Also, don't forget, the US attempts to cancel elections due to being in the middle of a war, despite extensive historical precedent of still holding elections during wartime.
Both of these countries are killing their own civilian population. But now one of them is also killing the other country's population as well. Probably soon to be joined by the other doing the same in return.
Let me just be the anarchist in the room and say fuck both of these countries. Fuck every country. We shouldn't have countries. And we especially shouldn't have countries that kill people, no matter which side of an imaginary line they're killing people on.
it being among my first wishes to see some plan adopted by which slavery in this Country may be abolished by slow, sure, & imperceptable degrees
Honestly, I could see this as being better than the alternative -- better than having a Civil War. Especially if it was started during Washington's time.
Say, just pass a law that says no new slaves can be imported and anyone born after the law passes is not born a slave, no matter the status of their parents. Then, (hopefully) slave owners don't get all violent over losing their 'property', and slavery is slowly abolished in the country over the course of a generation.
Is it as good as complete, total, and immediate abolishment of slavery? Hell no. But if it could have ended slavery without a war that killed millions, maybe it's worth it. Especially if it was done in Washington's time, such that slavery would already be essentially over by the time the Civil War would have otherwise started. So, on the balance, less people suffering under slavery overall. Pragmatism?
Oh well, who are we kidding? The slave owners would never have allowed such a law to stand, and they'd start a different Civil War about it if nothing else worked.
kings and dukes had to go to battle themselves and risk their own lives.
Eh ... though during some times in some parts, every effort would be made to capture the king or duke alive, and then ransom him back for either political considerations or money. 'The feudal Middle Ages' covers a broad spectrum of time, locations, and cultures ... but in a lot of those places, nobility riding into battle could rest relatively easy knowing that they had a much higher chance of surviving the battle than the ordinary foot soldiers around them, even if defeated.
(Of course, that wasn't universal, though. There definitely were times, places, and situations where the nobility could expect to be tortured and killed if defeated and captured. And there was always the chance of simply being very unlucky and catching a stray arrow or being trampled by a frightened horse or something.)
Recently, my girlfriend (who I successfully migrated to Kubuntu) was complaining about ads on youtube, so I wanted to install Brave for her, since that works well as a chromium-based browser but still doesn't show ads. (I've had issues trying to play youtube on Firefox with adblocker, probably because Google's trying to discourage anything other than Chrome.)
Brave was available in the app store, and installed as a Snap. And it was fine. It installed fine, it works fine, no issues. Maybe it's not the most efficient way to do things, and there certainly are issues with the snap system. But ... it's not the devil, and it's not the end of the world.
Great ... two new wars started in one day. Just what the world needed, right?
