  • It looks like they're SubG. The lock signal broadcasts on the buried line, and at least in the one manual I found, they can also lock all, lock all in a lot, and optionally lock singles via serial number (there's an inventory system). There's a directional handheld device that can be used within a couple of feet of an affected cart.

  • Hey, how do I do X

I didn't ask. I've been doing electronics for decades, I own enough equipment to listen to the signals and create them if they work like I suspect they do. It's a shower thought, I have no intention of doing it, well now that we're all spicy here about it, I kinda want to try as a proof of concept.

I've never seen it done, was just pondering

  • One of the proposed features is locking the cart if someone is about to walk out without paying.

The cost of the RF locking wheels isn't far off the price of a replacement cart. (Not to mention the investment in digging up the entire outline of the lot burying the line.

  • Yeah, I just watched a youtuber take apart a modern one. Found the maker and the manual for the system. Then watched some more people taking the system apart (including the one you linked)

    Neat stuff:

    • Looks like it's <9 Khz signals (7.2khz in the one I looked up), at that frequency, you can do a replay attack using your phones speaker from 0 distance.
    • the electronics in the wheels are potted, including the battery so they're disposable at EOL.
    • Apparently, the unlock signal is just an inverted lock signal. Easily detectable.
    • Their system has the ability to lock/unlock all carts, only the carts left in the parking lot overnight.
    • One of the features available is for them to identify and freeze a particular cart if it doesn't go through a checkout.
  • That's not the bar it used to be. You don't even need to worry about device drivers anymore.

Even the most difficult Linux installs now aren't that much more complicated than XP was.

Anything from Home Assistant / Sonarr / Radarr / ntfy / MQTT / LoRa would make my current basic savvy list.

I wonder what the specs are on the technology that disables shopping cart wheels

Could I make a little gun and just walk around through the parking lot and aisles of the supermarket and freeze all the carts in place?

  • It should be more appropriately labeled Junk Food. Everyone's trying to make it sound official and it just ends up more vague.

If we were eating Seafood, Chicken, Beef, Vegatables, Salads and Whole Grains, we'd live longer.

In the end, we need to stay away from non-naturally occurring carbs and refrain from mixing naturally occurring carbs with tons of fat/salt to make them more palatable.

Muffins, Doughnuts, French Toast, Submarine Sandwiches, Pizza, Pasta, all have to be super portion controlled, we we just don't seem to have that kind of willpower.

  • I don't care to argue politics with them, but outside of that subject, a lot of the .ml crowd have useful and helpful responses to other ares.

We all suffer from limited worldview. I'm not sure any of us do a particularly great job of seeing things from others perspectives.

  • Not really, I just looked at it, They're behind cloudflare so scraping them would be painful. Tried hitting the api and unhinging location and distance, they hard cap 250 results. Js is required to get the results. We could go zipcode by zipcode, in the browser with GPS coordinates (available for free) but there are 33k zipcodes and if anyone hits more than a few, cloudflare is going to robot check you.

  • That's a Lemmy feature. Hexbear and ML run how they want, world runs how they want. If you're pissing someone off some place enough to get banned, it's probably not the best place for you and best to leave them to their echo chamber. If you go wild, you can stand up your own instance and ban any instances you don't like.

If someone wants to make a safe-space echo-chamber, they can totally do it.

  • Yeah, it's turtles greed all-the-way down.

The commercial real estate market, of all things, should be able to self-regulate. A property sitting empty is losing them tax money, get too many shuttered businesses together and the property value drops.

Few things market-correct in these late-day capitalism hellscapes, but commercial property either corrects or gets bulldozed and bought by someone who corrects (and maybe rezones) it. Sometimes it just takes a decade or so.

Ranked Choice Vote Favorite Episodes. Pic up to 5!

I just tooled around on sites for the top-ranked Futurama episodes, and no two media outlets even had similar lists. I was wondering what it would look like with a small group of diehard fans here.

Once the votes stop coming in, (assuming they start) I'll tabulate the results.

Just give up to 5 episodes in a comment and we'll see if any of the different outlets got it right.

    **Update: **

    8 Voters

    25 Candidates

Assuming everyone's #1 is their best choice candidate and they decrease in order:

In a Ranked Choice Vote Single-Winner and Dual-Winner scenario, it takes 4 rounds and "Devils' Hands" takes first place. Luck of the Fryish takes second place with two.

I tried to recalculate it RCV style for a list of 3,4,5, but we don't have enough votes to make it work.

    In other voting calculations:

Jurassic (4), Godfellas(3), and Devils' hands(3) won with the most overall votes.

Jurassic Bark won with the highest number of top votes after 2 ro
