So what is the goal of the war? The officially stated reasons make no sense and even the assumption that the country will descend into chaos seems more like a prayer then a plan. It also just seems like a bad plan that could potentially be awful for everyone.

I guess the US will make money as a major oil supplier and there is probably just corruption involving markets/the Gulf States/Israel + some attempt at reasserting violent hegemony before the midterm but this seems brainless even for Trump.

They might get some lib/anti Iran votes from this because some of the responses I have seen over there are a bit nuts/really anti Iranian but it's not going to be big.
