Man Utd step up manager search in response to Chelsea developments
With Erik ten Hag’s position tenuous, United have reached out to Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank, Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino
Manchester United have been forced to expedite their managerial contingency plans in the wake of Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from Chelsea with the two clubs holding an interest in some of the same targets.
Chelsea have narrowed their search for Pochettino’s successor to four coaches, with Enzo Maresca, Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank and an unnamed candidate all making the club’s shortlist.
With Chelsea hoping to be in a position to make an appointment by the start of next month, if not earlier, as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart work around the clock to secure a new manager, the situation has forced United’s hand to some extent.
United maintain that they have yet to make a final decision on the future of Erik ten Hag but his position appears increasingly untenable and it is understood that the club have been sounding out potential replacements in the event they sack the Dutchman after Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.

The Erik ten Hag secrets that set the standard at Manchester United
Dutchman's attention to detail has been evident throughout pre-season, right down to which colour socks players are asked to wear
To give you an idea of how fastidious Erik ten Hag can be, the Manchester United manager has been known to request that the foam coverings on microphones are removed before press conferences or interviews. He finds them distracting and Ten Hag, as anyone who has worked with him or crossed his path will know, does not do distraction.
United’s players and staff were left in no doubt on the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia last summer who was in charge and how exacting the manager’s demands could be and it has been no different 12 months on in the United States as they prepare for his all important second season in charge.
Listening to stories about the level of control Ten Hag exerts about everything from the colour of socks that should be worn on a particular day to the bespoke nutritional plans of every individual player while in America, it is hard not to recall the contrast with their tour here under another Dutch manager in 2014.
