's a shame the community on Lemmy isn't that busy, but I guess there's not a lot of players here yet.

  • I've been starting to get a few posts (besides me) showing up in [email protected], so that's good! I feel like there are a few too many communities (there are 7 general Star Trek communities, plus the more specific ones) for the amount of users currently here, but that's how it goes! The community founder decided not to continue, so I decided to take over rather than let it disappear.

Strange New Worlds rumored to release August 1st on SkyShowtime, no information from Paramount+ yet

    universeodon.com Trek Central (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image 🚨 BREAKING - Season 3 of #StarTrek: #StrangeNewWorlds To Arrive On SkyShowtime In August! SkyShowtime NL has confirmed, via a comment on their Official Facebook page, that Season 3 will arrive on August 1st. 🔷 No Date for Paramount+ has been shared yet.

    Trek Central (@TrekCentral@universeodon.com)

Apparently the date was leaked via a comment by SkyShowtime. There isn't an official release date for Paramount+, but if they do it like they have before, the US release date should be July 31st. That date also matches up with the Thursday release they've used for other shows as well.

Good news if true! August 2023 was a while ago.

    Star Trek Prop Information

I'm working on making up a little archive of informational videos about the props and production workflow of the Star Trek shows and movies, and I'm curious if anyone has any they particularly like.

To give you a better idea of what I'm thinking of, things like the recent Adam Savage video on the Voyager prototype and the bluescreen footage of the Enterprise model used for the flyby shots are what I'm going for. I'm not looking for the "DRAMA on the Star Trek Set!" and "Things You Never Noticed About TNG!!" clickbait that clutters YouTube or even the official BTS clips that Paramount puts out, just interesting videos made by fans and historians that provide information that we normally wouldn't see.

Websites with pictures and other information are very interesting as well!

As I make progress I'm planning to post the list here for everyone to access if interested. Also, if anyone else has already done something like this

  • Thanks! I've heard some mentions of it, but never dug into it much. I'll check it out.

  • Looks interesting! I saved it to look at later, I'm curious about the information on the Voyager prototype model. It might have to go in my archive of interesting Trek info.

What are your favorite episodes of Star Trek?

We've had quite a lot of Star Trek produced over the years! The last I had seen we're well over 900 episodes and counting. There have definitely been a lot of episodes that weren't that good, but we've also had quite a few episodes that are pretty great! What are your favorites?

I always have issues with narrowing things down, but these are the episodes that immediately spring to mind:

    • DS9 1x19 Duet
    • DS9 2x22 The Wire
    • DS9 7x10 It's Only a Paper Moon
    • TOS 2x06 The Doomsday Machine
    • TNG 3x03 The Survivors

After writing down those episodes and thinking about it a bit more, I also thought of these as well:

    • DS9 4x19 Hard Time
    • TNG 3x23 Sarek
    • DS9 6x19 In the Pale Moonlight
    • TOS 1x14 Balance of Terror
    • TNG 2x09 The Measure of a Man
    • DS9 4x02 The Visitor
    • TNG 4x02 Family

There are certainly more I haven't thought of so the list changes sometimes, but it's at least the list of the episodes that I remember most!

  • It is an enjoyable way to contribute to the OSM project! I mostly use JOSM or the iD editor for mapping, but when I only have my phone I'll pull out StreetComplete and do a few quests.

For beginners to mapping, it's a very easy way to contribute without the worry of messing up something!

  • That's the best part! Although in rare cases the flicker of recognition the other person has can mean you found an interesting person to talk to!

  • I have been known to do the same! It's a lot of fun to work Trek references into everyday conversation.

  • The "Well Hello!" he gives Weyoun 8 when he walks in is good too!

  • Weyoun 5 was my favorite. His scene where he plays dabo, drinks the poisoned kanar, and watches Sisko and Dukat argue is great.

Damar's first meeting with Weyoun 8 always gives me a laugh though!

  • It's still a lot of money for a mug, but compared to the $150-$300 they're selling for on eBay it's a great deal!

  • Is the wider section actually hollow? I was imagining they might just have a normal round shape inside due to it being more difficult to mold.

What is your favorite Trek speech/monologue?

I was watching TNG 4x21 - The Drumhead last night, and after hearing Picard's speech I was reminded of just how many interesting monologues we've gotten over the years.

Sisko's saint in paradise speech from The Maquis Part 2, his speech to the Changelings in The Emissary Part 2, Garak's stories in The Wire, Marritza's speech in Duet, (can you tell I like DS9?) Spock's words to Ston in Amok Time, Kirk's risk is our business speech in Return to Tomorrow, Picard's speech in The Measure of a Man, and many others have stuck with me over the years.

However, my favorite is from the end of the TOS episode A Taste of Armageddon.

All right. It's instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We're human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands, but we can stop it. We can admit that we're killers, but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes. Knowing that we won't kill today. - James T. Kirk

The quote works very well in the context of the episode, but I think it h

Is anyone looking forward to the new action figures?

As I'm sure many have seen, Master Replicas is going to be releasing a series of action figures similarly sized to the Playmates line from a while back.

While I know there are some people that have negative opinions on action figures and collecting in general, I'm looking forward to the chance to get a few! Out of the batch they've confirmed so far I would definitely like the Spock one, and maybe Boimler and Mariner depending on what else they decide to do in the future.

Open source real time strategy game 0 A.D. releases Alpha 27

    play0ad.com 0 A.D.: Empires Ascendant

0 A.D. is a free, open-source, historical Real Time Strategy (RTS) game currently under development by Wildfire Games, a global group of volunteer game developers.

0 A.D. just released a new version today with some interesting changes.

The features they mention on the news page:

    • Vulkan Renderer
    • Multiplayer Savegames
    • Tips & Tricks Page
    • Naval Overhaul
    • Observer Flares
    • New random maps: Foothills, Migration, Coast Range; New skirmish map: Isthmus of Corinth; and updated skirmish maps: Watering Holes, Sporades Islands
    • New and updated art

It's not mentioned in the features list, but I'm interested in the changes they've made to some of the civilizations. The Spartans, Romans, Athenians, and Macedonians all have had changes to make them more unique, which should make the gameplay a little more interesting. The new maps will be nice to try as well to give a bit more variety.

If you enjoy RTS games like Age of Empires and similar, it might be worth a try!
