  • Fair enough lol. Not all 3D gaming obviously (I mean they aren't First person shooters, like most of your examples), but effectively the Action, Adventure, Platforming, etc angle (which makes up a fairly massive chunk of games today).

What I'm talking about is the fundamental gameplay of both. Online Multiplayer was revolutionary, but it wasn't really a fundamental change to the gameplay itself (Like with Marathon introducing mouse control)

It's interesting that you mention Tomb Raider though because that's a perfect comparison. It was a fairly indicative of the industry as a whole with its stiff controls, static cameras, and dodgy combat.

Mario 64 brought a full range of movement and action to games. It was really the first 3D game where just moving was fun (which is why they started the game in a peaceful courtyard, they wanted you to just have a fuck about). It also brought the user controllable camera to games (It hasn't aged well, but that camera system was amazing when it came out). Also, while it didn't invent the Hub world (it had been used in 2D games) it pretty much set the standard for it.

OoT built on Mario64 with two major bits of gameplay. Target lock-on (Then called "Z-Targeting") and contextual buttons. Both of which are just so fundamental to games these days it just feels obvious. More relevant back then (but not now), it created the template for how you could faithfully transition a series from 2D to 3D while perfectly maintaining the feel of the 2D series.

Now, neither of those things alone would justify it being in my Top 5. The fact that they're both so aggressively fun and well made does that.

  • Ocarina of Time

Yeah I know. Cliche as fuck. But for those who weren't around when It came out, it's really hard to describe just how absurdly revolutionary OoT was. Between it and Mario 64 (another Top 5 game for me), you essentially had the foundations of 3D gaming that are still used today.

But besides that...it's an amazing game that I'm still replaying nearly 30 years later. Ever single complaint I have about this game is a tiny issue that has been solved in other versions (like binding the Iron Boots to the C button).

  • Well, sure I'd like to give it a look

  • Message Boards are fundamentally different and I don't see a lot of value in federating them considering the big message board platform (phpBB) has 25 years of development and is GPL.

Message Boards are more elaborate versions of subreddits/communities. In all of those instances there is still a single entity that has "all the power in the forum". You can join another lemmy server, but the admin of that community is still the admin, and the entity controlling the server that community is on likewise, controls the community.

I guess you could have a universal account that could be used across different message boards, but Personally I'd hate that.

  • Locked

    both pretty extreme

  • And you missed the entire point. Centrism isn't about trying to find a perfect middle ground to every individual subject.

Of course there will be centrists that support Israel carpet bombing everything. There are other centrists that don't support them. There are some that will support them with conditions. I know someone who is broadly centrist who thinks Israel should be dissolved entirely.

    It's not a fucking hivemind.

  • Locked

    both pretty extreme

  • Centrists don't sit in the middle of every issue or make an exact 50/50 compromise on everything.

I seriously don't understand how fucking difficult this is to understand. It's why I largely ignore political discussions on Reddit/Lemmy/all social media.

I don't look at one person saying "Murdering 5 year olds is bad", look at another person saying "Murdering 5 year olds is good!" and try to find a way where both are right.

  • LiveTV refers to a PlutoTV like service for Plex. There are a lot of amazing channels, but the big gain for me is having broadcast news networks.

FinAmp really isnt up to PlexAmp yet. PlexAmps "guestdj" mode is really awesome and it still doesn't have a Carplay App which kills it right there for me.

  • I will spend an entire weekend ricing my desktop in just the right way.

Then I'll notice that one of my main apps doesn't adhere to the theming i've designed, or that

    <insert random condition here>

will completely break my theming because

    <insert weird OS quirk here>

, or If I change my wallpaper it will make my entire theme look like shit, or that my cool theme makes font unreadable on one app because it renders shit weird, or that I completely overlooked this one aspect of my workflow that my cool design fucks with.

Then I'll just say fuck it and go back to using standard Gnome.

There's an extension that lets me close and open windows with the Matrix Code Rain so I can pretend I'm cool n shit.

  • For me?

    • Remote Play (I've never been able to get it to consistently work on every device with Jellyfin)
    • PlexAmp is awesome
    • LiveTV
    • IPTV
    • Way better clients
    • Numerous small little issues.
  • Was a little worried from the headline that it was being moved to another subscription tier.

I've owned a Plex Pass Lifetime subscription since it's basically been available. I've honestly forgotten Remote Streaming was a free service at this point.

  • At the risk of going against the flow here....no?

I keep seeing Lemmy posts talking about how Reddit is going hard fascist...but half the posts on /r/all are about Trump being a rapist, or celebrating CyberTruck arson, or Luigi memes, etc.

I deleted my Reddit account during the third-party app bullshit and exclusively view it from the old site or OpenArtemis, so I'm not exactly going to defend them, but it isn't nearly as bad as people on here claim it is.

  • So, any distro to any other distro?

    • Installs Fedora Silverblue
    • Rebases to Bazzite

    Jobs done chief!

  • This keeps getting brought up, but the reality is that there is nothing special about SteamOS 3. If people want a SteamOS-like OS (Immutable, Steam/Proton integrated, Steam Big Picture as Primary interface), then it already exists. Chimera, Bazzite, probably others. The only thing Valve could realistically improve on is the installation experience.

SteamOS's only real advantage is that it is hardware restricted. Valve is able to test against a narrow field of hardware and insure a high degree of stability because of it.

  • The Nvidia open-source driver situation has been improving. Supposedly Valve has been working with them on it alongside their ARM support.

You can also try your hand with the closed source drivers but ymmv.

  • I'm tossing in another vote for Fedora. It's honestly about the closest you'll get to "Standard Linux".

It's one of the most bleeding-edge distros while still being very stable and secure (Rolling Releases are more up-to-date but I've had enough issues with them). Traditionally a Gnome-First Distro but the word is that the next release will promote KDE alongside Gnome (That said KDE is already great on it).

  • Okay how can you be Morrowind inspi-watches trailer well fuck.

Not that I'm complaining. Morrowind has been my number one open world RPG to this day. Nothing has come close to scratching that itch.

  • I fucking hope they get something out of it.

If a business does an ethical thing and they benefit, it could encourage other businesses to also engage in said ethical thing.

  • IIRC Most major anti-cheat platforms not using kernel -level support linux these days. The SteamDeck forced their hand.

The problem is the developers. They have the ability to specifically block Linux and that's only going to change once enough people use it. As for kernel level that's an entirely different can of worms and I'm fine just not playing those games.
