    EDIT: I'm not just gonna potentially do the propaganda work of a nation state. So I'll add my personal opinion here. It is very possible both these sources are influenced to pushing regime change, and not for the people, but their own self-interests. The numbers are extremely high, and many adjacent information don't line up with this narrative. Please use your own critical thinking.

As people will see the good stuff is elsewhere and anyone who cares enough will do this little extra step. (the philosophy of being active in good places to grow them)

    In other words. If this became a real thing, any respectable instance could just not federate with instances that don't have this process.

  • I think the way forward as the next line of defense is to vet accounts. This has been suggested before and I believe quite a few instances do it already. Similar thing on Mastodon.

    It doesn't have to be a strict process, to start with anyway, but at least require people to write a quick paragraph of why they want to join.

    It does mean more work, though. But I think if it became the norm, instances can be straight-up blocked who don't do have this process, even if many people use it. As people will see the good stuff is elsewhere and anyone who cares enough will do this little extra step. (the philosophy of being active in good places to grow them)

  • Elections alone are a total joke. Yes, they are important. But that's an action someone does once a year or so. There is so much more that can be done.

    Other strategy talk can get very loaded and philosophical and I won't pretend to know the answers. But I think a vital part will always remain to activate people. Critical mass is very powerful and all these people doing the bidding of a few are also just humans who can be pressured and potentially have their perspective changed.
