The Dallas Mavericks are—in every way, shape, and form—down bad.
In addition to fan ire and economic fallout following the trade of superstar Luka Doncic, the team's roster is littered with injuries at the minute, so much so there are concerns they might have to forfeit games if circumstances fall a certain way. There are ways of getting around that; for example, the team could dress and activate an injured player who would never come off the bench. But, with just about $50,000 of room under the first apron hard cap, the front office doesn't have the space to sign anyone new right now, which is also a problem.
Seemingly to that effect, the team has actually asked

It likely doesn't. You'd never rule anything out in the NBA, but it also is clear that both the Suns and Durant are contemplating a future apart.
The Suns have a failing and hugely expensive big three, and that's untenable in the apron era. Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker will make a combined $150 million next season, the most expensive trio in the league, and they're not working together.
Beal has a no-trade clause, and he made it very clear he doesn't intend to waive it. Booker is deemed untouchable and doesn't want to leave. That leaves the options as status quo or trading Durant as part of a roster restructurin

There was an irony to this. When Butler first came to the Heat in summer 2019, Butler was in Riley's office celebrating the signing of the four-year, $142 million deal that landed him in Miami. The two men cracked open a bottle of Screaming Eagle cabernet from Riley's personally curated wine cellar inside the Heat offices. Riley was telling stories, and he asked Butler who the most talented player he

Despite a flurry of reporting that teams around the NBA are checking in with the Phoenix Suns regarding a potential Kevin Durant trade, it appears his options have been whittled down to two possibilities, as ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Wednesday's NBA Today—staying with the Suns or being traded to the Miami Heat in exchange for Jimmy Buler.
"If I had to guess right now—admitting that things are changing—I would say that he either stays in Phoenix or he's on the Miami Heat by tomorrow afternoon," Windhorst noted.

Seem like another mega trade is in the works if this is the case. Been a ton of smoke on this potential trade and the Warriors pivoting from a Chicago trade too.

The Suns traded their 2031 second-round draft pick to the Hornets as part of this week's Richards trade. Let's pause for just a moment to note that since Mat Ishbia acquired controlling ownership in the Suns on trade deadline day in 2023, and then immediately acquired Durant, he now has overseen the trade of eight consecutive years of the Suns' second-round picks (2023 to 2031).
Since Ishbia arrived, the Suns have also traded four first-round picks and five first-round pick swaps. If that math doesn't look quite correct, note the Suns found a way to trade two swaps on their 2026 first-rounder. (It might be the most complicated pick ma
Western Conference executives believe the NBA could eliminate conferences when the league expands
Could this season see an early blockbuster? Should the league abolish conferences? Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst take their weekly pulse of the league.

As West coaches and executives grow exasperated looking at what records might qualify for the postseason in the East, they're floating a concept. The NBA is slowly moving toward expansion, perhaps 2-3 years from now, with Seattle and Las Vegas as the top candidates. If that happens, there will potentially be a battle between the Mississippi River teams (the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans) to be the "fortunate" one to move East to balance the conferences at 16 clubs apiece.
Instead of dealing with that thorny competition, West executives told ESPN they believe both issues can be corrected by dropping conferences altogethe
