Cross-posted from "1.4.30 Released" by @[email protected] in [email protected]

1.4.30

This release incorporates several feature requests, lots of bugfixes, and the new ability to open posts and comment threads in modals. The changelog doesn't do the number of changes justice, and I've only highlighted the noticeable aspects.

Thank you to @[email protected], @[email protected], and @[email protected] for submitting bugs I was able to fix. Additional thank you to @[email protected] for running the beta versions and reporting all new bugs.

How do I block users from an instance of my choice?

I keep seeing people ask for this. There are basically only two ways, neither of which are terribly easy unless you are willing to switch to a Lemmy alternative and then it can be a breeze with just a couple of button clicks.

First, note that on base Lemmy, it basically cannot be done, short of either spinning up your own instance or trying to do some advanced programming with spamblock filtering rules (that is likely to mess up the pages in some way). There is a related feature though - in User -> Settings -> Blocks -> scroll waaay down -> Block instance - except that unlike blocking a community or a user, this does not actually "block an instance", and instead merely (& misleadingly?) hides the communities on those instances. You will still see comments from those users, they can still downvote you, and ping your notifications, etc.

About the only thing the above approach offers beyond blocking those communities individually is that if ever new communities were to be made

Why do some communities have @ and some are just their names?

Why YSK: Because some people may want to use old reddit's interface and might be used to it's look. To choose the instance, put a /[instance name] after that url, or use the option given by the site itself

edit: apparently the original site where this came from is https://mlmym.org/ and this is the github repository https://github.com/rystaf/mlmym

Lemmy - Quick Guide

Go to lemm.ee/lemmy.world/many other instances and register. Verify your email. The mail might be delayed or land in spam. Login and browse, posts, comments, upvotes, etc are similar to Reddit. Use "Top Day" or "New" to find recent content. Note: Set a unique password.

Lemmy Instances Lemmy websites function like individual Reddit clones. Lemmy’s tech is free and open-source, but regular users should stick with established instances like lemm.ee. Each instance has its own storage for posts and users.

Lemmy Federation Different Lemmy instances collaborate and share data - all instances display identical content. You can even interact with content on instances that are currently offline.

Navigating To interact with users or communities from other instances, use the search bar on your home instance. For communities, use "![community-name]@[instance-name]", for users "@[user-name]@[instance-name]". Always sh

Having trouble finding communities? Here's some tips.

I just joined the NZ lemmy here, because Lemmy.world was slow. This instance is much faster for me, but when searching for communities, many that I was subscribed to with my lemmyworld account didn't show in the search results.

I fixed this by manually finding it in the address bar, like this:

https://lemmy.nz/c/[email protected]

And this will work for all communities, just replacing the appropriate parts:

https://lemmy.nz/c/[communityname]@[instancename]

Then you can subscribe and it will show in your 'Subscribed to communities' on the main page. (sometimes I have to refresh for all to show up).

This might be a known issue at the moment, but I've only been on Lemmy for like 3 days so idk
