UK petition to ban harvesting of behavioural metadata for ads

Please sign this petition to get this topic discussed by the UK government.

  • Great idea! Two things

    • E2EE is a default in privacy by design so consider CryptPad for docs instead
    • change the name. Inline Style is terrible (sorry but to a native English speaker it sounds lame). How about just Inline?

    Separate file for navbar?

lemmy.ml Separate navbar file - Lemmy

Anyone know if you can have a separate HTML file for the navbar and link to it from all the page files? Updating the navbar in each page to ensure consistency is a pain!

Post is in the link - simplest method possible please: my web dev skills are weak!

  • It was IP6 issues!

My hosting provider had not provided the IP6 address, so I didn't input it to the DNS records. After a month of back and forth they finally coughed up this information, and I've added it to the records, and everything works.

I've no idea why they didn't give it to me in the first place!

Anyone know why a static site wouldn't load with a VPN on?

My web hosting company can't explain this.

My website is old school static, just HTML, CSS and js files. Nothing fancy.

No VPN, it loads fine. With VPN (various, but in my case Mullvad) it won't load. I get this screenshot. All other sites load fine with that vpn!

  • Thank you - that fstab directory doesn't seem to exist in the etc directory. Or maybe I just cannot see it. I tried but permissions seem to be a problem, even though I'm signed in as the admin user and used sudo.

Do you know how I can create that directory? Is it these instructions https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/how-to-mount-and-unmount-drives-on-linux/ ?

Anyone know why this happens? Drive dismounts

I'm running Mint, and have an external USB drive plugged in. It is not powered - it gets its power from the mini-PC.

Occasionally I get this message and I've no idea why. It might be after rebooting the machine but I'm not sure (sorry).

The only thing I did with the drive is rename it (to "1tbDrive"). Could that be the problem? (I did that in the Disks application).

  • I thought that I would need Yunohost to take care of all the web hosting stuff in the back ground...? Are you saying to just push files into the VPS barebones, or into Yunohosts website app shell? (Sorry I'm new to VPS stuff).

And how would you push the files from Codeberg? what is the method?

  • Does anyone know if you can deploy files to Yunohost using Git? Or via a url from a git repository?

I'd like to host a website using Yunohost, and push the files to it from Codeberg.

  • good points, well written.

On the conspiracy point: Would it help to distinguish between standard use of micro-targeting (flooding the zone with shit and targeting swing voters) and foreign gov interference?

I find both to be shocking, but perhaps the latter is more conspiracy like. And the latter requires the misuse of the RTB system (e.g. the Russian military paying to pose as advertisers to get access to the RTB data), whereas the former is just an ugly byproduct of using the RTB system legally.

  • The site is hosting by a hosting company - and they assure me that the cert is fine.

If I was self hosting I'd expect these problems, but not with a hosting company.

The only difference with this company is that they do not use any big tech infrastructure - they have their own servers. I wonder if big tech has something they don't.....?

  • lol you're right up there with the person suggesting doxxing just to show them it can be done...!

Having said that I did read about someone who tried to locate themselves using publically findable information, and they managed it. It freaked them out a bit, so to do it to someone else would be wild.

  • It certainly make me feel safer against big tech snooping. Is obscuring your IP address not useful? I genuinely want to hear the arguments for and against VPNs. And if they're not effective what are better ways we can protect ourselves?

Privacy is a team sport - how do we get more people to play?

This is an open question on how to get the masses to care...

Unfortunately, if other people don't protect their privacy it affects those who do, because we're all connected (e.g. other family members, friends). So it presents a problem of how do you get people who don't care, to care?

I started the Rebel Tech Alliance nonprofit to try to help with this, but we're still really struggling to convert people who have never thought about this.

(BTW you might need to refresh our website a few times to get it to load - no idea why... It does have an SSL cert!)

So I hope we can have a useful discussion here - privacy is a team sport, how do we get more people to play?

I thought people here might like to join this if you want to see what other privacy folk are talking about. I think it originated on Nostr.

    How can we avoid fingerprinting?

I've been worried about this since Google switched to it in Feb this year.

Apparently the short answer is "you can't". Which is terrifying. Surely some clever peeps out there can find a way round it (for normies)?

Development of the ActivityPub protocol - data portability and persistent ID

I'm trying to find out where the development is at right now for ActivityPub, specifically about data (posts) portability, and persistent IDs.

For the former I think that's fairly self-explanatory, I'm just trying to get a flavour of if it's a priority, who's working on it, what the anticipated timeline is etc. It's a clear advantage that ATproto has, so are we trying to close the gap?

By the latter I mean is there work happening to work towards us being able to have one ID that can be used to log in to any fediverse network (as per nostr)? This approach makes so much sense to me - is it even possible?

The link here to W3.org doesn't seem that up to date - but I'm not that knowledgable so may have misinterpreted that site. So I'm looking for education on this subject 😊

Grant funding for helping people get away from big tech

    Hi there fediverse people!

I'm starting a non-profit to help people get away from big tech and use alternatives. Besides providing info via a website we'll put on events, and we're also planning to start a certification service so companies can prove they don't support the surveillance business model.

Does anyone know of any grant funding, either UK or EU, that might help with this?

Could not upvote on another instance

I've joined Lemmy.ml. Someone sent me a link to a video posted on Feddit.nl - I thought I could log in and upvote/comment using my Lemmy.ml credentials. Wrong!

Why is this? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm relatively new to the fediverse. But I thought that they were all federated so you can interact with all instances??!
