Get Up, Stand Up (1973) - Bob Marley & The Wailers

[Verse 3: Peter Tosh]

  1. We're sick and tired of your ism and schism game
  2. Die and go to heaven in Jesus' name, Lord
  3. We know and we understand
  4. Almighty God is a living man
  5. You can fool some people sometimes
  6. But you can't fool all the people all the time
  7. So now we see the light
  8. (What you gonna do?)
  9. We going to stand up for our right
  10. (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

Annotation:

We (the oppressed) are tired of all the philosophies and religions that only serve to divide people.

“Schism” is a division or a split, usually between groups belonging to a religious denomination (subgroup).

“Ism” is basically ideologies ending with -ism, like racism, capitalism, Nazism, nationalism, communism. Isms are not very popular in the Rastafari movement, as they separate, divide and put people in different groups. Hence ism-schism.

Written in response to the social and political unrest in Jamaica, “Get Up, Stand Up” is a call to stand up for the voiceless and all those denied basic

2Pac - Changes

[Verse 1: 2Pac]

  1. It's time to fight back," that's what Huey said
  2. Two shots in the dark, now Huey's dead

Annotation:

Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panthers, was shot dead by a drug dealer in Oakland in 1989 at the age of 47.

Reports say there were three shots.

2Pac’s parents were active members of the Black Panther Party. Also refers to the FBI’s history of targeting and monitoring Black and other supposed revolutionary figureheads and implementing strategies to eliminate them by smearing their public image—or worse, assassinating them. You only have to look at their sister organisation the CIA, who have repeatedly instigated coups and assassinations of International leaders.

[Verse 3: 2Pac & Talent]

  1. And still I see no changes, can't a brother get a little peace?
  2. It's war on the streets and the war in the Middle East (Ooh, yeah)
  3. Instead of war on poverty
  4. They got a war on drugs so the police can bother me
  5. And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have

Eminem - White America

[Intro]

  1. (The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only, no parking)
  2. America! Ha ha ha! We love you
  3. How many people are proud to be citizens
  4. Of this beautiful country of ours, the stripes and the stars
  5. For the rights that men have died for to protect?
  6. The women and men who have broke their necks
  7. For the freedom of speech the United States government has sworn to uphold… or so we're told
  8. (Yo, I want everybody to listen to the words of this song)

Annotation:

Eminem released this album when the “War on Terror” was in full swing and patriotism was high. A lot of the rhetoric used to invade Afghanistan and Iraq was that terrorists attacked because they hated freedom, and that soldiers were dying to protect freedom.

Not only does this view fall badly to scrutiny, but raving about freedom is quite absurd when the country was simultaneously attempting to censor artists such as Eminem.

Note: Em uses iambic meter in this intro, that is, patte

Lil Wayne - God Bless Amerika (Official Music Video)

[Chorus]

  1. God bless Amerika
  2. This ole' godless Amerika
  3. I heard tomorrow ain't promised today
  4. The end of time is like a hour away, damn

[Verse 2]

  1. Military-minded, lost and can't find it
  2. The stars on the flag are never shinin'
  3. Uh, I saw a butterfly in Hell today
  4. Will I die or go to jail today?
  5. 'Cause I live by the sword and die by the sword
  6. Heard police was lookin' for me, I'ma hide by a broad
  7. Shootin' stars in my pocket; bitch, sit on my rocket
  8. I'm wired out the socket, but still shockin'
  9. Everybody wanna tell me what I need
  10. You can play a role in my life but not the lead
  11. If there's food for thought then I'm guilty of greed
  12. Mama said, "Take what you want" – I took heed, yeah

One of the stand-out tracks off I Am Not a Human Being II. Wayne speaks on the harsh realities of the proverbial American Dream and the relentless elusiveness of a triumph over it.

He spells America with a ‘K’ because he’s a blood and bloods don’t say the letter ‘c’

Black Sabbath - War Pigs (Lyrics)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/31044726

[Bridge]

  1. Politicians hide themselves away
  2. They only started the war
  3. Why should they go out to fight?
  4. They leave that all to the poor, yeah
  5. Time will tell on their power minds
  6. Making war just for fun
  7. Treating people just like pawns in chess
  8. Wait till their judgment day comes, yeah

As the opening track of the influential Black Sabbath album, Paranoid, “War Pigs” was originally titled “Walpurgis.” Walpurgis Night takes place on the 30th April to mark the eve of the feast day of Saint Walpurga, an 8th-century English missionary to the Frankish Empire. It is also believed to be the night of a witches’ meeting or sabbath. The instrumental outro is entitled, “Luke’s Wall.” It is one of the most-covered songs in history and is frequently ranked among the greatest rock songs of all time.

