  • Given Iran's inability to hit warships, Iran's entire navy now sunk, and the vast majority of their missile launchers destroyed; getting a hit on an American carrier in the middle of a carrier taskforce is almost nill.

  • Uncharted 4 didn’t do too well on PC? Where are the PC versions of Uncharted 1-3

Release of 4 could have pushed a bunch of sales on a 1-3 PC collection as well! Release them at the same time, put the 1-3 collection on a discount and charge full price for 4. People will gobble up both. (I would put 4 on my wish list and buy the 1-3 collection in that situation, but that is still me giving them money for a two-decade-old game.)

  • Yeah, this seems absurdly too high. My guess is he was hosting it on AWS or one of the other premium cloud providers. Places like Digital Ocean are a fraction of AWS' cost.

I remember doing a pricing analysis at work, and every three months of AWS time would buy us a completely new set of in-house servers. Just three months! AWS was out at that point, leaving colocating, keeping it in-house, or services like Digital Ocean as the remaining reasonable options.

    Iran War Megathread

  • Yeah, I tend to not like Megathreads very much. Probably going to poke around this one, but I generally ignore them (or don't even see them due to my sorting).

  • hopes that Trump will chicken out

At least right now, seems to be having the opposite effect: More U.S. Fighter Aircraft Heading To Middle East which also reports: "France deployed Rafale fighters to the United Arab Emirates for protection of 'its naval and air bases against Iranian attacks'".

This is of course on top of OP's link about France sending a carrier too.

  • Is that true?

The source I linked is full of videos and other sources. Believe what you want.

Iran is attacking many of the gulf states directly and it is forcing countries to move against them, as we see in OP's link.

  • Iran is attacking much more than that in neighboring gulf countries:

Energy infrastructure and ports around the Gulf are increasingly on the receiving end of Iranian drones and missiles.

  • He stressed that the country has defence agreement with Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan and Iraq and it “will show solidary”.

Not sure exactly what France's goals are. But it was likely a poor choice on Iran's part to attack Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan, and Iraq.

  • 'Never trust the client', an adage that modern game developers have apparently forgotten. The only thing one can ultimately trust is the server. Anything client-side, beyond keeping honest people honest, is doomed to failure.

Regular (ie, not kernel-level) anti-cheat is as far as it needs to go. Anything delving past that, such as into kernels, is dumb and an increasing level of security risk for the consumer.

  • Probably. But also just wider Linux adoption. Over 8% of English-speaking Steam users are on Linux now. That number is already at a point where it makes sense to cater to them. Who doesn't want 8% more sales? Numbers much smaller than that drive quarterly decisions.

(The large disparity between English speaking and not is the Chinese market. Linux has near 0% adoption there. The dip in the last month, for example, corresponds to a single-month doubling of the number of Chinese users in the Steam stats; which also suggests major measurement errors coming out of China.)

  • I don't believe there is a viable path for kernel-level anti-cheat on Linux (thank god). What most developers have done is enable normal anti-cheats on Linux, even if they use kernel-level ones on Windows. This is the path they seem to be going down.

Ever since CrowdStrike, I'm a bit amazed Microsoft hasn't taken a hard stance on the gaping security hole that is kernel-level anti-cheat. It's bonkers such is expected or even allowed just to play a game.

  • I'm looking forward to it. Not because I will buy more EA games, but because it will remove one of the few barriers left for even wider Linux adoption.

  • Absolutely. Parents cannot parent from the dark. It is imperative they're aware of medical and mental conditions their children are grappling with so proper care can be taken.

  • Parents generally have the right to know important facts about their children so they can parent well.

  • Microsoft locked all the channels in that discord within the last few hours.

Before that, every channel was Microslop nonstop. Apparently even giving them feedback (in the feedback channel) about the product is no longer allowed. Microsoft cannot handle the fact they dish out slop.

  • The law does not require photo ID uploads or facial recognition, with users instead simply self-reporting their age

That part is good at least. It also makes the California law an exercise in wasting everyone's time and money.
