The Syrian military entered Hasakah’s governorate’s Shaddadi Base after the US army handed the facility over to Damascus, Syria’s Defense Ministry announced in a statement on 15 February.

“The Syrian Arab Army has assumed control of the Shaddadi military base in Hasakah province, northeastern Syria. The base was handed over to the Syrian Army after completing arrangements with US authorities,” the Defense Ministry’s media department told state media outlet SANA.

The US military established the Shaddadi base in 2016, around a year after the US occupation of Syria officially began.

US troops were still present at the site in January 2026, when a large-scale government assault saw the nearby Shaddadi Prison come under heavy attacks. Hundreds of ISIS members escaped from that prison during the chaos.
