    fediverse modlog question

    Great instance

I joined this instance recently and I really like the cool custom additions and tweaks! It’s nice to have an admin that knows what they’re doing and takes the time to develop solutions.

I’m glad to be here :)

Downtime - Apologies and what went wrong

    Hi All,

As some of you may have realised, the planned upgrade sort of crashed everything, and we had our longest period of downtime since the site began.

This is partly because I had to go to sleep (thanks to a newborn and a job).

The good news is that the backup process worked! We've restored to seconds before the upgrade took the site offline.

The bad news is that federation is likely to be.. wonky.. for a little while. The site may also go up and down while I undo some of the fixes I tried.

Ultimately the issue came down to the upgrade failing (I am not sure why - will be digging into this now the priority is no longer getting the site up) and then the containers not talking to eachother, so the UI wouldn't talk to lemmy, and lemmy wouldn't talk to the database.

I rebuilt the containers, restored the backup, restarted everything, and it's all come back up (admittedly not perfect right now).

Importantly, I want to issue an apology. This isn't what I want for Lemmy.zip, and i

    Lemmy.zip Server Update April 2025

    Hello all,

It's that time of the month again!

Unfortunately we didn't have chance to do an April Fools this year (besides, reality is weird enough in itself) - as mentioned at the end of the last update I was expecting a child, who has safely arrived and is amazing, whilst also ruining my sleep schedule and eating all of my free time!

I am sneaking a few minutes in though, to write this as they sleep!

    Communities

We've had loads of new communities this month, so I'll highlight certain ones to keep the list a bit more manageable:

    Filtering by Word Question

Apologies if this isn't the place to post this, but is the capability to block/filter posts by a keyword something that is A) doable but unique to certain instances, B) doable but unique to certain interfaces (I use a.lemmy.zip fwiw), or C) just straight up not doable at this time anywhere on lemmy?

    Hello Lemmy.zip!

Hello! I've been part of the Lemmy community for almost 2 years, but now it was time to join Lemmy.zip and create some communities. This instance seemed the perfect one to host some gaming communites I missed on Lemmy, so I created them. (One of the most beautiful part of fediverse/lemmy is the option to keep things organized, so a Lemmy about gaming? Here I am!)

!PlanetCoaster@lemmy.zip Is a community about Planet Coaster games, to share your parks, rolercoasters and discuss game updates.

!foundationgame@lemmy.zip Foundation is an Indie game by Polymorph Games where you build your medieval village. I missed this community on Lemmy and users can share their villages, questions and game updates. The game just came out of Early Acess last month.

I also started modding a community for Cities Skylines. This community was abandoned and I asked to mod it. I know this is not on Lemmy.zip, but it was the community wi

    Saying hi, some observations

Hi! I joined Lemmy.zip in search of an European / non-US alternative to r/. I heard about Lemmy via one of the several Buy European / European alternatives community posts. While signing up for the .world instance it urges you to have a look at less generic instances that might match your interest. That's when I found you. I game from time to time, work in IT (architecture) and have a broad personal interest in understanding the 'How' behind technology. Lemmy.zip sounds like a good match!

While getting settled and trying all the different web apps I have observed:

    • All the different front-ends (a. /m. /t.) require a new login, this feels a bit strange while you are on the same domain.
    • The mobile m.lemmy.zip (photon), while looking pretty has a few issues:
      • The setting to blur NSFW thumbnails does not work, they show unblurred. Other apps (e.g. Tesseract) do blur.
      • Scrolling through the feed on Firefox (Android) is very jerky with a lot of 'hickups' going back up for a frac

    Lemmy.zip Server Update March 2025

    Hello all,

That time of the (shorter) month again!

    Communities

We've got a couple of new communities for you:

    • Autism Memes
    • Mod Tools (I'm trying to consolidate all the available mod-specific tools in one place. This is a local-only community for Lemmy.zip too)

    Server Update

A few things happened this month.

Firstly, the smaller things - We updated to Lemmy 0.19.9 which was quick and easy. We also migrated the image database from Sled to Postgres which was relatively easy once it got going, but was not quick. But that piece of work is done now, and should result in tiny performance improvements now we have so many images.

We also implemented the Geoblock of UK IP addresses (more info here). This took a couple of goes to get it how I wanted it to work, but the UI is now blocked to UK IP addresses, and federa

Important News - Geoblocking of the UK

    Hi All,

Some sad news, but it has become apparent in order to safeguard the longevity of this site, there are no options left other than to cease allowing people from the United Kingdom to access Lemmy.zip.

Just to reassure everyone else right at the start - this ONLY affects users from the UK accessing Lemmy.zip. There is no effect on everyone else, and nothing in your Lemmy experience will change.

Due to the implementation of the Online Safety Act, we will be restricting access to Lemmy.zip to UK users starting 15th February 2025 —one week from today.

    Why is this happening?

Lemmy.zip is hosted in Finland, and we have always strived to operate with respect for privacy and in line with all applicable laws. However, the UK’s Online Safety Act presents significant legal and operational challenges for small, independent fediverse sites, just like this one. The Act’s vague and overbearing requirements, combined with the potential for disproportionate and extreme fines, for

    Lemmy.zip Server Update February 2025

Hello & welcome to Lemmy.zip February Server Update!

Bit of a quieter one on the developments side, but we've had a lot of user growth over the past month. First though:

    Communities

We've got a couple of new communities. If you enjoy them, give them a subscribe and join in with the conversation!

    Server Update

In terms of our usual development, not too much has happened (It's been a busy month IRL for me!). We put out a call for admin recruitment and got some good applications. I will review these at some point, and will consider the activity of the site vs another admin.

We've also seen a large jump in user numbers, which for a while slightly overwhelmed some of the safeguards we had in place. Usually uptime is pretty good but it dropped below 97% in a 24 hour period due to frequent time-outs. Some configs were tweaked and it was mostly resolved, but it does show the appetite for an

    Lemmy.zip Server Update - January 2025

Welcome to the January 2025 Lemmy.zip Server Update!

As the first one of 2025, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and I hope you all had a lovely time with your loved ones.

There are some quite important changes to include in this update, so please do take a couple of minutes to read it.

    Server Update

Lemmy.zip was updated to Lemmy 0.19.8 - Changelog - which was a quick and easy update.

At the same time I switched image proxying on which means, in the words of the lemmy devs:

This prevents deanonymization attacks where an attacker uploads an image to his own server, embeds it in a Lemmy post and watches the IPs which load the image.

You can see exactly what this prevents by clicking here.

This has caused some images to be broken from loading from external websites, whereby you will get the broken image fallback instead of the actual image. Lemmy allows me to bypass pr

    Image proxy breaking gifs

The image proxy appears to be borking some (all?) gif links. For example:

     undefined

    ![](https://c.tenor.com/Nfn2jAEKNpwAAAAd/tenor.gif)

The image proxy returns the response:

     json

    {"code":"validate-width","msg":"Too wide"}

Is it actually too wide or is this a bug? If it's legit, shouldn't the proxy make the necessary adjustments? Any way around this? Seems like tenor at least has large size low rez images. Not sure if this is a recent change on either end, but haven't had this issue before.