The song talks about war and—like the hippies—Black Sabbath was totally against it, speci

Slick Rick - Children's Story (Official Music Video)

“Children’s Story,” the second single released from The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, is the peak of Slick Rick’s storytelling in the form of a classic cautionary tale for children. He tells the story of two kids who decide to start robbing people. One of the kids becomes addicted and can’t stop. One day he robs an undercover detective. After a long chase with the cops, he is shot dead.

In Check the Technique, Slick Rick talked about “Children’s Story”:

We tried to make it a visual picture, especially with the ending. The ‘Knock 'em out the box, Rick,’ was like the climax, the big party part. We did the overlapping vocals because we wanted to keep the effect that was on [Doug E. Fresh’s] "The Show." I saw that scene in real life, so I just put it on paper and added a little fiction to make it more interesting. I didn’t see the people get shot, but I saw the people go to jail and ruin their whole life.

“Children’s Story” peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. The song’s

Eminem - Smack You (Suge Knight & Ja Rule Diss)

“Smack You” is a no holds barred diss track aimed at Suge Knight with the occasional shot at Ja Rule. The clapback starts with a short but powerful sample of 2Pac’s “Bomb First (My Second Reply),” accusing Suge for the murder of Pac and Biggie.

What follows are two cutthroat verses which are backed by sporadic adlibs courtesy of Em’s daughter, Hailie Jade. This provocative track was kept in the vault for nearly 20 years until it got leaked in January of 2025.^[[1] https://genius.com/Eminem-smack-you-lyrics]

Eminem’s Recent Song Leaks Were Condemned By The Rapper’s Spokesman

[Aaron Williams, Hip-Hop Editor | 01/15/25]

Earlier this week, social media lit up with buzz about the leak of a 20-year-old Eminem diss track against Ja Rule and Suge Knight, “Smack You,” along with a handful of other demos. However, in a response from Eminem’s longtime spokesperson, Interscope Publicity Chief Dennis Dennehy, it sounds like Em is more frustrated by the leaks than enthused by their recept

Downturn in fortunes: Long Nanny terns face mounting pressures from climate change and disease

Reports from the National Trust, who look after this vitally important breeding site for the terns at Long Nanny near Beadnell in Northumberland indicate that the number of occupied Arctic tern nests has dropped by 313 compared to last year (724 occupied nests in 2025 compared to 1,037 in 2024).

This news comes just one month after a high spring tide washed away occupied Arctic tern and little tern nests at Long Nanny, despite rangers' best efforts to protect them from extreme weather conditions. It also comes just 10 months after the Arctic tern species was added to the UK Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC) Red List, reflecting the significant population declines driven by multiple factors including climate change, overfishing and avian influenza[1].

James Porteus, Lead Ranger for the National Trust at Long Nanny said: “After several difficult years due to storms washing out nests and then bird flu, we have been saddened by the drop in Arctic tern numbers returning to Long Nanny t

The concept of right. I hope it makes sense.

The following is something I wrote earlier. I don't know the validity of it, and I'm not sure I correctly expressed the concepts of "power" and "rights" after translating them from italian.

--

Lately I had in mind the concept of right. Specifically, the idea Stirner had about it.

When I read The Ego and It's Own, that passage stuck with me.

[omitted unrelated stuff, because I started thinking about other things before writing what follows]

I'm thinking how the whole action of Giorgio Rosa [1] was anarchist in it's essence. He created that island just because he could do it: he had the power to do it.

I'm thinking about how many times I did something just because I could, and because I felt like it. I'm sure that more than once me and that-one-friend answered the question "why?" with "because we can". And I'm thinking how "because I can" is one of the fundamental hackers' "ideology" - mostly.

I'm thinking about how "because I can" is one of the most genuine motive that people hav

A first step towards such a theory is to create a computational model that can predict human behaviour in a wide range of settings. Here we introduce Centaur, a computational model that can predict and simulate human behaviour in any experiment expressible in natural language. We derived Centaur by fine-tuning a state-of-the-art language model on a large-scale dataset called P

Outrage Over Chants Instead of Genocide: Bobby Vylan Furore Is Sick

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/32332431

Generated Summary below:

Main Topic: The video discusses the outrage and media firestorm surrounding Bobby Vylan's chants of "Death to the IDF" and "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" at Glastonbury, contrasting it with the comparatively muted response to the alleged atrocities committed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) against Palestinians.

Key Points:

  • Double Standard: The speaker argues that there's a stark contrast between the condemnation of Vylan's chants and the lack of outrage over alleged IDF actions, including the killing of unarmed civilians seeking humanitarian aid.
  • IDF Actions: The video cites a report from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz detailing alleged orders for IDF soldiers to deliberately shoot at unarmed Palestinians near food distribution sites. It also lists a series of alleged war crimes committed by the IDF.
  • "From the River to the Sea":
