Bit of a mess, kinda depressed, and going through a gender identity crisis :3

(Ongoing issues, brain pls fix)

  • I bought an HP Envy, one of these convertible laptop thingies, when I didn't know any better. The hinge broke about a month after the warranty expired. Repair costs (at a local repair shop, but still) were like 200€ because apparently I had to buy a whole new top cover for the damn repair to work

Anyways, I'm gonna buy a Framework laptop next because fuck going through that again

  • Personally, instead of Tmux, I'd recommend trying Zellij. I started with Zellij right out of the gate, but a friend of mine who dislikes Tmux a lot quite enjoyed Zellij, so I assume it's somewhat better.

  • Of course I can't entirely generalize from this, however my 2080Ti worked perfectly out of the box on EndeavourOS. Game performance is also mostly similar to my Windows install - if they ran well, they still do, and if they ran badly, then the same goes for that as well.

  • Honestly, I'd say you shouldn't do that prompt method. The auto type is genuinely great for the use cases which Excel is supposed to be used for, from someone managing their household finances to charting the growth of a business.

By all means, it absolutely should make assumptions about your data by default, as that's incredibly convenient for the average user. You can always change the type of a cell afterwards if what you're doing is special.

  • That is not what it was made for. It was made to do shenanigans with values like doing math on them and plotting graphs. If you merely want data storage, use a table. I agree, a database is overkill for most things, but that doesn't change the fact that Excel is the wrong tool for the job. Maybe if they added a table mode where it's basically just a frontend for a csv it'd work, but right now I'd still say it's better to use a scalpel than a hammer, even if scissors do the trick just fine.

  • I've never used Access personally, so I don't know if it's any good or not, I'm just frustrated by people using spreadsheets for data storage.

  • This isn't a fix. Excel wasn't meant for this. While I do understand it's convenient as a database, unless you're doing something unimportant and small you just really should use something proper. And even now that this "problem" is gone, I am certain there are still more things that cause trouble. You can not satisfy everyone and Excel was just... not made for gene info storage.

Even if you don't want to use stuff that isn't Microsoft Office, that comes with Microsoft Access, which is a proper database management system. It's literally in the same software package, so why do people refuse to use it?

  • There are a few. Would you mind sharing a link to the one you're using?

  • Yes and no. I've seen people roughly port smaller games over in a single weekend. I'd probably take a guess of about 1-2 weeks, not multiple months. Godot is surprisingly similar. Obviously it's not all gonna be best practice, but since it also supports c#, you can more or less just copy and paste the code and slowly sift through compiler errors, replacing old Unity stuff with new Godot stuff. It's a pain, but not quite as much as you'd expect

Take a read for yourself: Brian Bucklew porting Caves of Qud from Unity to Godot

  • Blåhaj is clearly not enjoying it :c

  • With this kind of behavior it's just a self-fulfilling prophecy. Please change and grow as a person, alright? Love yourself and let others love you.

  • Any reason not to just use yay? That's an alias for yay -Syu, which in and of itself, at least if I understood it correctly, is basically just pacman -Syu and from what I've read on the arch wiki -Sy is heavily discouraged.

  • I think that would just be illegal, although I am not certain... maybe it's not

What I'd be more worried about personally is metadata. Sure, they might not know what you sent, but they know who you sent it to and when. The data is generally just gonna be "Oh, this person texts their mum every morning", but Meta already provided message contents in an abortion case, so what if someone is accused of having an abortion (the fact that you can be "accused" of that now in the US is still fucked up imo, but that's besides the point) and then Meta provides info that this teenager sent WhatsApp messages to a medical professional who can perform abortions. That would obviously not work as well as the contents themselves, but it does have value to the legal case.

In the end none of us have anything to hide... until we suddenly do

I know this wasn't argued here, but I'd like to make it clear anyways: You don't have to deal drugs or be a hired killer to want privacy. There are a bunch of reasons you could get in trouble with the government which fall into morally ambiguous areas. And sometimes we just don't want our entire life being analyzed to have an algorithm decide what advertisement is the most effective in getting us to click on it.

