Premier Smith reveals plans to take some Alberta hospitals away from AHS and give them to Covenant Health (faith based)

This just seems like a step towards privatizing healthcare in Alberta. Also with the pivot to giving a religious based organization the power over people’s healthcare that just means certain types of care will not be provided, from abortions to transgender health. I knew things were going to get worse in this province (don’t get me started on the power bills) but seeing it still strikes fear. Some people are saying this goes against the charter and therefore the feds can get involved, but will they? I don’t think so.

  • I mean, other than religious mania; is there a specific reason to move public funds from a public institution to a religious institution? The bourgeoisie have done a pretty good job of turning hospitals and schools into profit-centers and vocational training academies. Administration can grift off public funding real easily.

Is there a net gain for them to push religious school other than religious reasons? Less funding oversight? Cheaper? I'm curious.

    • Smith claims that Covenant Health manages health care facilities better than AHS, she says that they can keep up 24hr care while AHS is constantly shutting down facilities. She, of course, fails to mention how poor the conditions are in Covenant Health run labs and hospitals. Maybe AHS is struggling because our province fails to give them the proper funding they’re owed.

Edit: here is a piece about the situation and why Smith is pushing for breaking up AHS. She basically thinks AHS has a “monopoly” on healthcare and wants to breaks that up. Competition and all that…