  • As this is my personal strategy as well, I would like to add that your sample size is now 2, with a 100% success rate :3

Although for me personally I don't have to retrain that quickly. My resistance to motion sickness certainly gets weaker over time, but I seem to have reached some kind of baseline, compared to my previous state, where about five minutes could give me an awful headache, while now I can take it for a bit longer, even after not being in VR for a month or two.

Speaking of, we need more VR games. I'd love to play more of them, but nothing new is really big and exciting or anything, which is how these long breaks even happen.

  • Oh, that reminds me, I was pretty curious about the fact that there are men's and women's backpacks, and apparently women's backpacks are actually kinda different from men's backpacks

Here, from the Jack Wolfskin website (I know, different brand, but I assume it's similar):

Backpacks & Bags What’s the difference between women’s and men’s backpacks?

All of our women’s pack models have a smaller capacity than the corresponding men’s models, as women usually have a shorter back. In addition, our women’s packs have different attributes, depending on the intended use:

    Alpine, tour and cycling packs:

Shoulder straps have a more acute angle in the neck area
Shoulder straps have a narrower curvature and are set wider
        Shorter shoulder straps
        Shorter overall length
        Shorter waist belt (if included)

    Trekking packs:

Shoulder straps have a more acute angle in the neck area
Shoulder straps have a narrower curvature and are set wider
        Shorter and narrower shoulder straps
SOFTNECK padding extends around the edges of the shoulder straps (more comfort when wearing a sleeveless top or vest)
        Shorter overall length
Shorter, wider and more steeply angled waist belt wings

It's based on averages though, so a tall woman with a wider build would probably have a better time with a men's backpack and the same goes the other way around. You just gotta know what's right for you, because they are actually different. So this likely isn't actually based on the color of the backpack, although if it is only available in pink and other red-ish tones, that is obviously stupid.

  • Oh yeah, absolutely. As I said, this also just personally bugs me since, while the problem usually solved via context, there are moments where that just doesn't work. That's why I originally even thought of this idea.

I'm honestly not even certain anymore, why I put that little bit about those people at the start... I think I'll just edit it out to, ironically in this case, alleviate confusion

  • Thank you to all of you for the great advice <3

I think for now I'll get a Moonlander, or at least something similar, and in the (very) long run, if I'm not satisfied or it doesn't suit all my needs, invest in a soldering kit and a 3D printer to start testing out more and more smaller diy style keyboards (depending on how many I'll test that's probably cheaper, tinkering is fun, and I'll probably find other uses for those as well) to see what fits me best, or what I could use as a secondary option.

But for now, I'll just get a nice base that will certainly work. Experimentation comes later. Thank you all. I'll be sure to at least have a good look at all the keyboards recommended here, and make a list of my favorite ones for long-term experimentation, but at the time I just don't quite have the money for more than one keyboard, even if many of them seem very cool (;・∀・)

  • Alright, now I'm intrigued

What about game support though? I've heard Proton/Wine stuff in general is a bit less functional on Wayland/Hyprland and with how on the edge it is for some games, I'm not in the mood to give more functionality up for better aesthetics

  • I mean, I'm using btrfs and I assume everything's fine? Didn't run into any issues so far, apart from when I accidentally forgot to put my swap file into its own subvolume and timeshift didn't let me do backups anymore for a bit until I fixed that, but as far as I know there's an option in the installer where it does all that for you, I just forgot to tick the box

  • I think it's mostly a problem with rolling updates. Things like Deep Rock Galactic worked perfectly fine for a while and then suddenly the initial screen was entirely black for whatever reason, every time I tried to start it. The game is still playable though, so it's mostly a minor inconvenience. Also, with Team Fortress 2 I have to first switch on Proton, then swap back to native, because it doesn't start at all with proton and if I try to just start it without swapping back and forth, it turns off both my side monitors and changes the middle one's aspect ratio to 5:2 for whatever inexplicable reason. That happened after an update as well. Only one game is entirely broken so far, the rest is just minor inconveniences and I'm waiting for new updates to maybe fix them again.

So yeah, it's mostly fine :3
